Simple Pattern Drawing for Knitting using the Grid Designer
Really cool program, thanks for sharing.
Glad you like it! Enjoy
So cool that you have created a cloud version! Congratulations!
Is there a way i can set this for Loom knitting?
It would be just like any other knitting project. Grid Designer can do a rectangular pattern for knitting. Just select the knitting type when you create your project and put in your gauge (number of rows/stitches in a measured sample). If you are knitting in the round, it works just like knitting on needles in the round with a flat rectangular pattern.
So happy I came across your website. I was ready to call it quits trying to create a chart for a graphgan as so many other sites just did not work for what I was trying to do. Thank you so much for this tool!!
Thank you, you are very welcome!
This is so awesome thank you very much for your hard work
how do I download grid designer
No download needed. It runs in a browser. Go to www.freese-works.com and click on the grid designer tab.
I think I just found what I was looking for!! Thank you so much for all that you have put into this tool! Can't wait to try it out.
Awesome ! Thank you !
You're welcome!
Can you get your designs back if your cache got cleared ?
No, you can't. But, you can make backups of your designs on your own machine and reload them if your cache gets cleared. Here is the youTube video on import/export to show you how to make a backup and restore. ua-cam.com/video/ggGoafnFMJ4/v-deo.html
In addition, I am working on a login system using AWS. That will store your designs in the cloud and will be more secure and will also allow you to work on the same design from any device.
Awesome on the new cloud thing. But I hate I can’t get my design back. I worked so much on that. Thanks.
I'm sorry that happened to you. You can make the backups, too, for now.
Yea I tried that now and I can’t do that on my iPad which is how I do all my designs.
I was contemplating buying some graph paper - but I have just come across your channel ! No need for the paper now! I will need to study up on the Grid Designer - it looks great! Thanks so much! 😀
Wonderful! Let me know if you have any questions.
Can you graph something for me please 🥰🙏🙏
It would depend upon what you wanted a graph of.
The translation to english that I got was: Hello. Tell me please. Does your program have a text description function? I mean Make your own diagram and text description for this diagram. For C2C. To write, for example, 2 and this number is highlighted in color. Thank you for your reply
I am not sure exactly what you are asking. There is text tool that will create letters and numbers on the grid in different fonts. It's on the right side of the bottom toolbar. When you do a crochet pattern, including C2C, you can get text directions by doing Project > Download. Select options for the printout of the grid and continue on. Then select PDF from the download options and select written instructions for C2C. It will tell you for each diagonal line how many C2C squares to make of each color. Is that what you are asking for perhaps? Otherwise, please explain a little bit more.
Всё правильно вы понимаете. А в XLSX можно сохранять текстовые инструкции?
English translation: You understand everything correctly. Is it possible to save text instructions in XLSX?
No, the text instructions are only written in the PDF. There is an excel output, but it only prints out the color chart and color key. Do you need/want the text in excel?
Thank you so much 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
I am having a problem to get it to go to 24 inch in the size category. Any suggestions?
I would have to look at the image and see exactly what is going on. What the problem is would depend upon whether you are trying to scale up to 24 inches or down to 24 inches. A couple of things come to mind though. If the picture won't enlarge to 24 inches, it could be because the original image my be too low resolution. Look at the size of the image under the image picture on the left to see the number of pixels in the original picture. For instance, if the picture is 200 x 150 on the left, then the grid on the right will not size larger than 200 x 150. The digitizer does not enlarge. If you need a size of grid bigger than the number of pixels in the original picture to get to 24 inches, then that won't work. I doubt this next idea is right, but if the 24 inches calculates to larger than 500 for the grid, then it will scale it down to whatever number of inches the 500 cells would come to. 500 x 500 is max grid size for Grid Designer. You should be able to scale down to 24 inches from anything. You will lose detail in the pattern, but I can't think of a reason why it would prevent you from doing that.
You could send me more info in email. To initiate email click the contact tab at the top of the page on freese-works.com. I'll email you back and you could send me screen shots perhaps of the problem, or send me the image you are looking at and tell me what you goal is in terms of size for the final pattern.
Hi do you create patterns for ppl for a fee?
I don't do it for a "fee", but I do do it for "free". It helps me test out the Grid Designer. I have learned a great deal from making patterns for people. I do not have time this week, as I am trying to get a new release out and a couple videos, but next week I should be able to help you out. You can contact me through my contact page at: www.freese-works.com/contact-us-at-freese-works/ and I'll get back to you with an email.
How to get to dark Vader of comer to comer blanket
Do you mean the bad guy from Star Wars?
@@griddesigner4331 yes
I think that's who you mean. It would be very difficult to get enough detail in a corner to corner blanket, to do a character like. Even if you just focus on the face of the character, the blanket would have to be very large to get enough detail. This is because, the larger the internal blocks or stitches are, the larger the blanket has to be to get enough detail. Also, keep in mind that although you may find pictures of the character on the internet, those pictures will be owned by someone. So, if you do digitize a character like that you would not want to share the pattern with a lot of people. Generally, making one for yourself does not cause a problem. But, you wouldn't want to sell a pattern like that without a contract with the owner of the image material. The bunny in this video is a very simple pattern. It is mostly things like that, that you can do in a small corner-to-corner blanket. If you do single-crochet as the block, you should be able to digitize a character like Vader onto an afghan-sized blanket. I can help you if would like. You can contact me through email by filling out my contact page at freese-works.com/contact-us-at-freese-works. We can discuss more in email.

How do youget thepicture on the grid place
Can you explain more about your question? I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to. If you can refer to specific buttons or a part of the video that you are looking at, that would be helpful for me to understand more.
Sorry I found the delete button. Lol.
No problem. Have a great day!
Is there a way to delete designs when you don’t need them anymore to clear out your saved folder ? Also can you add “I Love This Yarn“ from Hobby Lobby to the palette selection if possible ?
I will add the yarn to the palettes. Thank you for your request! There is a Delete Project and a Delete by List. The Delete Project deletes the currently open project. The Delete by List gives you a list and you can select what you want to delete. Also, you might want to watch this video on import and export. This will talk more about how projects are saved and how to make backups of you projects. What I usually do when I'm done with a project is I export it to a file on my computer, then I delete it from the list. I can then reload it from the file later, with the import function, if I ever want to do it again.
Ooops I forgot to put the link to the import/export video: ua-cam.com/video/ggGoafnFMJ4/v-deo.html
Awesome ! Great idea with the imports/exports. I watched several videos. I will watch this one next. I watched one a few days ago and it showed how to change all the edge colors of a project at one time. It was like a picture of a small mountain and the sky like but I can’t find which one it was now. I wanted to rewatch it. Can you tell me which one that might be ?
It could be this video with the changes for version beta.20? This one starts by showing fonts, but also shows an edge fill tool later. It has a picture of hills and sky.
Yes that’s it. Thanks so much.
Crop Outside the selection seems a little confusing in terminology. It actually crops what’s inside the box right ?
It removes everything in the grid except the selected area. So, effectively, it removes what is outside the box. Cropping to the selection. I maybe should have just called in "Crop".
@@griddesigner4331 oh ok I see what your saying now. Lol. Yea just Crop would probably be better. Lol
Could you maybe make a system with in this for Mosaic Crochet ? It’s like a graphgan pattern.
Yes, I think it would be doable. What I need first is to be able to deal with different stitches for different cells. Right now, everything assumes the same stitch for each cell. So, I need a way to deal with SC, CH, and DC at a minimum to make a mosaic overlay pattern. My next area is to add textures for the stitches. First very simple for what I have so far, but then I think stitches could be marked as chains or overlay dc stitches and with that information I can draw what that would look like. I think it can be done. I am slowly moving in that direction. You are the third person to ask for overlay mosaic crochet design, so it is something that is definitely wanted by multiple people.
Yes it is a very popular crochet technique right now and lots of people would love to make their own charts myself included. There are couple people who have tried to make a mosaic pattern maker but it was very challenging and did not work correctly. And then they just kind of abandoned the whole thing. Hope you can make it work it would be Awesome ! I just found your channel and subscribed and can’t wait to watch more of your videos on this Grid Designer ! Thanks so much for the reply back.
And I LOVE that I can do it on my iPad !!! 💜

how can i dowload my work without the grid lines in the background?
I don't think I have an option for that, but I can add it in the next release. Will be probable a couple of weeks to the next release.
I stumbled upon you and this tool today. I’m shocked it’s not more known. Thank you for your work. Can we sell the grids we make?
Thank you very much! Please pass the word to others. I don't have the resources to advertise much, so it spreads mostly by word-of-mouth. Yes, the designs you make are your own to do with as you want. I just provide the tool for editing. If you post patterns on the internet, I would appreciate a link back to freese-works.com and maybe a few nice words. If you have any questions, just let me know.
Can this be used for cross stitch patterns?
Yes, absolutely! At the point where crochet is selected, just select cross-stitch and then you can select your canvas, sts/inch, etc. For the palette, you may want to select DMC floss or Anchor floss.
Awesome, what about the numbers for the rows on the sides and top?
You can turn numbers on by going to Display > Show Numbering. You can change the way numbering is displayed by going to Display > More Options. When you print, the numbering is always turned on on the printing. Thanks for your interest in the Grid Designer!
@@griddesigner4331 thank you for that because when I added the numbers they were all scrambled and crazy 😂 I’m glad that I can change them.
Interesting. Well, they shouldn't be "scrambled and crazy". Maybe send me a screen shot if you are seeing something odd. They do automatically reduce themselves so that not every row or column has a number, if the numbers can't all be fitted in. This makes sure that the numbers are written large enough to be legible. If you zoom in or out the number of them that can be fitted along each side will change. If you have a positive suggestion for what you would like to see, let me know.
@@griddesigner4331I think I figured it out. I was able to print it. Again, thank you so much I’m gonna give it a go. 😊
Great! Let me know if you have an questions along the way!
your link under this video is not allowing me to log in but it let me login to word press but not from your link. It's not accepting my log in
There is no login to the Grid Designer. It looks like the only link in the description of this video is the link to my main page: www.freese-works.com. That will take you to the main page which provides general information about the Grid Designer. From there, if you want to login to my blog/wordpress, click the Blog tab at the top of the page. Then there will be a login on the right side to login to wordpress. There is no other login. To start Grid Designer from the main page, click the Grid Designer tab at the top.
Take a look at this quick video that provides an introduction to the Grid Designer. This might clear things up more: ua-cam.com/video/m77lWjOpl14/v-deo.html
Your display page is always fuzzy what can I do to have a clear picture to see what your doing?
The videos are done in 1080p. To change the quality setting on the video, move the mouse over the video so the buttons along the bottom come up. Then select the gear icon (Settings). Then select quality and 1080p or 720p to improve the quality on your device.
One other thing to note. If you watch the video immediately after I post it, it may not be processed completely. UA-cam takes a bit to process the 1080p version of the video. So, if you don't see the 1080p option there initially, it indicates that UA-cam is still processing the video.
Thank you@@griddesigner4331
I come from Indonesia and I am very interested in trying to make it. But my English is not good, can I ask you to add subtitles in Indonesian?
Thank you for your interest in the Grid Designer! I looked into this today, and I am able to easily add subtitles in English, as they can be automatically generated from my voice. However, when I try to add subtitles in another language, youTube studio does not support automatic translation to the language when the subtitles are automatically generated. It looks like it might be possible to do if I type in all the subtitles, but that could take a great deal of time. Right now I am in the process of adding new features into the Grid Designer and would need to plan some time in the future for doing this. In general, the videos show the steps I am taking to create something and you may be able to follow along in that way. You may also be able to turn on the English subtitles that I have just enabled and translate portions of the text with a translation website for now.
Gratitude for this gift.

would you mind making a tutorial on how to design a corner to corner crochet project using a coloring page like the cat you did in a different video. I have followed instructions and have tried digitizing a coloring page but when I am digitizing it and setting the size to where I need it to be according to my sample swatch it does not digitize right at all and when I try to fix it I cant get it right so I am so confused. I dont know if I am just not understanding how to size my project or what but I followed instruction on making a swatch and measuring it and my corner to corner swatch was 3.75" by 3.75"
Yes, I can make a video on c2c digitization. That will take a bit to do. Would you send me your image that you are working with and what size you would like the final work to be? I have a C2C digitizer video out: ua-cam.com/video/ntBW2YbYKjU/v-deo.html Note that the image is very simple. With C2C it is difficult to get much detail into the pattern because the block sizes are fairly large compared to something like single-crochet. Hope the video is helpful for you! Let me know if you are still struggling.
is there an option for corner to corner crochet in Grid designer and not just row by row. I am new to graphgans and like the corner to corner better instead of row by row
Yes there is. When you start a new project in Project > New Project, you can select a C2C project type. You can also change an existing project to C2C by going to Display > Cell Size/Type. If you then put your gauge information in, in either place, Grid Designer can calculate the size of your project. You can see the size of your project either from Project > Project Info or Display > Grid Size. You can also change the numbering when you print your project to C2C and it will number from the corner you select, around the entire grid.
I should have also mentioned, you can select C2C when digitizing also. When you are setting up the Grid Size, define units will open a dialog where you can select C2C as your type and type in your gauge.
Thank you for your reply. I am excited to try it.

So after you print out the picture how do you get the picture on the rug canvas?
There is no feature to print onto a canvas. Some commercial rug kits do print on the canvas, some do not and provide a printed sheet. Grid Designer will only provide the printed sheet. I do not know of any service that will print a single chart onto latch-hook canvas, although there may be one out there. After you print your project out, the color key will tell you how many "cells" of each color there are. For latch hook, a "cell" is the same as a single piece of yarn. You would then need to purchase that many pieces of pre-cut yarn for each color, or cut your own yarn to make those pieces. Then, purchase the latch-hook canvas large enough for your project. Sometimes, if your project is large you might have to attach two or more canvas sheets to complete it. I purchase from colorcrazy.com, but there are other places you can go. I have some comments about canvas quality in my blog post about 5-mesh tools: www.freese-works.com/latch-hook-5-mesh-tools-review/ that might be helpful. It depends on what you are planning to do.
Where have you been 😁. I am very excited i found you. Hugs

Question: Can you also select the ‘grayscale’ option under filters (on the left side), in addition to selecting the grays for the color palette? I noticed you didn’t use it. Soon I’ll get the hang of this so I won’t bother you so much!!Thank you in advance. I love your program!!
Yes absolutely you can select the grayscale in addition to the gray palette. In fact here is a mention of that in my blog post for this video: www.freese-works.com/portrait-pillow-graphghans/
You may also find that raising/lowering the brightness and contrast in the picture on the left will help find a good range of grays in the digitized picture.
If you are having problems digitizing a photo, let me know. I may have a few tricks up my sleeve. You can contact me through email by filling out my contact page at: www.freese-works.com/contact-us-at-freese-works/. I never share emails with anyone, you won't get a bunch of spam back, just a conversation with me.
Thank you for your quick response. I will get in touch if I need to.☺️
Another question : how do you add color (red, green, blue, etc.) to the gray/sepia background? I absolutely love your grid designer. Still learning but loving it. 🥰 God bless you. 🙏🏽
Can a written pattern with instructions be done with this grid program? This is exactly what I’ve been looking for with your gray scale & sepia photo program!!❤
Yes, there are written instructions for crochet. When you are happy with your project go to Project > Download. Select PDF. Then, select the type of instructions you want. They will be written in the PDF along with the graph and the color key.
Very well done!! ❤
Thank you!! 😊
Love this !! Wanting to do the same for my 2 nieces bedrooms... is the software you are using free to use ?
Yes, the software is free. It's called Grid Designer and is located at freese-works.com. It runs in the browser for free. I am the author, so if you have any suggestions for new features, let me know! Grid Designer is my retirement project after 30 years as a software developer. Hope you enjoy it!

Hello there I was just wondering how to change the background of a latch hook pattern from yellow to a different color Any help would be appreciated Thank you Teresa
Hi Teresa, If there is already an existing pattern and you want to fill the yellow area with another color, then select the color from the foreground color dropdown on the upper tool bar (towards the left side). Select the color you want from the dropdown. Then click the fill tool on the bottom toolbar (bucket). Then click on the yellow area and it will fill with the selected color.
Another way to do it would be to select the Substitute colors icon on the top toolbar. Just to the right of the foreground and background colors. A dialog will popup up with a list of all the colors used in the pattern. Scroll down the list to the yellow, click on the substitute button. This will popup up a list of colors. Click on the color you want to replace the yellow with. Then click the apply button to update your pattern.
The primary difference between these two methods is that the fill tool will fill only yellow where it is connected to other yellow. The Substitute colors method will replace ALL yellow in the pattern with another color. You can also select an area with the select tool on the bottom left, then go into Substitute colors and when you substitute for the yellow, it will only substitute in the selected area.
