Flying Aviation Expo ACS Debate 2016
Переглядів 3387 років тому
There has been growing concern by some in the aviation community about the efficacy of the newly adopted Airman's Certification Standards or ACS. Flying Magazine in association with AOPA Pilot magazine has facilitated a debate between Rod Machado, taking the opposing view, and John King, who helped create the ACS. (Rod Machado’s views represent his position on the ACS, not AOPA’s position). The...

John painted my noseart, 46 Ercoupe, damned proud of it….
At one point, you said four pedals, but then discussed three,,, ???
1973 Bellanca Super Viking was manufactured at the Bellanca Aircraft Factory in Alexandria Minnesota. My mother worked in the upholstery department and did the entire interior of the airplane including seats in crushed velvet.
Web page ?
no real Switch Panel like many other ATDs
non turbo injected ? what ?
Informative. But I like to hear the click-clack of the switches, the rattle or wine of the fuel pumps, airfield-RT and the engaging of the starter and the engine pick-up. No music please, thats for wannabe pilots.
How much is the walk through girls bike?
Thank you so much for this, very good and very much enjoyed it. My goal is to be a pilot for wings of rescue one day. All the best from sweden
A few years late but found this on a Google search for my old bird. What a joy to see her again, still flying and looking spiff with new paint and spars! For the record, I flew S-3s, not fighters but yes, probably the best years of my life were spent teaching basic akro in her. I hope her new owner has as much fun as I did!
asking price ? i do not consider anything without a price ,,i guess you just waste time
About how much ?
Very nice but the music!!!! Why? This is annoying and covers the speaker's voice. Would you be able to re-do this without this "music"?
Love my bike Great for Grandparents to ride with the grandkids. Awesomesauce
Great little plane and ahead of it's time.
Time to take down this video don;t ya think?
NO! I own this plane now... like to show my friends what plane we bought.
No mention of TT or TSOH, must be high? Old avionics too, not ready for 2020. Marketed as if it was a used car.
nice plane...new glass panel and you're set.
I want this plane
Nothing flies like a Bellanca.
Through 1981 with the R model
Price?
Great info!
Fascinating. As someone considering starting my PPL work, this harkens back to my former life as a serious amateur mountaineer. Similar to flying, alpine climbing has (i) technical rope skills, (ii) seat-of-the pants physical skills, and (iii) judgement / risk management skills. Like flying, death can quickly result from a mistake. Climbing is self-taught, but 90% of what you need in your apprentice phase is from (i) and (ii) - similar to this debate. Most amateur accidents, are indeed from technical failures from (i) or (ii). Judgement skills at that phase are common sense, like: don’t grossly 'get in over your head'. Risk management becomes much more important but climbing accidents in this category are typically due to bravado / false confidence and climbing beyond experience level that are intrinsic personality traits and unfortunately may not be teachable. This population is a minority and dragging the whole community through training on this minority behavior seems unproductive to the majority who will not benefit, and in any event may be futile because those that need it likely won't change their intrinsic behavior. I know I'm being really blunt- but we climbers too most all have friends killed that we tried to help educate against these fundamental risks but sadly weren't successful. I admire the very good intentions on both sides and find the aviation community really impressive and inspirational.
Just bought 2 of them. Robin and his crew are awesome! Very honest and nice people. Very competent. Great bikes
Nice plane!
This is too early to say but I'd like to compare it to my Cessna 195. Got any time in your busy week to fly me?
I don't want to wear the headset on my head at all. Can I just put it on my neck, and plug in the those earphones, and bend the mic boom towards my mouth?
fantastic headsets.. wife loves them
I want to know your ear-canal baby! Lololol
I have several points to offer as they relate to about this PTS vs ACS debate: 1. It would have been less combative and more useful for the viewers in that room and the wider UA-cam audience had both speakers followed a formal debate profile: begin with a resolution for debate; brief introductions and opening statements; then one speaker make his entire case for, say, twenty minutes and the other do the same; then make brief concluding statements for at most a couple of minutes each. Which leads directly to my second point below; 2. I wonder if it occurred to Stephen Pope or both of these well-meaning instructors that the FAA could, perhaps should, require student pilots to pass both a Practical Test Standards Exam with some nuanced questions which test students' objective levels of their knowledge AND a Airman's Certification Standards exam with the primary focus on more subjective, scenario-based questions about spatial awareness and risk management. Where is the compelling requirement for a single "one-size-fits-all" exam. We can all agree that taking four hours for an oral exam and then presumably launch into another two hours for a flight test is excessive and self-serving for examiners; 3. Doesn't the public assume that being licensed by the Government to fly an airplane that could potentially turn into a lethal weapon and cause harm to their families, property, schools, shopping malls etc means the next generation of private pilots be should be both skilled and knowledgeable at the practical aspects of flying AND be well grounded in practical techniques for maintaining spacial awareness and managing and assessing risk? This discussion mirrors so many other nearly pointless disagreements I have witnessed on American mass media and throughout American society in general. It uses a partisan political method to solve disputes, rather than a respectful, collaborative, compromise-based model. It seems as a nation Americans are far too focused on a political approach to problem solving. Since they see their politicians using such a model to curry their favor, they abandon common sense and kindness, instead amassing into like-minded camps, wearing little hats and buttons so they can tell who agrees with them and who does not without ever actually speaking to one another with respect for each others' viewpoints. Like the famous feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys, all they usually accomplish by opposing another group is perpetuation of the dispute. At the end of the day that is a pointless, partisan exercise based upon individuals'' and groups' inner need to control others' thoughts, ideas, preferences or behaviors. It is a mirror not a pipeline to better cooperation and understanding. More significantly, such a confrontational approach to problem solving, however well-intentioned and cordial, fails to advance any of the ultimate goals of the public, the regulator and the flying community: safer skies through more highly skilled and knowledgeable pilots who not only can answer nuanced questions on a skills test test but also have vital training focusing on risk avoidance and management. We are a remarkable community of regulators, airport managers, FBO's, flight and ground school instructors, pilots and aviation professionals, brimming with so many high achievers. We can accomplish more than one thing at a time! Let us resolve to seek areas where we are in agreement as it relates to PTS and ACS. Let us in the future find common ground and reject those ideas or regulations or testing reforms which fail to reach a consensus among the regulator, pilots and the public, who demand the best of us every time we choose to "lift the surly bonds and dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings." Finally, many thanks to Stephen Pope and FLYING magazine, for bringing these two highly knowledgeable instructors together for an entertaining but unnecessarily argumentative discussion. Douglas G. How very moving .
