You stopped walking too soon as you still had another full second and a half before the tarantula jumps and attacks. You will be surprised how long you can remain walking for as the game is way easier to catch bugs in New Horizons compared to Wild World. But yes if this is your first animal crossing game then it would appear to be stressful and I can understand your situation to not test your limits and play it safe.
