Trying Korean Snacks Part two
Today's video is part two of my Korean snacks series. In this video, I wanted to take more of a risk trying different Korean snacks. While there are some snacks I really enjoy, today’s selection features a few that aren’t exactly to my taste. I hope everyone enjoys the video!
In my next video, I’ll give you a more in-depth look at my city, Gangseo-Gu.

My people, go where you are loved. Stop wasting your money, time and talents on countries that don't appreciate you or want you there. There is a solution.
@@shiriyakanaka if only I could add the snapping meme
@@derringtravel3278 Crazy to me the amount of black UA-camrs talking about how difficult it is for them to live, work and date in South Korea, Japan and whatever else. Why do you need to be loved and accepted by people who don't anyway? This need for approval is what we can control, not how they feel.
@@shiriyakanaka honestly, I don’t understand it either. I live in this country for UA-cam and one other person. At this point, I’m not looking for fried s in South Korea. I have zero interest. I’m super close to monetizing. If I could find a job where I could work online, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

This is nice 😍
I've never been outside of Texas, and as a Black American woman, I've never felt fully accepted here. I don't expect it to be different abroad. When visiting other countries, we should respect the locals and their way of life, but we shouldn't forget who we are. I've been learning about Korean culture and the language for about three years now. If people feel they can't integrate well within a culture or country, maybe they should consider leaving. I know it can be tough for Black Americans to connect with other Black foreigners, but I think it's because we both can be a bit too proud. This video has given me better insight into foreign relations in South Korea, and I appreciate that.
You know, you are the trouble maker. I hear your definition of 'shucking and jivin'", and think that isn't what I thought it meant. So I look it up: "Shuckin' and jivin' (or shucking and jiving) is slang for joking and acting evasively in the presence of an authoritative figure. It usually involves clever lies and impromptu storytelling, to one-up an opponent or avoid punishment." And that's what I thought - jive talk is about fooling people and excluding them, not acting happy to please a sl*ve owner. Maybe your definition was right about 5 or 10 generations ago, but it has changed. Still, you take the self-pitying definition, and THEN you poison the minds of table full of people she has to work with, all the while thinking you are the good guy.
I mean, if you are going to spread rumours about her to all her co-workers over just that - when it isn't even at all clear what was meant - then that's you creating a problem.
Listening to you sharing the interactions you had with your superior, I can't help but find you very combative. You seem to think that it happened to you because you're black but all I can see is that the only reason why you kept you job for that long is because you're a foreigner and your boss was being as understanding as they can. Challening your boss for raising their voice is unthinkable in korean culture. While listening to you, I was like 🤯🤯🤯 people actually behave that way in the workplace??? Literally unthinkable in South Korea
@@etjaajtaejet-cc8qy the fact that YOU think raising your voice at a grown man who’s done nothing wrong, no parent complaints, no student complaints is okay, shows there is something wrong with you and the person who did it. As I said in the video, l wasn’t talked to about my performance or a complaint. I was talked to because the boss didn’t like my face. If you or the boss doesn’t like my face, tell me in a professional way. Raising your voice does what? Nothing. I don’t care about Korean culture (which has already been characterized as toxic). Be respectful. You can accept toxic behavior if you want. That’s not me. You can label what you want, but you don’t know me. The one you and every other Korean will do is be respectful. As the old saying goes, “you get more bees with honey instead of vinegar”
@derringtravel3278 You don't like the culture and are not willing to respect it. I think this country is just not for you. You'll be happier somewhere else I think
@derringtravel3278 and I don't think it's fine what they did just I would've responded differently and not in such a direct and confrontational manner
@@etjaajtaejet-cc8qy I bet you wouldn’t have said confrontational if I was white? But it’s okay. Thats how it goes when it comes to black people. Whenever we ask for respect in any form we are “aggressive, disrespectful, or confrontational.” Also, I’m willing to respect someone’s culture, but raising your voice is not acceptable behavior.
@@etjaajtaejet-cc8qy that’s you. I’m me. This is what makes us individuals. You are willing to accept that. Like other teachers who suffer from that behavior and become depressed to the point they run home and never come back. I guess I should be like one of them?
That night show was amazing, but the other beach was pretty sad to see the trash in the water. How much was it to rent the bikes ? Thank you for giving your honest reviews.
@@almettat5692 I loved the drone show. I’ve been wanting to see the drone show for a while. When it comes to the bikes, there isn’t a set price, but I think they are cheap. I’ve rode a bike for an hour and paid less than 10,000 krw or $7.50 for an hour. Depending on how far I’m going, I will always choose a bike or scooter over a taxi.
I really agree with the idea of the video and the talking points but idk if Id say eating Korean food makes you a Koreaboo or liking Korean music.... 😅 Koreaboos are extreme and try to become Korean and are obsessed and fetishize Koreans and Korean culture. To not enjoy aspects of the place you live make it difficult to live here long term. But then again I guess I'm an outsider of the foreign community here since I don't talk to ppl. Being a foreigner isnt a bad thing, you are not a citizen of the country. Yea I also stopped trying too hard to be friends with other foreigners for various reasons, not always negative. Sometimes its just a matter of different reasons for being here and different lifestyle.
Many would say visiting Korea is better than immigranting in the workforce. It is true alot of hagwons are poorly managed. In China it is also the same but in China a teacher might get threatened to leave or threatened if they want to leave. I think the best advice for teachers who take jobs in SK should not run away from your agent after getting the job and keep a backup plan and find another job maybe you want to do within the next month incase things go viral during the beginning of your contract.
I have been here 9 years and everything you say is so spot on. There is a lot of judgement in the foreigner community and cliques. The people who know korean well vs dont, the ones who got non teaching jobs vs those who teach, people with many korean friends vs none. Many of my foreign friends who have come and gone have said the foreigners in Korea are weird. As time goes on, I have found it easier to discern good people who are authentic and sincere from the rest. I thinks its important to say theres good people out there but yes theres definitely a lot of ???. My theory is that we all on some level are reminded daily we are foreign, and I think many of these people are reacting to those feelings by trying hard to fit in more, and somehow feel on a level above the foreigners who supposedly dont do this well or who outwardly express their frustrations. I have found many people who “make it” so to speak into a dream job and lifestyle in Korea, who claim they love their life arent actually happy either. I think a lot of foreigners generally hide their frustrations in an effort to fit in more.
@@SaraFlara Well said!!
I’ve contemplated trying to create a community or organizing meetups, but I honestly don’t have the time. The ones I’ve been to, seem to always be infiltrated with toxic behavior. Foreigners in Mexico were much nicer.
Just move out.... lmao
I'm not saying it wasn't because you're black, because I've seen how racist Korean people can be, but I would like to share my experience in Korea. I'm a large (6'1", 350 lbs) white guy, and I got a lot of the same comments about appearing angry, kids being scared of me, and Korean staff members being scared of me. Korean culture is one that encourages submission to authority and punishes too much independence and confidence, so a large foreign man speaking confidently and authoritatively can be intimidating to them regardless of skin color.
I'll be back in Korea soon for a few months and OMG everything you said was exactly how I felt in May when I was in Korea! Idk about everybody else but I want Black friends and community in Korea when I'm there lol (it made me sad when I would try to be in community with Black people I met and they wouldn't even return the nod 😭)
@@theroamingbookworm it’s sad. Now, I keep my circle small in Korea because for some reason foreigners just act funny. There is a guy who made a whole tik tok about foriengers
at least as an african american you don't have to worry about police killing you or being arrested for fitting the profile of being black
That is called ignorance, homogenous societies are primitive to a degree. You do not grow that way

@@sebastianhernandez491 oh this apartment is almost 3 years old. I’ve moved 3 more times after this. One of my most recent videos shows my new apartment. I wish I could saw what school I was at. Due to Korean defamation laws I can’t.
Actually, this kind of thing is one of the biggest pitfalls of working at a hagwon. Misperceptions, biases and miscommunication, seem to be at the heart of the business model! I had a good experience, followed by bad ones. I worked for over 2 years at a large kinder-elementary in Dongtan. I got to know the kids. They liked me. I got to know the curriculum very well. The director wanted me to stay for a third year, but the owner said no. The next job was at a hagwon that taught essay-writing to elementary and middle school kids. However, their kids were mostly 8-10 in Korean years. I am known for being superb at correcting essays. I got a warning letter for crossing out something in an essay. That job lasted 3 weeks. The next job was very different. The boss was nice. But I was to teach tiny kids in diapers. That job lasted 4 months because a new boss appeared, and wanted CHANGE!
Great video thanks for this information.

😅so true. luckily, I am an "old" teacher at 58, 15 years in 🇰🇷 Korea, and counting. My KTs listen to my "direct statements," and I get what I want. 😅 The less time my KTs spend in the classroom, the better the class flows.

I have a friend from the USA who used to be a teacher in South Korea. She was a very scary person. Despite being from the USA, she hated Americans and assumed that Americans were sleeping around with Korean men. She talked badly about foreigners in South Korea and did not allow me to talk with any American friends who were teaching in South Korea at that time. I still don’t understand why.
With some people there’s nothing to understand.
I wouldn’t assume all Americans are sleeping around with Koreans. That’s a HUGE assumption. However, I think there is a problem when it comes to foreigners socializing and creating bonds between each other. I recognize everyone has their own reasons for coming, but some of the behaviors I’ve observed are appalling.

It's a shame the foreign community can be so toxic and I often wonder why it's that way. Most of the foreigners I've met here are insecure and competitive to the point that hearing things like "my co-teachers told me they hated the teacher who was here before me" is a regular occurrence. Like, they'll say it with a hint of relief in their voice like they're happy their new Korean colleagues are bad-mouthing the previous teacher because somehow it takes the pressure off them? I've sat through a lot of not-very-nice conversations where teachers will just sit there and bitch about other teachers, often people they've never even met which is wild to me. Another thing I've seen a lot is teachers being needlessly competitive. I work in public school so there's usually only one foreign teacher per school and yet foreign teachers will meet up outside of work and bang on endlessly about what they did in their classes but the vibe always seems very negative and like people are trying to outdo each other. It's exhausting. All I can think is that maybe it stems from the slight myth (depends on your experiences and perspective I guess) that Korean teachers don't respect us and think we're under qualified. I do understand it to some extent, especially with jobs and visas being tied together so that people feel pressure to reinvent the wheel and be the world's best teacher because they think that if they're not they'll get fired. Personally, I have to try really hard to not get sucked into conversations about previous teachers and the work competitiveness because in the past when I've spent time with people and it's been hours and hours of that talk I'd always come away from the situation feeling drained and feeling bad about myself. It seems like the foreign community don't have much compassion for each other sometimes. Also, I had a really weird experience about two years ago, where I was going to a new school and the previous teacher was at the bus stop but said she couldn't remember which bus it was I had to get there. No worries, she got on her bus and I went and spoke to a bus driver...turns out he was the bus driver for the bus she was on and I could also get that bus, so he gets on and then I start to get on the bus. The teacher is sat right at the front and as I'm walking up the steps she grabs my arm to stop me, turns to the driver and starts speaking to him in Korean. The only conversation I've ever had with this woman was five minutes ago when she told me she couldn't remember the bus number, so I was caught off guard by her over familiarity. It was so unbelievably rude I just stood there dumbfounded and the driver looked confused because I'd already spoken to him. Basically, for some reason she had assumed that I didn't speak any Korean and that I needed her help, so without any prompting from me whatsoever she jumped in. In my opinion, when it comes to speaking Korean, just leave other foreigners alone. If someone asks for your help then help them if you can but don't take it upon yourself to get into other people's business. All that woman did was complicate and confuse the situation through her arrogant assumption that I don't speak the language. Sometimes foreigners can be quite aggressive about the language issue and I get that people have strong opinions about it but actually inserting yourself into a situation seems a bit much, especially when you haven't been asked to help. The condescension was breath-taking and, again, I can only surmise that it comes from either insecurity or competitiveness. It's like it's not enough for people to be personally proud of their own achievements, they need the rest of the community to know what they did in class or how much Korean they speak etc etc. I have met people here who are really nice and that I've kept in touch with for years after they've left though and generally those people seemed content with who they are as people, more positive, happy to encourage others etc so they were easier to get along with. Maybe people are more insecure nowadays? Who knows, but it's great when you find someone who's worth hanging onto. ^^
