You are a luddite. The comment from @dM-lj1we is spot on. I don't agree with a number of your reviews. Sorry, but I am done with your channel. I'm not much for your swearing either. Happy reading to you all the same. (Not only that I can't stand disco - I am a Bob Dylan fan). To quote Radiohead - What the hell am I doin' here? I don't belong here,
Pretty good channel mate.👍
I read Vladislavic's book Double Negative, quite a while ago now, and I'd recommend it. I'll read anything published by Archipelago Books.
Glad to have you back. I'm reading Jeff Vandermeer's Southern Reach quartet and just started Infinite Jest.
The Pool does sound like a short story, a short story called The Swimmer by John Cheever. I thought there was more depth to How Late It Was How Late, but the Scots language thing didn’t bother me, probably because I didn’t know enough to notice it. Not sorry to say that I’ve never read Ali Smith.
I sound exactly like this guy every time I tell others about the book I'm reading. I will just exhale loudly and beg that we move on. 😅 Someone help me. 😂
Can't get Offshore at my library, but I just reserved The Bookshop and The Blue Flower
"what is she 5?!" -- the roast on Ali Smith goes HARD 🤡 hot take but i totally think the seasonal quartest should've been twitter threads.. adding Offshore to my tbr!
Only one I’ve read is how Late It Was, How Late. I liked it but don’t know if it should have won the Booker as I don’t think I read any of the other nominees that year. I tossed Lincoln in the Bardo after reading only a few pages but after seeing that u seemed to like it now think maybe I shouldn’t have . Plus it cost me nearly twenty bucks I don’t have. Be well.⚛️❤
Can’t believe the most boring book you ever read is a 3. expected a 0, disliked
Penelope Fitzgerald is my favourite writer in the world!
Ali Smith was unreadable to me. I just could not relate to any of it and gave up. The characters seemed so entitled.
You do a great job of filtering my TBR 😂 I've been very disappointed with the Booker Prize, seems like I'm not the only one.
a very good book
Percival is a genius! A masterful wordsmith, a black hole! In "James," he is playing with the reader, speaking not about 'black' matters, but about 'gray' matters. Not white people, but "Wide" people (see the image of a black hole). Not slavery, but "Slavic"-ery. Not racism, but "Rascible"-ism. For instance, irascible comes from the Latin word 'irasci,' meaning “to become angry.” So, if someone or something is described as irascible, it means they have a quick temper or are easily provoked to anger. Rudeness. Examples: "The irascible manager had a reputation for snapping at employees." "Her irascible nature made it challenging to have a calm discussion with her." __________ Note: In "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, the racial slur of "n*gger" is used frequently, including in reference to Jim, the enslaved man who is one of the novel’s central characters. The slur appears approximately 200 times throughout the text, used by both the narrator, Huck, and other characters, which feels *RUDE* to Black readers.
let it be known i did guess my citation, with some doubts and some embarrassment 👀
Best Brady Bunch episode ever. I had a hard time recognizing Andy without a hat, but had zero issues with Alyssa’s purge mask. I got three of the booktuber quotes, none of the book titles, and Gemma’s multiple book prize pitches will live forever in my heart. You all made my short list. Maybe next time there could be an actual purge? I’m kind of expecting it now.

I just started reading this book and so far, my impression is based entirely on the fact that it has the sentence "The apartment smells of scent" which I cannot stop laughing at
The characters didn't seem real or fleshed out to me.
Have most of these books. Do not like Winterson generally, but there are some ok stuff of hers. Booker prize is for me better recomendation than Nobel. But there are still no guarantees for anything.
Also I think you are reading to deep into The Vegetarian. Its not a realistic novel, more a Bartleby like parabel, I believe. But I agree its not her best work. Human acts is way better and I just started We do not part (in Dutch translation) and I think its gonna be a banger.
There are actually 11 novels (and also some short stories and essay collections) in Korean, but only 4 have been translated (yet)
⚛️❤
Three books into the short list: The Safe Keep, James, and Held. The Safe Keep was good, not great, but I enjoyed it and it has stayed with me. James was okay, lost its charm quickly, and I found myself just wanting to get to the end. Held I was actually forgetting as I read it. At one point I thought - what a freaking mess...
You clearly haven't met a lot of neurosurgeons in real life. They do be having that rizz.
OK, it's quite good that an author with a popular book has been awarded the prize but I can't deny, I'm disappointed. I read The Vegetarian, and I think I got what she was trying to do, but I found it very clumsily executed, and not involving. I reject that I cannot understand it because I am a Westerner and a man, as I have read plenty of literature by women authors from different cultures who succeed in allowing you under the skin of their characters. I prefer to read more of them than Han Kang.
Damn you are good at reviewing books. Tend to agree on The Vegetarian (will be reviewing it soon). I do wonder if the ‘poetic prose’ thing could be to do with the version read by the judges… maybe it’s better in the Swedish translation? But then she did win the IBP so 🤷♂️
I think that the Nobel prize has become insignificant for many years now. True literary giants such as Joyce, Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf or Nabokov never received it. A lot of writers who did get it are forgotten and deservedly so. I do believe that many people would be unable to say who got it last year. Not that it really matters anyway. By the way, I enjoyed your review.
Phillip Roth never won either, which is crazy.
I respect your right to an opinion, and I also sometimes felt bored reading The Vegetarian, but I want to point out to all of us that Han Kang is Korean. Her critique of society and human relationships occurs in that context. Also, subtlety and slow, meticulous, understated art is a tradition in Korea. As a westerner who lived in Korea, I can say I also find some part of her writing "boring" but let's not forget that 1) it is a work in translation and we are not, in fact, experiencing her language choices directly, and 2) she is writing within a cultural/artistic context which may not be familiar to us. As an example, I'd like to refer you to this traditional dance form, in which tiny movements and slow turns are very meaningful. (cue to to about 1:00 so see quickly what I mean.)ua-cam.com/video/oOq2fhNKqQc/v-deo.html

You are wrong if you assume that the Booker prize influences the Swedish Academy. Traditionally, the Booker prize is compared in Sweden to the Swedish August Prize which is for "simpler", more commercial and broad literature. The Nobel Prize is supposed to award authors who are on a higher level than that. Interestingly, the award to Han Kang has come under withering criticism by Swedish literary critics (including former members of the Nobel committee) which would suggest that the Swedish Academy is probably deeply split. In her defense, the academy highlighted two books (the one you liked, and the one not yet translated into English).
Spoken like someone who doesn't know the first thing about Brazilian culture and our many belief systems.
Which he admitted to.
I believe that, for some books, you need to be a woman or have experienced the reality of someone who identifies as one to fully appreciate them. Han Kang is truly exceptional. Her books are raw and real, yet still full of beauty. It's also known that her English translations are not the best. I first read The Vegetarian in English, but I didn’t connect with the story. Then I switched to the German translation, and it was like reading two different books.
Is the German one translated directly from Korean?? I looked into trying to get a Swedish version (my native language) for the reason you described, but it's translated from the English. Otherwise, I'm stuck with muddling through with my mediocre Korean for a more direct read. Also- I agree that, as a woman, it may be easier for me to relate to her work. Having been married (and divorced) in Korea, I saw enough that I found the husband and family in the first section believable.
Are the majority of Nobel Prize judges women or were the men able to appreciate it too?
@@annadahland6533 yes it's directly translated from korean :)
@@Eternalplay that is just my opinion. you are more than welcome to have your own.
@@annadahland6533 what är de svenska översättningarna gjorda från engelska översättningar på alla hennes böcker? Det suger ju
