      It is tough to justify going east when living in the West. Every time I venture outside of Utah, people always ask, "Why?" That being said, I keep trying to experience more spots in New England only to have poor snow conditions cause trip cancellations. If I only have 3 days out East, what areas would you recommend?

    • @matthewbennettutah
      @matthewbennettutah 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the recommendations as they are all impressive runs. Growing up, I always thought Palisades had some amazingly steep stuff but when I returned recently, I found it to be a lot more tame than I remembered and so I didn't add it to the list (look for an update to my Sidecountry video where I give kudos to the area). As for Crested Butte, I love that place and had a great time when I skied there. I've gotten a lot of comments about Rambo not making the list. When I was there, it was unskiable due to lack of snow. I've since done a bit of research and it never has enough snow so that you are always dodging rocks. I have to question if you can really call it a run. It sounds more like a cliff sprinkled with snow every once and awhile. That being said, it is a very steep run and kudos to anyone that skis it. I left Crested Butte off the list due to the other resorts having quite a few steep runs to choose from.

    • @zhezhang3055
      @zhezhang3055 2 місяці тому

      I did Rambo this season, there is some exposed stone close to the entrance and probably you can get into the run from the trees on the right side. When you ski down 1/4 of the run, there are no more stones. But I am thinking about going back to it sometime later because there are lots of challenging routes in the Phoneix bowl and third bowl. Body bag and deadend chute will make you miss Rambo.@@matthewbennettutah

      Thanks for the recommendations out East. I had hoped to get out there this winter but kept hearing about how it would snow, get warm, and all the snow would melt. I think if I hit it right, I would have had some good snow but that is tough to plan. I have to go to New York every so often for work and plan to bring my skis when I know the snow is good. Perhaps I should do an East-Coast list as I know there are some great places there.

    That's an excellent top-five list, although I haven't skied Kicking Horse yet. Alta-Bird is my favorite ski area in the US. In my mind, the only other places that might make this list are Telluride, which, if memory serves, is similar to Taos in the steeps department, and Mad River Glen, which is quite different from all the areas on your list-probably an honorable mention. I grew up skiing, racing, and patrolling back east in the '60s and '70s. My favorites are Mad River, Sugarbush, and Stowe in Vermont; Wildcat and Loon in New Hampshire; and Sunday River in Maine. Tuckerman Ravine can be fun in Spring when the weather is good, but it's a five-hour hike.

    • @matthewbennettutah

      Thanks for the recommendations. I thought about making Mad River Glen an honorable mention but listed Alyeska as I have been there in the summer and have seen the steeps first hand. I thought about doing a trip out east this winter but kept hearing that it would snow and then rain so the conditions never warranted the flight. I was concerned Kicking Horse wouldn't live up to the hype which is why I made the trip this year. I'm glad I went out of my way as it really made for a great place to ski. It was the highlight of my Canadian trip this year. I highly recommend it.

    I just skied Keystone's closing day this year and it was an 8" powder day. My first pow day ever. I think I've officially caught the powder bug! But I think I want a little more experience with it before heading to Alta! It's *so* high on my bucket list, though...

    • @matthewbennettutah
      @matthewbennettutah 3 місяці тому

      The trick to powder skiing is to ski a slightly straighter line. Most skiers try to ski the same arc they would on a groomer only to feel constrained by the snow. The deeper the snow, the straighter the line you can ski. Once you practice that for 2 or 3 turns, you should be golden.

  • @josiahsimmons9866
    @josiahsimmons9866 3 місяці тому

    For the fun factor, I definitely say Keystone! Their terrain has a lot of really good variety, without too big of crowds since most people wander over to Breckenridge. The groomers on the front side are really speedy with plenty of interesting turns and ridges, the North Peak has some good mogul runs, while the Outback is famous for its fantastic trees. Bonus: you never really end up with boring traversing or endless catwalks, most runs end up right at the bottom of a lift!

    Back in the day, circa 1976 for me, Exhibition at Sun Valley had nicely shaped long ski bumps very visible from the since removed Exhibition single chair. A few years later, circa 1981, the since-removed Exhibition triple chair still had a nice view of Exhibition. Lots of excellent skiers to watch while ascending.

      You can do an Internet search for "The Cabins at Bear River Lodge" and they also do ATV rentals in the summer or snowmobile rentals in the winter. If you call their reservation number (801-396-4509) you can ask about shuttle reservations. Be prepared to pay over the phone as they won't hold a reservation without it. Hopefully this helps.

In about 10 years, once the kids move out I do plan to make more ME time versus supporting the families needs haha!!! Whiteface MT New York, the only lift served slide skiing in the East. Slides only open when conditions are permitting, the highest vertical drop in the east, and the host of two winter Olympics. Stowe VT has many sidecountry trails, and Jay Peak VT has Big Jay for sidecountry, and they get the most snow.

    I think the secret to looking good in front of witnesses is to not care what anybody thinks...but we do. So the real secret is to have fun and know it's not shameful to fall because we all do. I went up the lift with a guy who I had seen skiing the mogul side of Ripcord at Sugarbush and I told him that he looked like he knew what he was doing. It seemed to make his day. And he was the kind of skier I like to try to follow. He wasn't intimidated by skiing under the lift, he wasn't afraid of taking a difficult line. I enjoy your videos and hope you are inspired to make more! BTW I love Highboy and don't think anyone can see well enough to know how well it is being skied either.

    • @matthewbennettutah
      @matthewbennettutah 11 місяців тому

      Thank you for your kind words. I have a bunch of videos in process and hope to get them out in the near future. The only problem is I have a busy travel schedule for work over the next few weeks so they will have to wait. As for looking good, I agree with you that you just have to not care what people think and have a good time. I once skied with a guy at Crested Butte who didn't care what people thought, he just skied hard, hit a lot of jumps, and looked like he was genuinely having fun. In the end, that's what really matters.
