Let's Play Sierra Games - Final Soul - Commentary

It was fun to replay my own game - then go through and comment on how I would have done so much differently... and still would, if I had the source code to the game still. I had mentioned in one of my recent videos - probably during Mystery House - that if I reached 1,000 subscribers - I'd play my own text adventure game I made back in.... 1995... called "Final Soul." I mentioned in one of my recent videos - probably during Mystery House - that if I reached 1,000 subscribers - I'd play my own text adventure game I made back in.... 1995... called "Final Soul." There's a few bugs I (rediscovered) in playing it - for example an area where you pick up the bucket... but the room tells you the bucket is still there... but still shows in your inventory... and the b...

Here's a 9 and a half minute video of me just trying to say ... thank you. The unscripted video, however, I think captures my sincerity (and my quirky personality and ability to clearly ramble). I am so thankful for all of you who have checked out my videos, commented, liked, subscribed, shared - even if ... you just watch my videos to go to sleep at night! Just keep watching!

I honestly did not think I would talk as much as I did during this video... I ended up talking to almost the entire video, with very few gaps... which is wild. I just recently learned that ScummVM can play the .DSK images from the Roberta Williams Anthology, thus allowing me to play these older ones (Hi-Res Adventures) without the Apple Emulator (because the Apple Emulator that comes with the Roberta Williams Anthology, logically, after all these years, doesn't work on Windows 11). A new video, what a gift! Great to see you man. I used to love cars, love working on my cars but starting a few years ago that changed as my priorities in life have changed and reliable parts for 20+ year old cars started to get pricey and hard to find. Stress overload is an awful feeling, take your time, we'll still be here!

      Thank you! Yeah - my XTERRA was my baby. How it came out - I used to work for a company called Dragon Optical. And they had an XTERRA covered in Dragon Optical stickers and needed someone to drive it around to help advertise. I gladly volunteered and immediately fell in love with the XTERRA and had gone and got my own. lol I knew the time would come soon for that poor XTERRA of mine, because the last couple of years after my wife's health took a nose dive, I wasn't taking as good care of that beast of a car as I should have been, especially with how old the car was. My wife is convinced that one day I am going to fix it since it's still parked in front of my house.... :-) But that's not gonna happen unless a miracle of mass money falls on my lap! :)

    I could almost write the same comment as "cookie of doom". Game was clunky and full of plotholes (especially at the end, which screams "we ran out of time/budget"), but somehow, it had a lot of charm because of its uniqueness, and I liked it a lot as a kid. Especially the space combat levels which weren't actually that far from an X-wing or wing commander in terms of quality, even if there wasn't that many sadly. And honestly, I absolutely adore the concept of designing a sci-fi universe based on the aesthetics of an ancient culture. The only 2 games that kinda did that too ,as far as I know, are "Asura's Wrath" and an indie game called "Mayan Death Robots". But besides that, I think we just had nothing exploring this very interesting idea. Inca, Aztecs and Mayans are such an untapped well of inspiration. And I wish we would see more of those civilizations and "their art styles" in games and media in general.

      I think it's very cool to hear how some folks REALLY loved these games. As I told Cookie of Doom - I think I've only ever PLAYED the first one - and about 200% sure I never beat it or got far in it. (I can't even recall if I still own the copy I played, or if that was my friend's father's copy!) I have a ton of Sierra games I bought as they were coming out all securely in bins! Most of them, I've thankfully been able to get on GoG, so I don't have to try and find ways to get the games off there (although the USB 3.5 was a nice savior, that allowed me to make copies of my own games, just because I have different version numbers than what GoG released, which sometimes had little different things!). But there's no USB 5.25" for me to grab my game files for the games I had on 5.25" drive! But definitely, with the amount of interest and passion that folks talk about the two Inca games I am hoping to eventually play them for my channel on here. :)

      @@LetsPlaySierraGames Inca 2 actually was localized to my native french, and the voice actors did arguably a better job than the original ones. ...Not that they were amazing, but they managed to make some scenes less cringe than they were in the original English. XD But as I said, it's the kind of game that had issues so blatant I was very much aware of them, even as a 9 year old. But on the other hand, even 30 years later, there has never been another game like this one. It's an absolutely unique experience. And if you end up resonating with this wild concept of "Incas in space" and/or its eerie atmosphere, the game can be very charming despite all of its flaws. And if you end up disliking it, it will at least be bad in a memorable way, being so different from any other game that ever existed.

    My favorite game of the series despite the several bugs it was released with. John Rhys Davies was a terrific narrator, most of the voice acting was good, the soundtrack was absolutely fantastic and drew quite a bit of inspiration from Tchaikovsky and Pink Floyd (to my ears, anyway). It also possessed the strongest storyline with some serious tearjerker moments.

      Absolutely agree. I had sincerely forgotten how good Quest for Glory IV was until I had recently replayed it again for my channel. My commentary version (ua-cam.com/video/KK385N9iB-o/v-deo.html&ab_channel=LetsPlaySierraGames - the game was so long I broke it into five parts because I didn't want to skip over anything to comment on) - was me pretty much confessing I forgot how freaking amazing the game is - and the one, very, very specific tear jerking moment, which is probably the same one you mean! Always glad to run into a fellow QFGIV fan! (Or really, ANY Sierra fan!) :)

      @LetsPlaySierraGames Місяць тому

      Yes! That is what was so great about the QfG series as a whole - that the way to solve some of the puzzles (could, if you wanted) be different depending on the class you played, which created some nice replayability! Have you got a specific favorite game from the series?

      @@LetsPlaySierraGames That's a really tough one. I love aspects of all 5 games, but QFG4 had the biggest impact on me in terms of the story. To this day, I can't watch the staff scene with Tanya and Toby without becoming a crying mess! Aside from the bugs, it was a masterpiece IMO.

      Thanks man! Yes, I loved developing this game! I was in the process of making a sequel game - but never got around to finishing it. But I enjoyed making this - back then, when I first created it - I had uploaded it to AOL and made it available through their site. I wish I still had the source code to the original - because I found a few bugs since then (naturally) that I'd love to fix.

    Kudos on the game! It looks pretty complex, with the map and the timed events, even though I know some people don't like those. I'd reckon taking notes would be a good idea, especially for the books you mention. I've heard of B.C. Quest for Tyres before and I thought that's the game you were talking about. :) But it's really something that you and your friend went through all the work to pitch your idea to Sierra and nice of them to reply. :)

    • @LetsPlaySierraGames
      @LetsPlaySierraGames 3 місяці тому

      Hah, yeah - back then we were both completely unaware of the B.C.'s Quest for Tires game by Sierra ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B.C.%27s_Quest_for_Tires ) ... Although not the traditional Sierra 'quest' type game... but it was a kicker that it was so similarly named to what we had come up with. lol It was fun to share the pictures we did - and the box art, manuals, and all that, that I had created back then. Seeing those print outs of the manual made me chuckle, because you can tell it's from a very old dot matrix printer. Final Soul was fun to create too. I truly do wish I still had the source code to fix the last few bugs. Not that I think anyone is going to play a text adventure game in these modern days, but just knowing those bugs are there are enough to make me want to squash'em. :) And thank you, as always, for hanging out, watching the video and commenting - it's so very appreciated!

    The mission given in this game relies on total moonlogic. What would have happened is you didn't randomly hook up with a spy? And said spy just happened to lose microfilm containing decryption keys? FOR THEIR OWN COUNTRY'S SECRETS?!? Why would they even have that?

    • @LetsPlaySierraGames
      @LetsPlaySierraGames 3 місяці тому

      Hooking up with the spy and the earring are the easiest parts of this game, lol.

    • @Darkshadow64540
      @Darkshadow64540 3 місяці тому

      @LetsPlaySierraGames but you get sent on a mission that would be completely impossible if you don't know those codes. Why would the pentagon send you on that mission without giving you the required codes to get your orders? A spy would only be carrying microfilm of decryption keys if they were trying to smuggle them back to their employer, why would a US spy be carrying US decryption codes?

    • @LetsPlaySierraGames
      @LetsPlaySierraGames 3 місяці тому

      @@Darkshadow64540 I'd need to go back and play it - but I _think_ you can still continue the game without the codes you get from her? I think the codes you get from her earring give additional information? I might be wrong on that... It's been a long time since I've played and messed up by not getting her earrings (it only took a few harsh lessons and repeated tries to beat the game and getting stuck on the sub sequence... so that I always automatically know to look for her earring - so I can't speak with 100% confidence that the game can continue without it). It would not surprise me, I will say, if you can't continue without it. The game admittedly tries to dead end you repeatedly (it even happened to me in this play through if I remember) - where I gave my ID, forgot to pick it up when I left, when I came right back the guy was like, "You need your ID." And in my head, I am like, "You literally just saw me 2 minutes ago. If you can't let me back to get my ID, can you call the guy who IS holding my ID to come back out here?" So yes, there is definitely some moon logic to the game and repeated attempts to dead end the player, for sure. Although the main character does wonder who she's a spy for when he discovers the earring's secret (ua-cam.com/video/jG-_JEyoEK8/v-deo.html). It could be they were never intended for him, and that she, as a spy was using them to decode things she was getting. ;)

      I think Mystery House was the first game to feature graphics, if I remember correctly. At least "complex" graphics (like this where it's stairs and such). So I get why the graphics were on the ... eh, rough side. But man, some of it could have definitely used more descriptions... (I am looking at you candle on the dining room table! lol)... and yes, the direction thing was... maddening. When I'd have to do "go door" to go to a doorway, rather than pressing a direction - then trying to figure out how to get out of that doorway/room. So I think if they just relied on directions (N, S, E, W) it would have made getting through that house way more easier. And the forest bit... that forest bit... still angry about that, lol. Because I enjoy playing without a walk through... but there's about an hour of me wandering in the forest that I cut out from the video because it was just me going in a million different directions to figure out which way led out of the forest! :D As for playing my own game - I may do that! I am only 5 subscribers away from 1,000 I just noticed! I think it'd also be fun to play - and then do commentary on my own game...! lol And thank you for always being there with comments and feedback! @@LetsPlaySierraGames I did see the candle, but I can understand how it could look like a spoon too. The doorway and forest sadly sound a bit like faults in the programming. I get annoyed with parsers recognising too few commands, but, as you mentioned that you had to give up on some of the verbs for your own game due to lack of space, maybe that was a problem in older games too. I like the relaxed atmosphere in your videos, so I drop by to watch from time to time. :)

      I agree - this entire game feels ... just there. There's no heart. No soul. None of Al Lowe's normal humor. We don't get that until until Leisure Suit Larry VI, and that feels like, because Al realized he phoned it in for LSLV - so he needed to make a LSL game that harkened back to what made LSL fun again.

But yes, the majority of what you will find on my channel is me going back through Sierra games - as play throughs, and then doing commentaries as a separate video! The games I don't use walk throughs (some of the Sierra games like Leisure Suit Larry, Space Quest, and most of the King's Quest series are ingrained in my memory from repeated plays in the past) - but there's other games I had only played once - and struggled to get through on my channel. The date stamp as to when I got these - they're all dated 2010. I thought it might have been from the Quest Studios website (the new URL is - www.midimusicadventures.com/queststudios/ - but the highest they go is QFGIV). So I can not recall where I got these. I do have the QFGV game on CD. So at some point I may have extracted them - but really do not remember. :(

    You’re the best dude. I may have a tiny crush on your cowboy avatar. You look like a bachelorette party entertainer. Haha. Real questions: 1) Apologies if I missed it but, did you say where the music came from? 2) nerd question to a fellow Californian, could a huge ship really travel thru the golden gate (even before bridge obviously) and all the way up to Sacramento? Truly, thank you for this magical nostalgic moment of calm and sanity. I need you in this time of ours.

    • @LetsPlaySierraGames
      @LetsPlaySierraGames 4 місяці тому

      Hah! Thank you for the compliment on the cowboy avatar. That was a long, long, long time ago when I used to have long hair. (I miss that long hair, still!) Now it's a long beard I have! It's like gravity took over. :) So for the music - because the music for Gold Rush is beeps and boops, what I did for the commentary is - I have a license with music called "Fantasy Complete II" from here (and it's currently on sale: www.monumentstudios.net/products/fantasy-complete-ii ) - so I just pick some of the more soothing songs from there to lay on the track in the background and just tried to find music to match the theme (so on the travel portions the music is a little more epic or exciting). As for the ships, indeed they did! The game does an amazing job being historically accurate (for the most part, except the very end, obviously). But this site talks about how many ships wrecked in the San Francisco Bay (www.nps.gov/places/000/how-many-ships-wrecked-during-the-gold-rush-on-the-way-into-san-francisco-bay.htm) and there's a video about how some people during the building find remains of a ship (ua-cam.com/video/u16s-f9sgW8/v-deo.html). So it's really cool stuff. As for the calm and sanity, I do try - and part of the reason I am replaying so many of these games - because they keep me calm during these times of chaos. So I am flattered to hear that others enjoy my channel and find some peace here.
