Class C Airport Operations in the RV-12
In this episode, we take the RV-12 into a Class C Airport (KACY Atlantic City). We also talk about VNAV mode so we can arrive at certain waypoints at an altitude that makes sense...since we are NOT flying a typical traffic pattern.
Its helpful to get on Flight Following (traffic advisories) before you get to the Class C.

Mom's First Flight
Переглядів 35010 місяців тому
Mom has wanted to go flying for a long time.. but anxiety has held her back. We once made it onto the runway, but then she aborted.. as we were sitting there for just a bit too long. This time, we did all of our checks before making it to the taxiway, listened to CTAF for awhile, called our departure, and made one smooth transition from they alleyway onto the runway.

Reports are that this fire started on 9/2/2023 when N420PB, a 2003 Cirrus SR-20 went down at 9/3/2023 02:17:39Z (9/2/23 10:17:39) on its 4th touch-and-go. The crash site is just past the clearing at the end of Runway 24 and off to the right (in line with the narrow hangar on the right). Seemingly the fire has spread upwind. This week we install the GHA15 and take it for some test flights. The AGL display isn't as useful as the aural callouts. Lets see what it looks like.
SL-00072: Ignition Module Firmware Update
Переглядів 275Рік тому
If you've previously completed the HIC Module replacement, then you may experience power problems during startup. This is a quick and cheap fix that should only take 30 minutes. Only tools needed were a screw driver, hex wrenches, and hot glue.

Updating the G3X Touch Software
Переглядів 3 тис.Рік тому
In this episode, we show how easy it is to upgrade the G3X Touch software. If you've been following along with the news this month, Garmin initially released v9.12, but recalled it after a couple days due to a potential servo control problem and released v9.10 instead. After a few days, they then released v9.13. Here we're going from 9.12 to 9.13.

well done video. and your audio quality is amazing.
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video and your mom's "wit" :). A little further to the north in NJ as you (Somerset is my closest airport) - haven't flown in 25 years but considering getting back into it as the kids get older. Also considering building an RV-12is with my dad as an ELSA - hence binging RV-12 videos and this led me here. Best Wishes.
I'll pick you up for a ride before it gets cold out!
Fun to watch. Thanks
Thanks Rob, great content, as always
Really enjoyed that. Very informative and encouraging to take on a Class C airport. Thank you
Just a note of caution about the removal of SD cards while G3X units are powered up. The GTN650Xi specifically notes that damage to the navigator may occur if the card is removed while the unit is powered up. This seems to be a Garmin tradition. I inadvertently ejected the database card on my Garmin GNS480 navigator and it shut down, would not reboot, and it cost a thousand dollars to get it repaired by Garmin. Stay safe and only move those cards in and out of the units with the power off.
Hi, dang, I had this problem. AWC issued 11/8/22. First flight 11/9/22. The Garmin ESP tried to pull the stick out of my hands on first patternflight due to faulty ADAHARS. I wasn't sure what was going on. Figured out within first 10 hours that the ADAHARS (AHARS) was faulty and Van's was very good to provide an immediate swap at the front desk. I hangar at 7S9 so just a few minutes away from Aurora. Glad to have that resolved.
There was at least 2 busts that day then, because the one I heard (while transiting the TFR properly, on a squawk code) was an older guy who entered it from the west in Delaware and was intercepted around Georgetown.
love the airplane video inserts. lol
I believe I heard this on guard. the fighter was trying to make contact, around 3:45 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 11. I told my student it's exactly why you check with FSS before flying
I heard this on guard while I was flying Sunday. It was the jet pilot asking if he was on frequency and asked if he saw him to rock his wings. First serious TFR bust I've heard on guard in NJ.
It’s definitely a wonderful experience for the kids like mine! They really enjoyed it. Thank you so much!
wow you're a great guy man kudos for all you did to assist!
Just curious. You have an IFR-certified GTN GPS, two G3X and an IFR-capable autopilot. Why is your airplane placarded against flight into IMC? If you don't have all the other required equipment to fly IFR, then why the (considerable) expense of an IFR-certified GPS?
This is a long answer.. the short version is that the factory-built S-LSA aircraft can fly IFR, but not in IMC. This is due to the manufacturers’ consortium ASTM committee wanting it that way for all S-LSA aircraft. For my homebuilt plane, I wanted it to have an E-LSA airworthiness certificate (better resale value). So it’s an exact replica of the factory-built S-LSA. The placards are the same, the bolts are the same, etc. Once you get the E-LSA certificate, you can change the plane however you wish, as long as it’s still within the LSA category (1320lbs, 2 seats, fixed pitch propeller, low stall speed, 120kt max speed). So in my case, the aircraft has the equipment specified in 91.205(d) (night VFR equipment + radio, gyro, directional gyro, slip-skid, altimeter, clock, rate of turn, nav equipment for the filed route). The AW certificate allows IFR flight if equipped. The placard doesn’t allow it. However, as an experimental, I can simply remove the placard, note it in the logbook, and fly IMC too. Whether that’s smart is debatable.. I’d probably want a second AHARS sensor and a heated pitot tube too if flying through hard IMC. But for popping through clouds in the summertime.. that’d probably be fine. I don’t do that, but I do practice approaches and I’m comfortable flying down to VFR minimums knowing I can go IFR if need be.
Thats the lowest steep turn I have ever seen…… bravo….!
Good flyen you are a pilot
Better then getting your wings clipped! Like me before i new my dad!1982! Took a ride with stanger in exchange for looken after a j5! Was grounded for 2 weeks Kamloops b.c.! Safe program raa and eaa! My freind amlie from lumby is a commercle pilot! Nice ride folks! Know 55 and loved and know how to fly lots of diffrent things with wings! GOD BLESS!
That landing was butter! Awesome video
come for a flight soon!
What does the SB accomplish. Does it move the bottom of the radiator aft? Mine touches on the outboard lower corners like shown in the SB . I hope it relocated the radiator more aft. I can’t trim anything on the cowl where mine touches. At 39 seconds in mine touches the lower corner of the tank.
It does not move it. It only prevents vibration and prolongs the life of it.
Nicely done video. I have no radiators but still fun to watch.
Another great video, Rob! I just completed this SB a few days ago, but I'm sure glad I watched this video as I learned two important things: 1) I didn't notice the light contact between the cut edge on the radiator to the mounting lugs of the oil cooler. Mine mostly clears, but there was one spot that was in contact so I'll need to take the radiator back off and file it down. There is no coolant in mine yet so that won't be too much work. 2) I didn't cut the rubber isolators since I couldn't see the need, but I think you brought up a great point about expanding the isolator to fill the hole better. So I'll go ahead and make that change while the radiator is off, as well. Thanks for sharing your experience! FYI, I also recently followed your advice and video to upgrade the CPU fans, so thanks for that, too.
The music is awful, looping, repetitive 😮😢 I wanted to see and listen to the content as I am considering putting an autopilot in my RV 6 but couldn't stand the background ! 😢. Maybe better nextime
Thank you for posting this excellent video, Rob! I just upgraded the fans in my RV-12iS using your advice.
good content, loose the stupid background music tho
HNY! radiator leak SB.. I heard about an rv12 that blew its hoses on the runway, was it similar to that?
Happy New Year 😃
Nice job. Your mom's personality really comes thru!
"whoa is that normal" "too far away to see all the goodies" 11:15 wow! the corridor with mom!
I love your mom's accent. ... Very cool video. Tks for sharing. Subbed. 👍
"I don't want my pills to wear off" - your mom cracks me up
She is obviously still very anxious
great video, very well dressed for maintenance too.
I would have never figured this out without your video! Thanks!
I suspect that "TP 28" refers to the appropriate tire pressure.
And another small correction: N954B was not built by Boeing employees but rather was built by Van's as an SLSA.
Just a correction to your video. The last plane that you highlighted, N683JT, did indeed win a top award at Oshkosh. It won the EAA Excellence in Craftsmanship for the experimental Light Sport category. It’s listed in the EAA 2023 award winners. (Tiffany Meyers)
Oh I missed it! I was surprised I didn't see it listed anywhere.. that explains it

I'm a retired aircraft painter from NJ. Are there alot of paint shops left? What are they spraying? I mainly used Imron.
I really like the gear leg and wheel pants fairings when they are installed. It makes the bottom look really clean.
Wow… the details in the evoke paint job are amazing. I really like the stabilator tip fairing seam being filled. I’ll add that to my build list with the wingtip filling. Not sure I have the patience to fill every rivet head through 😂 Thanks for the video. I’m still daydreaming of paint schemes for mine. - Jacob
Rewatch tomorrow when YT finishes processing the HD version of the video :). Evoke does great work.. they really do earn the money they charge.
The stabilator tips were filled by the builder himself. Along with homemade fiberglass vertical stab fairing and homemade fiberglass gear leg to wheel pan fairings. All the fiberglass work was completed by the builder prior to being painted by Evoke. (Tiffany Meyers)
Thanks for the demo. I'm in a Legacy RV12 w/ Dynon, so won't have an easy upgrade path, but it looks like a nice addition to the panel! Thx
yeesh, that Cessna at the end ....... good 'ol 3N6 !
Although a cool gadget, still trying to figure out the point of this on a VFR aircraft where your butt is only a couple feet above the wheels that are darn near right below you. If it's "because you can" I totally get that! For me personally, adding more distractions is not good, YMMV. I do appreciate the video, it was fun to watch and I enjoy seeing what other people are messing with! Cheers :)
Seems like a gimmick… i already have my GPS Garmin lady yelling at me “ obstacle ! Pull up! “ at seemingly random occasions when landing at the same airport so yeah, I am good with Garmin ladies …I see no need for another one …
Just installing mine. Great review!
💀💀 I’m back, like an ex girlfriend.😂
Excellent! Can't wait to work on this. This requires G3X v 9.22 correct? Are there any other configuration items besides this that v 9.22 can "unlock"?
I believe it's 9.11 or higher. No reasons not to go to the latest version at this time.
Great tips. Always appreciate the fact that you deliver a lot of information in a short period of time. The detailed tool tips are a nice touch.
@RV12iS flyer, can you provide these RV or do you mean that an other RV is better ( faster )? I think about to change the plane AA5A to RV. Greetings from Germany.
Parking the RV next to the RVs was a nice touch.
