In a California recording studio, I played a 19th century Steinway grand with 85 keys, missing the top three keys of a standard modern 88-key piano. In 1974 at Whitman College I got to play a Bosendorfer with extra bass keys lurking under a hinged cover. 8-octave pianos exist (from F below the lowest A to F above the highest C). Regulated touch and tune are better criteria for choosing an instrument to play, since it is harder to hear the pitches so far below 50 hz. Low bass keys make a big noise for sound effects, though.
