How much square feet of leather was used to make this wonderful piece?

I have tried to make this bag twice and have been unsuccessful. I have followed all the steps in the video. When I went to sew on the front panel it did not line up 😢. I guess it was not meant to be.

If you struggle using muslin/fabric to extract the volume, no worries; there are many different ways of doing it. I saw some people using damp papers or duck tape to extract the volume(dress form). Definitely check out those videos & channels; it may be a life saver. I made one with the pattern. It is great. The backpack is great, the video is great, Hollys responses to my questions where helpful, fast and friendly. Though some things to have in mind before starting this project: 1. u need a sharp skiving knife/technique. Not sure which one it is for me, that caused my pain :D for some thinned parts i used already 0,6mm leather so i did not have to thin it out. 2. Punch holes after u cut. definetively (like in the video). It worked out other way round for me, but life would have been a little easier. 3. Piece 5 had to be shortened (which did not made me unsure, because i contacted Holly and she told me it would be fine) 4. Piece 6 is weird. Not sure why its there in that kind of way. 5. Dont use too thick/stiff leather. My Snap Buttons do not work because my leather is too stiff. I used some thicker leather like 2,5 mm which works for most parts. I also used vegtan for the softer leather part, but took one that is milled. I suggest the thickness was rather the problem then the softness. 6. Think about printing out in colour. Is a little easier and for me the only real weakpoint of this pattern. If u print black/white u sometimes cannot differantiate those lines. It isnt a real problem, but it can cost u some minutes to be sure. The pattern could be improved if there were markings on which side which piece connects where. Maybe one could add some scissors or marking to know where to glue the paper together. Allthough not a big deal. Only a few minutes to think about and watch in the video. 7. u dont need a leather sewing machine. i made all that she made with the leather sewing machine by hand. It works and it looks great! For example the flap. I love the look of the thread going round. It adds such a nice touch. Would recommend that. Alltough make sure to think about how u place ur holes regarding the flap. they should be hiding well under the backpiece. 8. Piece 19 & 20 made my stomach hurt. But it works. i found it quite hard to fold them perfectly fitting onto another. There a little care is needed. (which is a result of me using thin leather and not skiving, so there were no real markings for me. But the problem would stay i think if u are not a good skiver) 9. between 19/20 i addedd a liner as Holly recommends in the video. Not needed, but for me really good idea because i had thinner leather in the middle of the pieces then recommended 10. pieces 22/23 were a bit odd. I did it like her but you should also think about making this one out of the stiffer vegtan and edge finish both glued together parts. This is a question of looks and not functionality 11. when folding over the edge of the main body and sewing it: the part where both backpiece and frontpiece connect is tricky. I contacted Holly because i did not understand how it would be made: it does get folded over. it is called "open seam". Google it, you will get it easily. Having stated some "complaints" i would higly recommend this pattern! it is awesome in technique. The result looks so fantastic. Stick with it. It is a lot of work, but it really pays off!
