Thank you for visiting my channel and welcome to JPR LeatherWorks
I love leather. I love the smell of it, the way it feels in your hand, the many ways it can be worked, but most of all, the durability of it. Good, quality leather goods last for generations. There are so many products that can be made from leather and I need to keep myself back from making everything. I do all sorts of things for fun, but I try to limit my shop to a few varieties.
On this channel you will find all you need to start Leathercraft, or buy something unique for yourself or gift.

How do you bevel the edges of veg tan leather to get your work admired?
Are you unsure why to bevel edges, or how? Hopefully this will help. Take a normal, cut piece of leather and the edge is flat and square. You can make your projects stand out from others and get noticed by how you treat your edges. That is one of the ways that pros recognize good work.
This is the first in a series of videos that will show you how to shine; well at least to make your edges shine!

Review of Owden Swivel Knife, Modeling spoons and Maul Folks, I have to apologize for all the sniffles in this video, I was fighting off a cold. I'll not subject you to that again. Also, I kept calling the Owden maul a mallet. What can I say? Too much cold medicine, I suppose.
Review of Owden punches and strap cutters.

This is part of a series where I review some leatherworking tools. In this video, I take a look at tools from Owden, specifically their round punches, a striking hammer and a set of strap cutters.

Review of Owden tools
Dont buy from Owden. Poor quality and you cannot return the product because they never answer your mail or provide you with a return address.

I have Owden 20 and 16 ounce tapered mauls. Both are nice and priced right. Use the 20 for flower centers. Rarely use the 16. For beveling and background I use a 14 Barry King tapered. For delicate work I use a 12 tapered from Jhong Jiang. Are four necessary? No but I like the variety.

Just got your video's in my YT feed. Please keep up the good work and keep them coming. I have just recently started leather work to with the aim of augmenting my income, as a pensioner it is really diiffcult in my country to make ends meet. The state pension here is about $ 108 per month, so I am always looking for tools that are reasonably priced. All the tools we can get locally are CCC tools(Cheap Chinesium Crap) thatare absolutley useless. Best wishes and regards from Port Elizabeth South Africa.
Thanks for the encouragement. I have a couple more videos almost ready.
These definitely chip and bend buddy.
I have been using mine very steadily now since June and no problems. I think you have a problem with Owden ;)
I have all of them and they are literally as sharp as a butter knife. They don’t cut at all. The punches are also very dull but are somewhat usable.
The ridges on the maul are for gripping whatever it is that you are hitting.it’s great. Also you can easily tighten the head and handle with a wrench. Btw the handle is not wood. It is stacked leather. Kind of like the higher end Barry king mauls and mallets. Several pieces of vegetable tanned leather stacked on top of each other and carved on a wood turning lathe into the shape of a handle, then sanded, polished and dyed. I do wonder if it is genuine stacked leather or just a veneer that is layered on top of a cheap wood.
Also I think you are using your Japanese leather knife the wrong way up. The bevel is supposed to be facing up, not down.
As I mention in the video, some do use it the way you mention. The real pros I know do not. Either way works, if it accomplishes your goal.
9:30 that is not how you use this haha. This French skiver is for skiving, not beveling the edges. They are incorrect in calling it a beveler but the Chinese usually copy things without knowing what they even are.
I've been using tools like this for years. Yes, I use them for skiving, but this one is too narrow for that. For skiving, you would need a tool with a wider throat. Using it for beveling allows me to adjust the angle of the cut.
@@jprleatherworks1687 they are just fine for skiving edges. Sure, it would take a while to thin down a whole piece of leather but that is not what it is for. It is for skiving the edges before gluing and stitching so the piece isn’t too bulky/thick. You also suive edges for making turned edges/ rolled edges on luxury goods. Other brands make several sizes with 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm. The one owden makes is a 6mm which is the standard size , along with 8mm. The higher you go, the harder it is to skive through the leather. The most efficient size that is easy enough to use while still taking off enough is the 8mm, in my opinion.
Owden is pretty low quality. Their tools are made of cheap steal, their edge bevelers are unevenly shaped, their creasers fall appart when heated due to terrible construction. The only half decent item of theirs is their replaceable tip awl,. Although even that is hard to tighten without pliers.also both diamond blades are the same sized. The worst is the stitch groover. The screw only has one thread that makes it so you can’t screw the grooving blades. A box in completely unimportant. You are purchasing a tool, not a pretty 2 cent box. Also the so called “ebony” wood is just cheap stabilized wood that is dyed black, not real ebony. The look is still decent though. Also its, owden, not auwden. Source: I’ve bought almost every single tool they sell.
Odd that you have bought every single tool they sell if you find them to be of poor quality.
@@jprleatherworks1687 I was just getting in leather craft and decided to buy all the tools I would need all at once. It was a very poor decision, but I don’t regret it as I learned my lesson.
The Pro series grooving tool is really nice too
You were right! I now have all 5 sizes of Owden Bevelers and they really are great. Thank you again.
Glad you like them!
Thanks for the review of this beveler. I have been thinking about buying an Owden. Your input helps!
I think you'll be happy
