We can coat the ring land area of the piston, most recently done at the request of an NHRA Pro Stock team. Another application is in "stroker motor" engine platforms. The coating does add more stability to the piston above what the skirt coating alone provides. Coating the top end adds cost as the lands are coated separately from the skirts and require special masking to keep the coating out of the ring grooves. The coating’s “fuzzy” texture is made up of thousands of tiny peaks. As the coating burnishes itself to the ideal fit during the break-in, the peaks that abrade come off in tiny particles. Most of the particles will hang suspended in the oil until the first oil change; larger particles may get trapped by the oil filter. The coating is a proprietary blend of polymers and lubricious filler materials, so the particles also function as a lubricant.

Cylinder bore material has no bearing on the coating selection. Almost all engines with the exception of Top Fuel receive our "Slick+ CC" piston skirt coating. Other factors outlined in the video come into play when it comes to determining the Target Coating Thickness (TCT).

Kyle, there are other videos in our series which may answer your questions in more detail, so we’ll briefly touch on each one here. What is the coating made of? It's a proprietary blend of polymers and lubricious filler materials. The coatings contain no PTFE. Do you have different compounds for different applications and heat ranges? Our coatings cover a broad spectrum of thickness, strength, friction properties and heat ranges, and are designed to perform in a wide range of applications. Does the skirt length affect the effectiveness of the coating? No What is the recommended variation for the coating thickness? This depends upon your specific application. On piston skirts, we like to say that our "sweet spot" is .001" - .004" radial (.002" - .008" diametric), but we can and have applied .015" or more on the diameter of a piston and achieved the desired results. Does the coating debris affect softer metals? No Does this have thermal benefits or drawbacks not related to cylinder friction? Piston rings conduct heat energy from the piston crown to the cylinder wall. While there are thermal benefits due to reduced friction and improved lubrication, APC stabilizes the piston in the bore so that the rings stay in constant contact with the cylinder wall. The improved ring seal allows heat to be transferred more efficiently. Why is figure 4A off center? We’d like to say that we were checking to see if people were paying attention, but the truth is that it just slipped through that way. Why did you cut at the end of a pertinent question? Which question? Are there metals this coating does not adhere to? None that we have worked with yet. The coatings also successfully adhere to PEEK polymer Can these coating be applied with positive results to other pieces such as hydraulic lifters? Pistons, pumps, compressors, turbo/superchargers and bearings all have shown measurable benefits using APC. We've coated lifter bores and solid lifters, but cannot coat hydraulic or roller lifters unless they are fully disassembled so that we’re only working with the lifter body. We recommend completing all of the block work first and then getting the pistons coated. Sometimes things occur during the boring/honing process and the dimensions come out differently from what was planned. We cannot coat over cured coating, so if the pistons need to be resized to fit then they would need to be stripped and recoated at the cost of doing a second job.

I think Camcoat in the UK does this coating or a similar product

We are currently bringing on our first international licensee in Australia, and have been in discussions with others for the European market.

@@danielmintern4070 According to their website, Camcoat applies Tech Line coating products. While they are good for their intended use, they cannot achieve the dimensional build-up (.015" or more) that our patented, proprietary Abradable Powder Coatings are able to offer.

Yes, all engines can benefit from our coatings. We've coated pistons for use in engines ranging from chainsaws to Top Fuel Funny Cars, and that includes a lot of higher power street builds. Customers freshening up their engines after one season or many are amazed at how good the coating still looks. You can find many examples on our Facebook page.

Absolutely. Our coatings have been used in engines participating in Drag Week, and many higher power street/strip builds that are used as a daily driver and then taken to the track on the weekend.

We have coated solid lifters and tappets to take up excess clearance. We cannot coat hydraulic or roller lifters unless they are completely disassembled so that we are only working with the lifter body.

We can add and have added .015" and more to the diameter of a piston without any issues.

+nFlames2 - we have applied our Abradable Powder Coatings™ to heavily scored pistons and it has worked very well. It won't fill in the scored areas entirely, but since we can apply up to .015" diametric thickness (.0075" per side) it will definitely help the piston fit tight in the bore again.
