I have spent my entire adult life teaching and playing with yarn in various ways. Creating yarn and textiles really gives me a touchstone into the past and makes me think about what is possible for the future. I love learning new things and then sharing them with others. Come join me on my journey!

Does that spinning wheel work?

An explanation of a spinning wheel, the parts you need, and how it works. If you have or are looking at getting a wheel like this, it's preferable to have a group or person you can ask to troubleshoot, as they usually need a little TLC to get running smoothly.

Short video of me spinning using long draw. The fiber is an alpaca/merino/silk blend.
I just got a spinning wheel exactly like this for an early Christmas present, Thank you for posting this video so I can restore it!
I was given an antique wheel and Im trying to find a video that explains how to install the drive band. And what kind of string do folks use?
If it's a single drive wheel you need a single drive band which can be a length of cotton, cord or wool, you can buy the bands for them it just comes down to what you want to use and what works! If it's a double drive wheel you need a longer band which goes around the wheel, onto the bobbin, around the wheel again and onto the whorl in a figure of 8 pattern. The band will cross over itself when you do this, if your spinning in a clockwise motion the crossover point will be at the bottom, if spinning anticlockwise, the crossover will be at the top. I too had a hard time finding out about my antique wheel, I wasn't sure what it was a double or single drive, but single drive wheels have a break mechanism on the mother of all, double drive wheels dont.
one or more of the tripod legs is loose in its socket. Some wood glue would help.
Hi I have been searching for someone to help me and found your old video. I have bought an old Wheel and the spokes keep jumping out as the big wheel goes around and I can not get it to spin. Do you know how to glue them or fix then so they are not loose? Thank you
Hello! Hopefully you have a spinning guild in your area so that someone can look at it in person - often the best way to decide on repairs since each wheel has its own story and oddities. Knowing nothing about your particular wheel, I'd say try wedging the spokes into place with paper or a small wad of fiber. There is also a glue-type product called something like Lock Tite that is designed to help stop chair leg wobbles. I'd leave this as a last resort, especially not knowing your situation and it's not undoable if a better fix is found.
Super helpful, thank you so much, a friend gave me an 1876 German spinning wheel he said was in working condition, you answered all my baffling questions and I'm super grateful!

maybe you could put a wedge in the table underside, to keep the legs in firmly.... and another thing: shorten the footman, and you won't need the three pads.

I have a flax spinning wheel sorta looks like yours could you please show me how to put belt on seems like my bobbin is slipping thank you vicky by the way great video
I just found a spinning wheel at the goodwill for $12.00 and because it is labor day everything was 50% off. It looks like I will have to replace the drive Band and reconnect the foot pedal to the arm of the wheel because it was connected with a strip of leather that has wone through. Other than that it seems to be in working order. I have no idea of the make or model because it is my first spinning wheel ever.

I know it a long shot as this video was posted 3 years ago, but i just got gifted an antique wheel with no identifying markings. We are trying to figure everything out, and i think we have. However, my wheel doesnt have an orifice at all. No sleeping beauty spindle either. It comes theough the front leather just as the back on yours does. There is a flyer with hooks and a very small bobbin. Everything else is what youd expect, but no orifice. Im stumped.
Its hard to be sure without a picture, but if there is a spike-type thing out the front, either the entire thing was put on backwards or yours may be of a different type called a spindle or quill wheel. Rather than an orifice, the yarn is spun off the tip of the "sleeping beauty spindle". Great wheels or walking wheels work the same way. If the entire thing is backwards and you don't have an orifice, the orifice may have snapped off from the flyer. A replacement piece could be made and attached to the flyer to get it working.
Why 2 strings to run the wheel? I have just bought one from a second-hand shop and the string it was going twice around the wheel but was broken at the end because it was tangled up in it. So why do some have one string and others two?
A single string or "belt" is used on a single-drive wheel, while a two-drive wheel has a string looped in a figure eight around the whorl and then the bobbin. A two-drive model has no braking mechanism, unlike single-drive systems.
Thank you for this video. I just came across one of these sweet and beautiful wheels yesterday and only paid $40 for it. I am working on getting her up and running now so it was great to run across your video on it 😊
Can you explained why the figure 8 and can I just put or trade slots on the wheel or trade the little wheels? My bobbin will not take the spun wool. I can't get started and I don't think my bobbin is spinning freely. It looks like the fly and bobbin are just turning at the same pace.
Thank you so much for making this video!!! I was just given an antique spinning wheel (my first spinning wheel ever), and it's in need of repair. You gave me every bit of information I needed to fix it up for use! Thank you, and God bless you!
Thank you so much!!! I finally know what my wheel is and helpful fixes for it!! Same kind! Thank so much!! Thank youu!!!! MacGyver ( my wheel) thanks you as well !!! <3 <3
I bought an old spinning wheel . It seems to be in working condition, however I can not get the yarn to wind on the bobbin. Help!
I am in the EXACT same predicament! Did you ever hey it figured out?
@@sunshinespirit1877 I still have problems at times, but try spinning the wheel the opposite direction and hold the bobbin so the yarn leader doesnot spin on the bobbin.
Try changing the tension.
How change tension
Thank you for this thorough explanation. Could you please tell me - is it necessary to have 1 figure-8 drive band, or there could be two? I bought and antique double-drive Quebec wheel and I actually put two separate strings, and it seems to work ok. But now I am in doubt. Thank you in advance.
I completely understand why you put two bands on and honestly, if you're happy with how it's spinning, there's really no reason to change it! However, you may have a harder time fixing tension issues down the road. Since you tied the bands separately, they are each at slightly different tensions and will probably stretch at different rates. There's no way to adjust for that except fiddling with the band itself. If there's any stretch in the single loop, it will be uniform through the whole thing and can be easily adjusted by nudging the tension up slightly. Thanks for the awesome question!
Yes, you are absolutely right! I already thought about it. So far, it seems to work, but I am sure at some point when I will have to deal with different fibers etc. this will be an issue. I will change it into a single band sooner rather than later. Thank you so much for answering.I appreciate it.
Sure!
