What is the difference between #514 and #52 …analysis follows in description
In this encounter, two fundamentally different sailing strategies are evident.
Boat 52 employs a "low and free" approach, while Boat 514 adopts a "high to dominate" strategy.
Boat 514 competes for a strong starting position, whereas Boat 52 starts further down the line but benefits from clear air and minimal congestion. Although Boat 514 initially gains a dominant position, the velocity made good (VMG) for both boats is similar, which establishes the race's initial dynamics.
The wind conditions are highly variable, causing Boat 514 to experience multiple disruptions, while Boat 52, due to its more relaxed angle, navigates these fluctuations more effectively. At 18 seconds, Boat 514 is significantly affected by a gust, whereas Boat 52 maintains its course. At 34 seconds, Boat 52 overtakes Boat 514 as another gust impacts the latter. Following this, Boat 52 continues on a low trajectory, while Boats 514 and 21 maintain a higher course. Although the specifics of Boat 52's performance off-screen as it approached the top mark are unclear, it appears Boat 52 lost time, likely due to a shifting wind in a soft area of the course.
Observing the top mark rounding, Boat 514 loses power and takes time to recover, whereas Boat 52 retains strong power through the mark. This results in Boat 52 achieving greater speed towards the next corner and recovering much of the time lost. Boat 52 maintains a low course post-rounding, effectively utilizing a gust that disrupts the leading boats. By focusing on a smooth ride rather than allowing the dynamic conditions to dictate the performance, Boat 52 repositions itself among the leading boats at the bottom mark.
During the close tack at the bottom mark, both Boat 514 and Boat 52 gain a temporary advantage. Again, Boat 52's low and smooth approach contrasts with Boat 514's high and dynamic style. The impact of these differing strategies is evident up to 2:34, when both boats are affected by a gust and tack. Boat 52's conservative low approach allows it to power through the tack and handle the wind fluctuations more effectively, while Boat 514, by tacking to a higher line, loses the opportunity to adjust to the dynamic wind conditions and loses approximately 3 seconds.
At around 2:55, Boat 52 maintains its direction and optimizes sail power while continuing to sail low. In contrast, Boat 514 struggles with wind shifts, causing frequent changes in direction and varying speeds. Boat 52, having learned from the earlier rounding, approaches the "soft corner" more effectively. As both boats round the top mark, Boat 52 maintains full power and pulls ahead, establishing a significant gap
Boat 52's low sailing strategy allows it to better absorb wind dynamics, while Boat 514's erratic movements in response to shifts cause it to lag. Overall, a low and smooth strategy proves to be more effective in these conditions, providing more time to react and demanding intense concentration.
Enjoy !

Hi Mike. I've found that getting the 175mm measurement for the mast to the front eye requires my mast to be almost all the way back with no more adjustment and I can't figure out why.

Hi Mike, I find the mast rake measurement (and also twist) is highly dependent upon the backstay tension (amongst other things). When first setting up my rig, I set my rake (and subsequently the "initial" twist for the mainsail using the vang) with the backstay only just tensioned such that it is just straight (ie not slack, but not tight and no mast bend) so that I can set the rake and twist at a known repeatable (starting) condition. I then mark up the backstay with a series of graduations for each of which, I measure the associated ('backstay tension on') rake measurement, mainsail twist and mast bend for a given ("inital twist") vang setting. I now have a couple of questions...... 1. Do you follow the same or a similar process to start with or do you have another method for setting a datum backstay tension in order to be able to make your initial rake and twist measurements? & ....... 2. Is your rake measurement of 951mm taken with no backstay tension &/or mast bend or do you tension the backstay to give you 951mm rake for your stated mast gate position with no or a "just" tensioned forestay and take what ever mast bend fore or aft, that may (or may not) give you? Sorry for the rather OCD queries but I believe the mainsail (and jib twist) on these boats to be absolutely critical and am keen to clearly & unambiguously understand how people have initially set up their rigs & controls to give their stated twist measurements before moving on to tweak them to achieve best boat balance for a given set of wind conditions and sea states. Many Thanks

Richard Frost my initial setup is identical to your first paragraph.... however you should listen to my 5th video ..... you are absolutely correct in stating the main Leech and backstay tension is the most critical factor into determining the df65's performance.... if the wind is from 0 to 4 knots I have very little backstay tension ....as we move up the wind scale to 10 knots ( maximum for A + rig) I would increase the backstay tension to open the slot and ensure the boat is balanced .... I also use graduated marks on the backstay.... I would change the backstay tension whenever the race wind changes .... same as big boats where the sheet hand would trim by adjusting backstay continually during a race. Trust that helps
