ev'tach (havdalah) - marni loffman
As shabbat comes to a close, stars begin to shine overhead. Twenty-five hours of relating to time differently are behind us, and we pause to sing. We watch a dancing flame, breathe in the smell of spices, taste the sweetness of wine or grape juice, and listen to the sound of our voices. This ritual is called “havdalah.”
Havdalah is a Jewish transition ritual which marks the shift from shabbat to the "sheshet yemei hama'aseh," the “six days of doing”. As we transition from the sanctuary of shabbat to the six days of the week, this shift may usher various changes in each individual and community. Maybe we are moving from rest to work, from connection to separation, from stillness to movement, from spaciousness to business, from patience to urgency, and much more.
Of course, shabbat is not the only time in which we experience holiness, in which we practice different ways of existing, elevate meaning, connection, rest, patience and presence. We can bring the "kodesh" (sacred) into the "chol" (mundane) and of course there is "chol" in the "kodesh." And yet, any time we find ourselves in a unique cocoon of time, when we intentionally rest, find meaning, pray, sing, eat and dream, going back to the world of maintenance, upkeep and goal-orientedness can be jarring and challenging. Thankfully, there is this ritual to guide us through.
Ev'tach is the opening song to the havdalah ritual. Classically named after its opening words "hinei el yeshua'ti" (behold, divine source of my redemption), I have decided to name this setting after the fourth word of the prayer "ev'tach," meaning "I will trust.” Change is vulnerable, transitions full of many emotions. During these times, it can be hard to trust these processes of change. The Jewish tradition offers this prayer, this incantation, the self-affirmation that we are not alone during these changes. The test helps us remember, that although it feels nearly impossible to trust, it is precisely that act of surrender to being with the One, letting ourselves trust Process, Divine, Sacred, Multiverse or whatever name you have for this “Thing” in which we are all enveloped, that will carry us through our changes.
Havdalah is a transformative ritual for changes, distinctions, and transition. May this song provide comfort and a reminder that you are not alone. Through trusting your voice, the Great Mystery, the joy and connection or community, you will find strength and peace in the process.

Behold! God is my deliverance, I trust in God, Mystery, Interconnection, the Multiverse, the One, and I am not afraid.
God is my strength and song, God will be my deliverance.
You shall draw water in joy from the waters of deliverance. Deliverance is God's, for His nation that is his praise, Selah.
The Lord of Hosts is with us, Oneness is our support, the Keeper of Jacob, Selah.
The Lord of Hosts, praiseworthy is the one who trusts in the One. The Lord will save, the King will answer on the day that we call.
There was light, joy, gladness and honor for the Jews -
So may there be for us. So may there be for us.
I will raise up the cup of deliverance, and call in the name the Lord.

about the song: the melody from the ashamnu prayer is beleived to date back many centuries if not millennia. this prayer is a recurring feature in the jewish liturgy surrounding the new year. we begin saying it at selichot, a forgiveness seeking prayer service in the month of elul, through yom kippur, the bookend of the yamim nora'im, the jewish days of awe. this prayer is a confessional list o...

based on the popular text in tehilim (psalms) 118:5, this song is about being held in our moments of distress. during journeys, change and transition, we find ourselves in a vulnerable place. anani is a song on my upcoming album, the long short path, a collection of music exploring the feelings of existing in between, of not quite belonging. it is an offering of witness and strength for our mor...

tefilat haderech is a Jewish prayer recited at the onset of new journeys. as we travel through life, regularly encountering new paths, planned and unplanned, tefilat haderech is a prayer of yearning, a song of longing for comfort, safety, joy and peace as we encounter each new chapter. tefilat haderech is an old, old text written by Jewish rabbis in the Talmud. It serves as an incantation, a ri...

a few weeks ago, I joined a nature walk with a Celtic spirituality group at the invitation of my friend Eamon Ó Sé. As we walked in silence through an old growth forest in Connecticut, I felt wonder, joy, presence and calm. I felt deep connection with the plants and people around me. I wanted it to last forever. I immediately thought to myself, "I NEED to come back here as soon as possible and...

Everything we do and create is in a state of process, continually becoming. Singing my song, Tranquility, with Mbeki Yunana on Saturday night was so special. The song took on new life, as it does each time it is sung. The first time I sang it was at Wadsworth falls with Fatima Abbasi. The second time, I sang it to the falls at Falling Waters, Frank Lloyd Wright's home in Pennsylvania, and then ...

Compassionately accepting all the ways emotionally, intellectually, behaviorally that we exist right here in this moment allows us to connect. To be present with our selves and our own contradictions helps us build the muscles of witnessing the complexity of the beings around us. It turns us towards each other with open hearts and loving perspectives. Not only is finding home in ourselves and o...

Saludos cordiales. I am thankful to be alive and I am proud to be alive although I grew up in germany which was almost my death promise, I am now here and can send my message to the world. I am not quiet anymore and I have no fear, no matter how much I got suppressed and threatened in the past. People wake up, or the world will fall into pieces. It is almost too late and every good person who doesn't elect fascist or fanatic regimes and shows peace and love in the space around them, but no tolerance to hate and rascism, is one more chance of saving this world. Please do what you can to protect the freedom that so many people in many decades were fighting for and still do. I believe in you. Ahava

I feel incredibly angry that such beautiful culture has been appropriated by a small bunch of wealthy Jewish people with colonial ambitions. We Muslims learnt this the hard way in Saudi Arabia, and now reject the notion that our emotions for our heritage can be captured by any flag. I hate Israel, but I am in love with this culture.

@marni. Please define or bring more clarity to what you meant in your description of this beautiful song as ritual magic. Since I don’t speak Hebrew I must be careful that I am not listening to something that belies a belief in magic. Can you or some please help me with that and I ask that does anyone understand my concern as a Christian that I need to be careful of what I listen to. Thanks in advance of any insights. And may Adonai bless you all.
