Jerry Cantrell talking about breaking his hand in 2001
This is from Jerry’s 2002 promotional interview for Degradation Trip.
He was asked about the worst physical pain he ever felt, then tells the story of how he broke his hand in the middle of a 2001 tour.
He broke his hand on May 3, 2001 after playing the Crown Royal Festival in the Field at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky (the home of the Kentucky Derby). Then he played one show after that, with his broken hand in cast and unable to play guitar, on May 5, 2001 in Atlanta. All shows after that were canceled, then Jerry returned to the stage on June 30, 2001 after recovering from the injury.

A 2001 performance of Atone before Jerry finished the song. I’m unsure of the exact date this performance took place. Jerry said in a handful of interviews that he had the song in the works for over 20 years until he finally released it on his third solo album “Brighten”. I sadly don’t have the exact lyrics. The chorus is the same as the modern version of the song, but I sadly don’t have the verses. Jerry never released the lyrics for this version because it was just played randomly at some live shows.
