I think it is the best in its class of that era. I mean book size receivers. The closest competitor was Sony ICF-SW7600GR. But with today's digital technology, it can be beated by receivers like the Qodosen DX-286 on FM. On shortwave, they are about the same, but any digital radio has digital bandwidths, so they have an advantage. By the way, B65 has none, only high and low tone control, but still it's one of my favorites.

Hello. Panasonic radio receivers, especially the RF series, were known for their speaker sound quality. From bigger ones like your mentioned RF-2200 to small ones like the cult RF-B65. By the way, RF-799LBS is 275 x 160 x 58 mm / 10.8 x 6.3 x 2.3 inch, and Sony ICF-2001 is 310 x 171 x 56 mm / 12.2 x 6.7 x 2.2 inch, so it's a little bit smaller. Anyway, I like my Sony ICF-2001 a lot. I have it also in near mint condition in my collection, and sometimes I like to power it up. Also, it has a special ability to use its whip antenna on MW. The technology that came back after 40 years on today's Chinese DSP radio receivers.

What I really miss on this radio is the classic rotary tuning knob on the side. Thought its competitor, Sony ICF-2001, also lacks this feature.

@@HristosTrUK As a single conversion set, I would say good enough, as you would expect from that era Panasonic receiver. It's good on all bands, but with Shortwave there's one drawback: it is limited to specific meter band range, which were actual in the 80s. I mean, you can't go "out off" that limited spectrum. Or, simpler to say, a shortwave band is not continuous. It reaches programmed frequency on that meter band and jumps to another. But still, it's one of my favorites, as I acquired it in nearly mint condition, and the fact that limited numbers were made makes it a little bit special.

Thank you for your question. The fact is that the better the radio is on MW - less noticeable effect. I tried quickly with my CC Radio EP Pro with inductive coupling method and what I noticed as both: antenna and radio has fine tuning of their inside ferrite - sometimes they null each other and the opposite effect is achieved. So you need to play with it and find the right way to use both at the same time. I haven't tried yet with bare wire direct connection. Thought it will not disconnect internal ferrite like on original CC Radio EP.

@@HardcoreDXLithuania Yes, I'm aware that the inductive coupling is not working well on good MW sets ( but what a difference make with weaker radios), but I have no idea how it could be with active antennas with direct connection. I don't think that I could buy the Twin coil ferrite, but I'm considering the Tecsun AN- 48x, especially now, when I have CCRdaio-EP with MW antenna inputs.

Well, it depends. Some stations start, some stations end their broadcasts at certain times. Some even mix or overlap each other.

Yes, today it's a challenge to hear something in English apart China Radio International, VOA or some certain programs. There's few other languages not a problem to me, but yes - MW and internet radio mainly.

Sangean PR-D3 shares same case as CC Radio 2E / 3, but inside components are completely different. I'm in frequent contact with C. Crane stuff and they confirmed that it's two different radios. Anyway, I will get PR-D3L with Longwave included soon.

Did they sort out the dodgy display cable. I had a Roberts R983 ( same case, I'm not sure about the internals) and the display lasted just a couple of weeks, after every repair. By the way, congratulations for the C.Crane. I have the older analogue CCRadio-EP and it sounds amazing, even to my wife (it's another VEF to her 😂).

@@HristosTrUK some radios use same case but inside components differ.

Inside antenna unit there's 20 cm long ferrite bar with double coil method connected to PCB. It is controled with control unit (little box) for main tuning (big wheel) and later with fine tuning (little wheel in the middle). Best method I found so far is connecting it to radio by induction method, with that little ferrite stick from the control unit. You place it somewhere near radios inside ferrite "sweet spot".

I also ordered EP PRO from Amazon US to be shipped to Europe 2 days ago. I really hope that they not gonna somehow screw the things up and it will be the right version with 9 kHz stepping. Should arrive on the 7th of October.

@@HardcoreDXLithuania Don't worry. CCrane put a switch on the back to select either 9 or 10. I have two sets of EBL 10000 mah D cell NiMh for mine.

Thank You for the feedback. In this particular video Deshibo GA-450 Shortwave antenna is used. You can find it sometimes named only GA-450 but it is still the same antenna. Try to find one on Google search. They are not expensive but for the price I think it's very good option if you can't use something outdoors. Also this antenna could be found on sites like AliExpress. Greetings!

Thank you for the question. This particular loop antenna (Deshibo GA-450) is intended to work mainly on Shortwave bands but also can be used for MW. But on MW it's not the best. Also, the radio must have MW antenna socket as most doesn't. If you looking something for MW improvement commercially available I would recommend in the first C. Crane's Twin Coil Ferrite antenna (not available in Europe but can be find on eBay US site) or passive loops like Tecsun AN-100 or Tecsun AN-200 can be used. They are much cheaper and easily available on Chinese sites like AliExpress directly. Also some resellers in Europe offer them with topped price. Both options will improve MW reception as in UK you still have active Medium Wave transmitters so it can sound nearly as good as FM transmissions.

@@HardcoreDXLithuania Thanks for reply. The Cranes antenna sems to be out of stock and/or discontinued. The Tecsun seems to be available and, appears to be a modern take on the little black loop we used to get along with our hi-fis's. I take it the Tecsun would destroy those stock ones?

@@JimHUdson-d9s yes, C. Cranes are no more in production and discontinued but I bought mine in nearly mint condition from eBay US. Fairly good price including shipping and taxes. Those little black hi-fi loops are almost useless. If I would rank top 4 loops commercially available it would be: 1. Super Select-A-Tenna (actually it's active loop, very rare and pricey). 2. Select-A-Tenna. 3. Terk AM Advantage (some people say it's equal to standard Select-A-Tenna, depending on situation). 4 Tecsun AN-100 or AN-200 (same loop different base / stand). P.S. I used Tecsun loop with one of my AM tuners like hi-fi Yamaha T85 and it worked great. I coupled it by induction with tuners stock loop antenna. But it came with proper one as T85 back in 80s was top of the line.

I think ATM, one of the Tecsun ones would work to get back into all this again after not using AM radio receivers for a while. The videos that i have seen of the Tecsun loops, people either had them wired in or, just used ambiently, with little to no difference. Ambiently one would sit on my receiver or, near it easy enough when i get around to setting it all back up again. This hobby could be very expensive if you let it!

It is quite impressive peace of kit available commercialy. There's various connection methods to experiment with and even passive loop can be incorporated as I found with my experiments to get even more gain. Bob Crane (owner of the company) in one of the articles also mentioned about it. He used twin coil ferrite antenna with Select-A-Tenna passive MW loop.

The only thing which is a little bit annoying - PS/2 - DIN6 connectors. But if you keep in mind that this antenna first came around 2000s it is normal at the time.

@@wfermier yes, easily. Loop gives extra signal clarity. But it can be received with telescopic easily as Radio Romania transmitters not far away from my location.
