Transitioning Power Systems to Net Zero
We sit down with Dr Robin Preece, Reader in Future Power Systems within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester and Deputy Director of Supergen Energy Networks Hub.
Dr Preece talks to us about the who, what, how and whys of transitioning our power systems and all the factors that could effect the decisions made.
The Supergen Energy Networks Hub (SEN) is a £9m research project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The hub brings together collaborative teams from Industry, Academia, Government and Civil Society to carry out highly impactful, interdisciplinary research, to enable energy networks to become a driving force towards a rapid, safe and just transition to net zero.

Thank you for the presentation and I found it quite educational. I am new to the Supergen Energy channel and I will have to look at your other videos. Please allow me to make one observation. Basically what you are saying is that given the proper conditions a little old lady by flipping a light switch can crash the whole network. I come into this from the renewable energy side. I am sure you are aware of the increasing amount of solar and batteries being added. I think your mistake is trying to perpetuate a fragile centralized system. Really, all that power generation -large and small- should be doing is charging batteries. Large power plants will become obsolete due to decentralized production. Let the batteries handle the load. Thanks again.

Hi Chris, thanks for watching! I was not at all saying that, though. A potentially dangerous frequency excursion will only happen if there is a large power imbalance, such as a nuclear power plant tripping. Regarding batteries, they are indeed part of the solution for managing frequency in a decarbonized grid. Renewables are not to blame for frequency instability, we have in fact studied 'who should pay for stability'. The Earth is cooler with the atmos/GHGs/albedo not warmer. To perform as advertised the GHGs require “extra” energy upwelling from the surface radiating as a black body. The kinetic heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmos molecules render that scenario impossible. No greenhouse effect, no GHG warming, no man/CO2 driven climate change or Gorebal warming. Great webinar. Does your stats include carbon footprint from the making of materials used? Also, have you overplayed whole life cost or total cost of ownership over this would be fascinating.

the stacking thing shall be removed. All that stuff shall be part of the business logic of the controller, not of the communication protocol. I get the point where the standard needs to allow for offline service provisioning, but this is (IMHO) way out of that scope. Testing the charging profile implementation is a mess, and I am only talking about the software implementation, let alone what the CP will actually do in response to a chargingprofile request.

    1) By reflecting away 30% of ISR the albedo, which would not exist w/o the atmosphere, makes the earth cooler than it would be without the atmosphere like that reflective panel set on the dash. Remove the atmosphere/GHGs and the earth becomes much like the moon, a barren rock with a 0.1 albedo, 20% more kJ/h, hot^3 on the lit side, cold^3 on the dark. Nikolov, Kramm (U of AK) and UCLA Diviner mission all tacitly agree. 2) the GHG up/down welling, “trapping”/”back” radiating/delaying/intercepting, 100 % efficient, perpetual warming loop requires "extra" energy which according to RGHE theory it gets from 3) the terrestrial surface radiating that "extra" energy as a near ideal .95 emissivity black body which 4) it cannot do because of the non-radiative heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmospheric molecules. 1+2+3+4 = 0 Greenhouse Effect + 0 Greenhouse gas warming + 0 man caused climate change. All science backed up by experiment, the gold standard of classical science. www.linkedin.com/posts/nicholas-schroeder-55934820_climatechange-greenhouse-co2-activity-6749812735246254080-bc6K

This is an excellent overview of ISO 15118, including updated detail for the -20 revision. I'm curious how 15118 'capability' is tested and attained by EVSE manufacturers? Without widely-available compliant EVs, what level of compliance constitutes '15118-capable' today? Also, I'd like to know more about the requirements of the on-board charger for grid-code compliance for AC V2G, and to what extent that increases the cost of EVs.
