    Drew has done fantastic work on my guitars, particularly my acoustics. He made one of my 12 strings that was unplayable, play like butter. First 12 string I've had that I can reasonably easily play a barred F chord! I now live 450 miles away, and if I have a guitar that needs serious work, I'll make the road trip!

      Wrong. Its only 40 gm each whilst Taylor OEM is 44 gm. I use the same model and also Gotoh locking tuner for my other Taylor. Gotoh 510 series is recommended by Taylor and also sold on their website but more expensive compared to elsewhere.

    • @LegsON
      @LegsON 7 днів тому

      @@dualquadable Only? Dude, what are you on? 40*6=240 grams, while open-gear metal button tuning machines are a whopping 125-150 grams, that's a 30-50% weight difference, and 90-120 grams difference is huge by itself.

    • @dualquadable
      @dualquadable 7 днів тому

      @@LegsON No... I'm comparing to Taylor standard tuner that comes with my guitar not any other tuning machine. Taylor standard is 44*6=264 gm and this one is 40*6=240gm. Add six screws of 2 gm (0.33gm each) it's only 242 gm. I reckon he was talking about Taylor guitar and this particular tuner. Sorry I probably misunderstood you if comparing to another tuning machine.

    If you put the springs between the screws and the bridge plate with the screw half-way forward, problem solved. It loses a little treble and the strings go very smooth. Still, 12th fret matches the loose string.

    I believe its actually Urea rather than a cheaper type of plastic, as you used to get on guitars in the old days. last year I bought a transacoustic FG and swapped the saddle over to bone, but didn't like the sound so I swapped back. It was kind of muted and not as clear. I did find an improvement by swapping the bridge pins over to Tusq, but they needed shaving down to get a perfect fit. all the best from UK.

  • @ronhammar1154

    I have done this but I only do the saddle and I use deer antler and I can hear a difference every time but if I just do the nut by itself I do not hear a difference at all ! I have 5 accoustic guitars and the only one that has a deer antler nut is my Martin D 18 and it was done when I bought it ! I harly play the Martin anymore because I got a Norman B 20 on the curb and fixed the bridge and did a setup and made a deer antler saddle and that is the guitar I prefer now ! Who da thought that would happen ? It is hard to find a guitar that sounds as good as a Martin and if I would have got the Norman first I doubt I would have bought the Martin ! One thing about the Norman it was a demo guitar and it was the salesman sample so it was probably chosen from the pile ! I have had about 15 Yamahas over the years and I kept my FG 75 red label 3/4 size and it makes a good picker ! What I really need is a good used guitar that has had all the bad chords and notes played out of it ! LOL

    I was so scared, like I really needed a stuck pin in a 60yr old guitar. I tried every tool in the junk drawer. The answer is a string winder. I never noticed that before. There's a notch that fits perfect and pulls right out. Man, feel like I dodged a bullet, can't afford some repair like that. Just don't force it, applies to most things.

    Thankyou for tips Drew. AWESOME. I had a guitar as a kid, and I don't think the bridge had pins, (the strings were tied on I think?). I was at a bit of a loss to know what to do with a 2nd hand guitar I bought a couple of years ago with bridge pins 😆. Your tips have been an eye opener. I am in Australia .... just so you know.

    The tuner is shot with grease . By the manufacturer. Use grease. Use ptfe grease once . It will never be an issue during ones lifetime. Oil is the wrong product. As the actual manufacturer.

    I thought I should let you know that when you started the first picking and strumming, I thought to myself: This would be a good guitar for Gordon Lightfoot's music, and then you started to sing If You Could Read My Mind. This also illustrates why a serious guitarist should own different instruments from different makers and different designs and eras. As much as I love my Gibson Hummingbird and my Martin D1, there are tunes which only a well made OM will make them shine.

    Drew, I’m doing an Epi dot. Question: your caps, they aren’t connected to both pots like I see on gibsons LP SG etc. my stock Dot is the same as what you have there. I see that the tones left side lug has a connecting wire that goes to its respective volume pot. Is that connecting wire acting as a proxy for the typical connection of a cap to both pots? In other words, it seems a wire is taking the place of both cap legs in a typical Gibson system. Is that correct?

    • @DrewsGuitarShop
      @DrewsGuitarShop 7 днів тому

      I prefer to wire my tone pots like this. The reason is that I think it helps reduce noise and makes the wiring more modular and easier to work on. There is more than one way to wire a tone pot, it comes down to preference. Using the cap to connect saves on materials and time. I am less concerned with time and materials as I am with noise and repairability so I do it the other way.

I'm not inclined to drill out the bridge holes confident that there must be a manufacturer of pins who makes the proper sized pins for such a popular series of guitar?

    My DXME served me well for many gigs, great sound and pretty reasonable plugged in. But after 10 years of use it did physically deteriorate: rosette decal scratched away, as you see above, couple of tuners stripped, but most seriously the top developed a pretty noticeable belly-bulge. When I last pulled it out of the case, It was still quite playable, but had lost all midrange! Lots of feelings for that old laminate Martin, but in comparison my Yamaha FG730, bought around the same time has only improved with age.
