Bluebeam Revu - Measuring Drainage (October 2024 Update)
Following on from my update on the Brickwork and Scaffolding workflow, this video shows the progress made on the Drainage workflow.
The file size is now much smaller and the whole processor is a lot faster and smoother.
There are also a few other tricks in the video which help speed up the process when you have missing or miss-matched information, etc..

Bluebeam Revu - Using a Custom Template

Quite often the details for a project are on multiple A3 drawings instead of a single A1 or A0 drawing. This can make it easier for printing our use out on site but does have its drawbacks when it comes to measuring at tender stage. So, what you can do is create a master template where all the individual drawings can be placed. You can even have viewports ready for when there is a different sca...

Bluebeam and Excel - How Much Info From 2 Minutes of Markups?

So I know I've done similar videos to this in the past, but I thought I'd do a quick demonstration of just how much usable information you can generate from 15 or 20 markups created in less than 2 minutes in Revu. The markups are combined with tables of standard details in Excel using Power Query resulting in single markups generating multiple different items which are then automatically priced...

Bluebeam Revu 21 Glitch - Resizing Text Boxes
Переглядів 844Рік тому
Another minor but irritating glitch in Revu 21 is when text boxes which are not set to automatically resize do so. This happens when you enter data directly into the text box itself. However, if you enter the data into the Comments section of the Properties Panel or the Markup List then the box will not resize. #bluebeam #bluebeamrevu #bluebeamtips #revu21

Bluebeam Revu - Basic Sequence Tool

Revu sequence tools are often created by grouping different markups with a text box but this leaves you with a 'grouped' item in your Markup List. If you just want to create a very basic sequence tool, you can use the border to the text box itself to finish your shape which then leaves you with just a single item in the Markup List. #bluebeam #revu #bluebeamrevu #bluebeamtips #bluebeamtricks

Hello could you do a video showing how you get set up in bluebeam to a point where you are ready to do a drainage takeoff and how you work round it? Things like getting your tool chest set up and the use of Layers. How do you get it to work out the depths of drainage runs automatically?
Hi! I've had a few enquiries like this and I've actually been discussing with someone how we might do some proper training videos. Unfortunately, we aren't there yet with how to do this but please stay tuned and hopefully we'll get there soon!
@@vinicsurveying Just watched your other recent video on the brickwork takeoff. The way you have your bluebeam set up is brilliant. A few videos showing how you get to that from scratch would be very helpful. Also a run through of the excel spreadsheets and how you link it to the bluebeam. This would save me hundreds of hours doing drainage takeoffs/ brickwork etc for civil works.
Hi would you sell the spreadsheet for this?
Hi, this is part of a much larger spreadsheet so would need to be broken out. Protecting the spreadsheets is also proving a bit of an issue at the moment. However, I am getting a few enquiries about my spreadsheets and setups at the moment so I am looking at how I can make these available.
@@vinicsurveying Thanks, let me know, if they become available please.
How do I set this up? Looks like something I would benifit from!
The custom columns are found in the Markup List drop down at the bottom of the screen. After selecting Columns then select Manage Columns after which you should find the custom columns 'menu'. Is it fencing that you're looking at measuring or something else?
How do you import the csv? Via powerquery?
Hi - yes, all imported via power query.
how do you manually add the items that get missed by the visual search to the same cluster/group of results?
You can select one of the Markups then right-click. From the pop-up menu select Resume Count and then you can manually add more instances.
Amazing tools and skills Vince! Thank you for making the time to put this video together to share the concepts.
Thanks David! I really enjoyed doing this one.
Great insight on the capabilities of Bluebeam and excel. Excellent spreadsheets too
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for providing informative videos,
Glad you like them!
Great idea Vince! Thank you for posting this Do you set the scale on each of the details so that you can markup/measure on them on the same sheet?
Thanks David! The tools are all set to scales but unfortunately ths doesn't work for counts or the custom line types. However, when I start measuring a job it's quite quick to change the line thicknesses or the scale of a count item as I don't have too many tools to start with.
Great video, What spreadsheet are you using?
It's a spreadsheet that I made several years ago now.
Great video. I’m a fairly new QS just about to start with a new company. They don’t currently have a QS so I have free rein in regards to software & I’m leaning toward blue beam. How do you find it?
Revu is great! I've tried a few diferent products and think that Revu is by far the best. It's easy to customise everythng to suit your specific needs. If you're looking to get a new licence(s) then can I suggest you reach out to the guys at at brightergraphics.com
Hello, I really appretiate the way you work with Bluebeam. But for me as a learner, its more challenging to grasp everything. Could you please recommend me where can I learn and be expert in using Bluebeam for Quantity takeoffs. Thanks!!!
If you are using Revu 21 then you should have free access to Bluebeam University where you'll find loads of learning courses. Another great place to look is the @UChapter2 website which is run by Troy De Groot - on there you'll not only be able to see what others are doing with Revu, there are courses and you can ask questions as well.
Nice job thank you
Glad you like this!
I appreciate all the tricks Vincent has shared, which have made my takeoff easier.
I'm really happy that you've found some of my videos of help!
Bro your page is next level 😳. This is next level stuff
Wow, thanks! Very happy that you like some of the bits on here!
It didn't work at all for me. I even tried adding a dimension into the group. When I pasted it into the second drawing, the dimension number changed from 10,000 to 20,000.
Did you set the scale in the toolbox okay?
Very nice trick to safe time, thanks, for sharing the information.
No problem!
👍 Really good to see other Bluebeam users creating Trade mark ups in the tool chest, also note the use of additional line styles. I may need some more tuition to create such tools.
Glad you like those! I have Custom Profiles for each trade that I look at with various Tool Chests within each profile. For measuring groundworks I actually have four different profiles due to the different tools and custom columns required for each. What training have you done so far?
None, self taught from Bluebeam Tutorials and You Tube. Length lines I use are just basic straight line in different colours. I like how you have projecting course 75mm line, also the 150mm thick cills. This makes it easier to see your mark ups.
What trade are you measuring for?
We are brickwork contractors. I have also watched your video's on take offs on excel spreadsheets, I assume the contain macros to. Impressive work and quick. Well done !
Thanks. I swore for years that marking up hard copies of drawings by hand and then using the spreadsheets was the quickest and best way of doing things. However, I'm now doing everything on Bluebeam and not only am I just as quick but the level of detail output is incredible. It also means that anyone can pick look at one of the drawings and automatically see what has been measured.
@vinicsurveying I am having troubles with getting the exact radius and measurements lines within the arch. I was also thinking about adding color gradients at different distances to indicate pixel density that normal cctv calculator and design software use. Relatively new to bluebeam and we are an IT, Structured Cabling, and Security Provider. So far we have use several other system designed for our kind of business all lacking 1 key factor....an offline mode. BlueBeam seems to check most of the boxes for better handoffs from sales to operations. It is a bit overkill, but the offline capability is key. Thank you
Hi @mattlittle2901, I've also done a video on 'Creating a Donought Area' which you can use to create the shapes that you need.
Hello Sir, Just watched your video, and As I researched in google and did not find aything usefull only one reddit person that also happens the same shit, but when I save a pdf, automatically the layers dissapear, Idk whats going on, but It happens everytime, and I can't undo because is when I saved the file lol. Do you know anything about it?
Are the layers totally lost or are they just not showing when you reopen the document? The only thing that I can think of is that your default view has a doesn't show all of the available layers.
A very creative way!
Thank you! 😊
Hi, after long time I saw your video, I hope everything fine with you.
Very busy here but all is good thank you.
@@vinicsurveying Good to heard that.
Great cctv tool creation. Do you have a tutorial on how it was created?
I don't at the moment unfortunately. Which part of it are you interested in?
Is there anyway to get a video on how you created this? or anyway to gain access to this tool? it would be very helpful@@vinicsurveying
Sorry for the late reply but things are rather hectic at the moment - I will try to do a video showing how to make the tool in the next couple of weeks.
Hey do you think you could share some of your custom tools ?
Unfortunately, I'm still working on a lot of the things that I am demonstrating. Also, the tools won't work without the Excel spreadsheets which are proving a bit difficult to protect at the moment. Once I get it all figured out I'll look at the best way of putting everything out there.
Hi Vince, every one of your videos is so helpful. Thank you!
I'm glad you like these. I've been wayliad a bit recently but hopefully I'll be posting a few more in the near future.
Great video , do you have a list we can download for your tools please ?
Sorry - none of the tools are available for download at the moment.
How did you get the custom measurement section in properties? Like at 1:45 where it says “Work details” “Lift” etc
They are Custom Columns that are cretaed in the Markup List. When you create them, one option you have is to create list from which the user must choose.
I see, thank you @@vinicsurveying
Amazing video. Greatly appreciate it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good one
Thanks
how do you deduct wall openings when taking off wall area, for interior walls?
For the internal walls I'll measure the length on plan the do a quick sketch to scale markup which I then overmark with the internal wall - if there are several walls, they can all be added together in one sketch to scale item. The openings are then deducted in the same way as the external walls. When I infill the opening with the door type I can then automatically create the information for the lintel, cavity closer for party walls, etc..
Great video! I’ll have to try the stitching together of the drawings as that could save a lot of time. One thing I’d be keen to see is how you approach a cut and fill exercise for a large housing development. This takes me a lot of time tediously labelling each plot with levels - not sure if there’s a quicker way!
If this isn't done by someone with CAD then I do have a set up for it, but it does involve entering a lot of levels. Once the areas are exported to Excel then all of the areas are automatically grouped and sorted - how I allocate the measures will depend on the areas and levels involved. I then have details for topsoil strip, min strip if no topsoil, stated formation level if required, depth of finishes along with say 6 existing levels and 6 finished levels. This sounds a lot but most of the details are prepopulated apart from the actual levels.
Thanks for the well presented video.. can you explain how you get your Markup Summary to link direct to into a excel sheet please
The Markup Summary is exported to a csv but you don't need to open this - it is just saved. Power Query in Excel is then used to find the csv file and pull all of the information into Excel.
Very nice information and explaination, Could you please share the practice file? It will be much appreciated.
I'll have a look at putting something together when I get a bit of time.
@@vinicsurveying thanks for your kind reply
Great spreadsheet! I would definitely be interested in getting a copy of this and your brickwork take-off spreadsheet if this is something you are willing to pass on or sell.
Glad you liked those. I have looked at possibly selling the spreadsheets but finding a suitable way of protecting them is the issue - I am still working on this. What do you use for doing your brickwork take-offs at the moment? Is it a manual thing with a scale ruler, highlighters, etc. or something digital?
@@vinicsurveying I have developed a spreadsheet of my own which I’ve been using for a few years now, but think there is a few things I could use from yours to further streamline things.
Think i'll give Revu 21 onwards a miss, as they are going subscription only, just like adobe did.
I guess it depends on how much you get out of it as to whether it makes it worthwhile. The amount of time and effort it saves me over a course of a year makes the approx £300 seem quite inexpensive but if you only use the software on an infrequent basis then I understand what you mean.
Where you have the "Update" button, what command or function is connected to this for importing the data?
Power Query is being used to pull in the information from the CSV file then manipulate it. The button is literally just runs a macro which 'refreshes' one of the final query.
Great video thanks for sharing! Starting as an estimator at a groundworks company soon so your videos have been very helpful. Did you create the custom toolset yourself or can these be downloaded? Likewise with the linked spreadsheet, is this something you have developed yourself?
Hi. Glad you like the video! I have created both the toolsets and spreadsheets for all my setups. They can take a bit of time but that is nothing compared to the time saved once you can start using them. And most importantly, everything is how you want it to be. Best of luck in your new role!!!
Master of bluebeam thanks for sharing
No problem 👍
Vince, I'm really enjoying your videos and the wealth of information they give.
Thanks Steve!
Hi. How is the double line set to the line itself and not centre? What change in settings should we do to make that offset left and right tools?
The offset is created in the custom line style settings. Additional lines can be added in stage from 1 to 10 or from -1 to -10. In Part 3, I show the lines for a 900mm wide path set 100mm away from a house. This was chosen as it is something I frequently come across, but it is also a very fortunate coincidence that it works out perfectly with the spacings available. The first custom style is set with the first line is set at the spacing of 1 and the second at 10. A second style is created with spacings of -1 and -10. You then just get used to which of the line styles you need to use in each location to make sure that you are offset on the correct side of whatever you are marking around. Hope that makes sense!
@@vinicsurveying Got it. Thanks for the reply...👍👍
I thought I was crazy and couldnt find any forums/help sites addressing this. I've created some pretty useful takeoff tools that are assigned to a layer but this continues to happen and makes the markup information very scattered and unorganized

I have 2 different sheets with different sheet size and scales. When it process after doing the alignment, I end up with a blank page. Any ideas for what went wrong?
Hi. I am aware of a couple of glitches in Revu but haven't come across this one before. One thing to try maybe, overlaying in a different order i.e. use the second drawing as the 'base' this time. Let me know how you get on.

Our whole team has been extremely crippled by this issue. We have been trying to resolve the issue but nothing is working. Bluebeam tried for months to force us to believe that the problem is on our side, to finally before Christmas admitting that layers have been a very delicate feature and they had a lot of issues with it since 20.2.70. They even asked us to test some early evaluation releases and send them our comments. This is just unbelievable how much we have had so many errors and so much time lost because of them. Until they finally wake up and work all these bugs out of their software I will never recommend getting in this horrible trap that we got caught into. Bluebeam has been the most unprofitable expense we made over the last decade, and personally the most unreliable software I've ever used in my life. Combined with the fact their support is an absolute joke, it makes using their software a truly terrible experience.
Where are you based? The support here in the UK acknowledged there was a problem last September and said they were working on a fix. They also sent me a link to reinstall 20.2.70 as that was the last version without an issue. However, going back to that version when I'm upgraded to Revu21 is not a good option. However, I'm also experiencing a couple of major issues with Excel at the moment which are just as frustrating. The first relates to something called data.mashup and happens when you run a particular Power Query setup. The first time you run the query it takes a minute or two but if you run it again it can take up to an hour. The only way to stop this is to close Excel and restart it between each refresh. The latest (and most problematic!) is an issue with the updates they have done which results in some spreadsheets totally crashing Excel as you open them! These can be spreadsheets that have worked for years. Microsoft's temporary fix for now is for me to reset my version of Office to a January 2021 version so I have lost many of the new features that have been released in the meantime!
@@vinicsurveying Thank you so much for your response, it's extremely appreciated. It's really comforting to know that we are not alone living in this nightmare. I don't know a lot of companies who embraced Bluebeam as much as we did, so it's difficult sometimes to gauge if we are just odd occurrences or if what we're experiencing is related to the fact that we pushed the envelope a little too far and the software we bought was just ultimately not at all what what it was sold to be. We are in Canada, QC to be more precise. We bought the 34 licenses through a value added reseller who originally bundled Bluebeam with a "premium" support option of their own, which ultimately ended up having the same effect as paying for polluted air, i.e. just a bunch of unresponsive incompetents with little to no knowledge about anything but how to setup a GUI. Little did we know, this was only the beginning of this ugly rabbit hole. Since most of the team where I work only speaks French, obviously they were rather limited while trying to troubleshoot the various bugs out in order to try to have something as close as an efficient work day as possible, and so that's how I sort of became aware/responsible for finding workarounds to the overwhelming number of issues with Bluebeam since last summer. As far as our experience went, there was practically no support, neither from our VAR nor Bluebeam directly, despite paying not only for a license but also for support, let alone in double. I can't tell whether it's because they don't have enough knowledge of their software, or because they just don't care, but it took 6 months and a lot of screen recordings to show them what exactly was happening. I even sent them all the custom tools I created, the main enterprise profile, and a couple of .pdf takeoffs as well with long emails filled with extremely precise explanations. It took almost 6 months for them to understand that the layers were not functioning properly. They finally recognized that there was a serious issue and the solution they proposed was to roll back to 20.2.70 and also they invited me to test early evaluation releases to see if we could eventually deploy a new version securely without jeopardizing all of our work because they don't do theirs properly. I might sound like a whiny boy but I have just never ever experienced something that ridiculous in my life. Even with Dassault Systèmes it was not that ugly. I would even have a hard time recommending Bluebeam to anyone even if it was free. That's how low they have fallen in my book. I just don't understand how a company can be so unresponsive and so incompetent at resolving such fundamentally serious bugs such as layers for Bluebeam. It's the absolute first criterium that we use in a PQ over the exported .csv. Talking about Power Query, 95% of all the material takeoff, manufacturing and installation calculations is done through a multitude of queries. I'm not a Microsoft MVP but people like to call me their Excel ninja, and I have a feeling about your query getting clogged and taking a lot of time refreshing on the second even worse on the third and so on. I had a similar issue a few years back and it felt very similar to what you're experiencing right now. Basically when I was refreshing for the first time it was okay but as soon as I was hitting CTRL+ALT+F5 the second time it was taking double the time to complete. I found out that the table with the results from the query was aggregating the results from itself because the query was programmed at folder level instead of table level, so each time I was refreshing it was aggregating the last results and so it was getting bigger and bigger. Since I was on Azure cloud it was taking an eternity to complete, and one time I had something like a query with 20K lines and it occurred to me that there was something wrong because it was taking 10 minutes, then 20 , then 40 minutes... to complete something with like 8-10 queries in one file. I know a few people who had the same issue and this was the culprit so I thought it would help. Anyway thank you very much again for your response it's honestly super appreciated. I hope Bluebeam refocus on improving their software instead of their sales. There is a very impressive potential in this software, I can still see it despite all the rage I have against them for being shabby lazy incompetents. Sadly right now this great potential is overshadowed by all the naughty bugs that we are experiencing, but let's hope they will do the right thing and put the proper energy at the proper place. Reliability will always be king, but these companies are sadly getting more and more into smoke and mirrors to sell their snake oil, forgetting/ignoring the most important and most fundamental thing in the sake of money. Imagine having the most beautiful/powerful car in the world with all the bells and whistles but it never starts, how much would it be worth? How much would it make you feel like a fucking looser?
@@_symmetry_ It sounds like your reseller was absolutely useless which is totally unacceptable especially when they are charging you! My reseller here in the UK has been great - if they can't help then they try to get hold of someone at Bluebeam to who can. And there isn't any sort of maintenance fee from them either. If you are still using Bluebeam, then it might be worth you looking at their UA-cam channel as they are posting loads of short videos at present - Brighter Graphics at @bluebeammeup With regards Excel, I can see what you are saying about your experience but I think my sheet is just a bit too complicated - it is the drainage one that I have posted an example of on here. Basically, it brings in the info from a Bluebeam generated CSV then merges and appends that data to a number of other tables that are already in the spreadsheet. I probably need to look at rewriting everything as I've learned quite a bit since writing it but finding the time is difficult.
Please how did you create the grid lines
Have a look at this one ua-cam.com/video/wVf7SBejxiY/v-deo.html
Hi Vince, Thanks for the Video, very informative. One question, How do you create your custom mark up line styles? Cheers Tim
Hi Tim. On the Line Styles box the first item in the drop-down list is 'Manage'. You need to select that and from there you can start adding your own styles. The same applies to the hatch patterns.
Great Video Vince. It would be nice to see the Excel integration. Is the spreadsheet something you've put together?
Hi Steve. The spreadsheet is one of mine. It relies on power query which involves an awful lot of merging and appending of tables as well as quite a few formulas. It takes up a lot of processing power and sometimes I have to restart Excel. It still beats having to enter everything into a spreadsheet manually though!
May I ask how you set up custom properties?
Hi. Once you have got your custom tools in a tool chest then you can start looking at the properties - as well as changing colours, etc you can also add additional information via custom columns, line styles, hatching, etc..
I have found since 2017 the software has gone down hill... It's moving more and more away from a measuring tool and more towards a site tool for mark ups. If you haven't used 17 just for a laugh install it and load a few drawings up, the speed it renders is so much faster than the later versions. I had loads of rendering issues spent thousands on a CAD desktop system set-up to find out bb still only uses single thread processing performance. Have they released any new features for measuring is this new version?
I don't think there are too many changes in Revu 21 - it is mainly the introduction of Bluebeam Cloud and the ability to easily swap your Revu licence between different computers which are the main features I think. With regards the rendering, on my computer this has got a lot better since they started using the computers graphics card although I'm really not sure how that all works. The possibilities for the measuring tools seem pretty endless to me at the moment but I still wish they'd add a link to Excel which lets you use the full Markup list.
Only solution BB currently has is to revert back to the previous update.
Apparently, you need to go back to version 20.2.70 not 20.2.80 as that still has glitches too.
