After sinking my 4runner in. a mudpit, I had a slow start on my 4runner. I replaced the started and it resolved all of the issues! This is a step-by-step on how to replace the starter on a 5th gen 4runner. This is on the OG 5th gen ( 2012) so it could be slightly different on the later models. Do you think the starter would drop through the bottom on a 2wd since it doesn’t have a 4wd diff? Thanks
Dude I literally just got my 2012 4 runner stuck in a river the water was just above my floor boards thanks man hopefully it’s only the starter
I am having the same issue with my 5th gen 2015 after getting it stuck in a waterhole for roughly 30-45 minutes in which water was up to halfway of the door speakers. About a day afterwards my battery began draining overnight. Now i have the battery charged and doesn’t seem to drain but starter just does one loud click. My question is how does the submersion affect the starter or how did you know it was the starter? It was starting for about a week after the water submersion but something was drawing the battery down, now even with fully charged battery it only does one loud click so i an guessing the starter needs replacing.

I have a 2010 and a slow to start too. But I’m talking like 4-5 seconds of crank time before it turns over. I’ve gone through so many forums trying to figure out what it could be. I’ve thought about the starter but not sure. I’ve also thought the fuel pressure regulator but only in the morning does it start immediately. So I don’t think it’s that. Would you have any thoughts or ideas?
Sorry for the late reply, but in my opinion, if the starter is actively turning the engine over for 4-5 seconds, I think the starter is fine, and it could be a fuel issue. But if it takes time for the starter to engage and turn over than it would most likely be electrical or the starter. Fuel could definitely be an issue, but if the starting speed is inconsistent, it sounds electrical. If you haven’t already done this, I would just start by confirming your battery is good, alternator is good and there’s no corrosion or loose connections all the way from the battery to the starter. You could also just pull a fuel line and turn it over to the start position to engage the fuel pump, and just confirm you have a nice steady stream of fuel. Just things to try before spending money on parts. If you are still thinking the regulator then you could get a fuel pressure test kit, I would think harbor freight would sell a cheap one $10-$20 just to see what it’s at, then go from there.
