    • @RealtorRod64
      @RealtorRod64 5 місяців тому

      Depending on which shutter your lens is mounted in, there is one of three procedures you use. The shutter may have a lever or button on the side that when depressed will open the shutter it unlikely your shutter has that feature unless it was upgrade at some point. Next would be a "T" setting on the shutter speed dial. Setting the shutter speed to "T" and pressing the shutter release will lock open the shutter until you press the shutter release a second time, finally if neither of those options are on your shutter, set the shutter dial to "B" and use a cable release with a lock feature to hold it open while you use the ground glass. That's how my old Supermatic Shutter works.

    thanks for the video. one thing you didn't mention (as far as movements) is that the bed can drop as well, which can be used in conjunction with the front tilt to get some pseudo field camera movements. but the back is static. nothing you can do with that. once the camera is open and the lens extended, you can push down on the side rails, which will drop the whole bed. it's a handy movement for landscapes. i love my copy of this camera. i have the 2x3, 6x7 and 6x6 backs for it.

    I didn’t understand that chart at all. You say those #’s on the chart are the magnification you can “get”. Can you elaborate on what you mean by that? Thanks

    • @vanguns9664
      @vanguns9664 Рік тому

      The chart shows what the magnification is at a specific exit pupil. Typical healthy adult fully dark adapted gets about 7mm. Anything more than 7mm is wasted. 7mm delivered the brightest image possible for a typical healthy adult. The chart shows what the magnification is at that 7mm (or 8mm or 6mm etc) exit pupil. Larger objectives deliver more magnification at the same exit pupil as smaller objectives. So this is important in low light situations. For bright daytime I used 2mm as that is the typical amount at which a healthy adults eye can "close down" in bright light.

    Hello, just bought this lens from Japan. Attach to my bmpcc 6k G2(S35) but can't focus with the L39 to EF adaptor. Is there any solution?

    • @photofair37
      @photofair37 Рік тому

      The EF adapter moves the lens too far away from the sensor. The lens needs to be much closer to the sensor. I thought the Black Magic cameras had a built in EF mount. If so the lens is incompatible as you can't get it close enough to the sensor. If the EF mount is an adapter and comes off, the flange distance maybe reduced enough to get an adapter that works. EF lenses are designed for SLR type cameras an thus have to be far away enough format he sensor to accommodate a reflex mirror. L39 lenses were designed for rangefinder focusing cameras that did not have a mirror and were much slimmer so they are designed to be closer to the sensor (or film).

    • @jeffeelai

    Here I am finding this 4 year old video because I just rescued this exact type of camera from being thrown away or donated to goodwill(goodwill was at my strong urging if she really did want to get rid of it) by my grandmother who is in one of her get rid of family heirlooms that she doesn’t think are family heirlooms moods. So I now have in my possession my grandfathers Kodak Signet 35 that he had in Japan in 1953-1956 when he was stationed there when he was in the army at the end of the Korean War. While it is not the actual military version, I am pretty sure it was the stock that was made available to the Army Post Exchanges(PX) for service members to purchase and I am pretty sure that is how he got it and he bought it either in Japan or at a stateside px before he shipped out. It is in a worn condition but seems complete and has the issues you mentioned, the big issue i see(being the old film camera noob I am) is that you can barely see out of the view finder, the rest is worn and aged but still seems in pretty good shape for its age

    I think the hood is a very important part of the mirror lens. It helps by blocking unfocused light going straight through. I've seen some reviews on similar lenses, and some complain about haze and low contrast, while others obviously are but they don't mention. Some also blamed it on atmospheric haze, while their video shots with a wider angle didn't show anywhere near that amount of haze. I had the same experience with mine, but when I added a 10cm long screw in metal hood, it was like a different lens, all that haze was gone and contrast hugely improved.

    • @RealtorRod64
      @RealtorRod64 2 роки тому

      A lens shade should be used on every single lens regardless of type, obviously ultra wide angle lenses have limitations on shades but the shade will increase contrast and color saturation on any lens. These Mirror lenses tend to have flat contrast as part of their design, however the shade will help minimize any further loss of contrast. As far as atmospheric haze that will always be multiplied when using tele-photo lenses at long distances.

    • @thorbjrnhellehaven5766
      @thorbjrnhellehaven5766 2 роки тому

      @@RealtorRod64 one video in particular, I noticed they didn't use any lens shade for the 500mm f/8 mirror. While waving around, they pointed at the grass right in front of them, and it was a gray/green, Then they pointed at a distance, and claimed there were a lot of atmosphere. Yes there were som atmosphere, but not that much. With my 500mm f/8, the picture is about worthless without the shade even with post, but kind of usable even before post when using shade.

  • @scottrobinson4611
    @scottrobinson4611 2 роки тому

    Regarding the optical quality of these lenses, it varies a lot with the specific model. I was on the market for one of these for a while, and ended up buying a 50-year-old 3M-5A 500mm F/8 made in the USSR, from Zenit, because the optical quality is so much better than most of the lenses you can find today. I got it for about $80 on ebay, with a very sturdy leather carry case and a bunch of filters. It's obviously an old lens so no autofocus or anything like that, but it's more than worth it for the optical quality. I bought it primarily for astrophotography so I'm manually focusing most of the time anyway. These lenses can be great, but there are a lot of crappy ones you need to avoid.
