2022 Toyota Tacoma Engine Vacuum Pump Noise
2022 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6 4X4 2GR-FKS 6,155 miles.
Documenting this for warranty purposes.
Also may help others hearing the same noise.
The engine has been making clattering noise since day 1. It's not the typical sewing machine noise made by the direct injection pump nor the injectors rapid fire in "cleaning" mode noise.
The metallic "clatter" is coming from the vacuum pump on the back of the firewall on the passenger side. Right behind the circular high pressure direct injection pump. The sole purposed of the pump is to supplied vacuum for the brake booster. For some reason it is making noise at idle.
Tacomas without the factory crawl control will have the vacuum pump.
Direct Injection pump "tick" followed by vacuum pump "clatter" @ 0:55
TSB-0115-22
Update.
The noise from the vacuum pump is deemed "normal". TSB with a new pump states noise is "reduced" So the "clattering" sound is still there. It is a wear item according to Toyota and will have to be replace around 120,000 miles. Just keep an eye on it folks.

This little truck has been sold The truck has been sitting thru out the winter months. Decided to start her up. Not as cold here in VA, around low 30s. These Weber carbs are cold nature and needs to be fully warmed up for drivability. Same set up as the last video. Added LCE Performance wire holder, a Filter King fuel pressure regulator and general engine bay clean up. #Toyota #Hilux #20R #22R ...
1980 Toyota Pickup 20R Engine Idle

A quick video of my engine running smoothly after a new carb and ignition overhaul. 1980 Toyota pickup long bed. 5 speed (W50) transmission. Stock top/bottom end 20R engine. • Weber 32/36 carburetor w/electric choke • Trans-dapt 1 piece mount #2120 • Weber fuel pressure regulator #1035043 • Fuel pressure T #2019127 • Aeromotive fuel gauge #2019123 • LCE Performance EGR block off #1016009 • LCE ...
My 2023 Toyota Tacoma started with this noise at about 8,000 miles. It currently has about 12,700 miles. The sound is very loud when the engine warms up. When the engine is cold the noise is not present. I have changed the oil regularly; every 3,000 miles.
Atkinson engine cycle normal sound. Look it up. Less fuel at idle. Higher rpm no claps.
Muy bonito carrro

Just had to have my vacuum pump replaced on my new 23 Tacoma TRD sport with 470 miles on it. It’s normal for the pumps to be noisy but mine sounded like a bad valve and extremely loud. Still noisy after replacement, but way quieter than before
Did you end up getting a new vacuum pump? Did the noise go away?
Hola me paré hermoso el carro yo voy poco a poco restaurando el mío tiene un motor 20r y espero arreglarlo y mejorarlo ya que el carro es de mi padre y quiero poner más hermoso el carro que tengo para mi padre
Does anyone know if this was an issue with the Lexus GX 460? I have almost the same sound on mine and the other day all the brake warning lights came on. ABS, Low brake power etc. Car only has 48,000miles on it. Its with Lexus now. Interested to see what they find.
Any updates ??? On this sounds clattering ???
Sounds just like a camshaft bearing or rocker arms going bad.
Nice video, I never noticed the noise until recently. I just made an appointment for my 2019 with 38k for this.
How’d it go? I have the same noise.
I have same noise but quits after a few seconds
I'm hearing this weird noise on my toyota out of nowhere. I am gonna schedule an appointment at the dealership. How did it go for u?
Not sure if you’ll see this but is it idling at 2PSI and if so has that affected driving at all? My original fuel pump only puts out around 2 and I can’t seem to get it to run as well as yours sounds. Everyone keeps telling me I need 2.5 to 3 psi. Just don’t wanna remove the old Pump if not necessary
I sold the truck. Going off memory here. I think the Weber only requires a minimum of 3 psi to run. The pressure can go up with rpm increase. I would check your stock fuel pump and pressure regulator to see what psi they're putting out and go from there. Sometimes the weber carb itself is hard to fine tune. Once you get it right, it runs very well. Good luck.
Did you figure out the noise on the 2022 Tacoma video ?????
It's the vacuum pump. "Normal" noise according to Toyota.
What did you use to block off coolant lines that ran to the old carb(for the choke)?
Sold the truck. If I remember correctly, it was a part off the LCE Performance block off kit.
@@drippysworkshop4905 thanks, I just got mine delivered yesterday. Excited to get the truck moving again!
That’s normal on these because they have port injection and direct injections
You are correct. You can most certainly hear the direct injection pump/injectors "tick". But the "clattering sound is not normal and is coming from the vacuum pump itself. Way too loud to be normal, unless this is "Toyota normal"
@@drippysworkshop4905 your right it is just little to loud and if I were you I would take it to the dealer to look at it
My 2018 sounds exactly like that for 4 years already it’s normal.
Your 2018 has crawl control? This an a wear item according to Toyota and need to be replace every 124k miles. I wouldn't be so quick to accept "normal" I've seen the swiper arm inside broken on other vehicles with similar style vacuum pumps.
Thanks for the video I have a 23 that makes the same noise, though it is quieter and mostly noticeable when I let off on the throttle and can hear the clattering. Does yours behave like that as well?
Smooth running.
She's purring! 🐈 👌
Whered you get that spark plug wire bracket ?
how much mpg's?
Hey what’s up, i am trying to install ac to my 1980 toyota pickup. Can you make a video of how the installation has to be?
I actually sold the truck. I believe it has AC from the factory. Sorry I can't be of help.
@@drippysworkshop4905 no worries, next time 👍🏻✌🏻🤜🏻
Bonita y el color hermoso saludos🇭🇳🇭🇳🇭🇳🇭🇳🇭🇳
Wao very nice
Nice vedio...
I just purchased a 1980 toyota heritage. It has a 20r engine with only 30k miles on it 🙂 but the cabover rv part needs lots of work. It also has the double rear axles 😲
Why do you have 2 fuel filters?
What wire did you use for the rpm gauge getting one in soon!
I don't have the truck anymore. I think I used tapped into the black wire from the existing coil on the engine harness. Hope that helps.
Where u get the fuel regulator
Ebay
What kind of horse power are you getting out of it ?
Can't wait till mine is this beautiful
can i drive it to richmond if bought?
baddass yoda man! cleaner then shit
I have crown vic wheels on mine too perfect 👌
Nice truck sounds good too
Nice ride! .. where did you get the front valance lip from ?
Ebay! Off a Mk1 Golf Gti
Looks great I’m gonna try some of these mods in the one I’m working with ::) I see the hose from the top of the engine going to the oil catch can but where’s the other hose going out of the catch go to?
Thanks! The hose on top of the valve cover is the pcv valve leading into the can. The hose then exit out of the can into the intake manifold port right between the Weber carb and the valve cover. Can't quite see it but the nipple is there. Helps with the blow by. Works great.
@@drippysworkshop4905 Nice thanks 🙏

The pocket watch is dope. Throw back to old school racing. I've been thinking of doing that. I want to find a good altimeter and stop watch to go with it.
It's a cheap Amazon special with a sticky backing. It just so happen to fit the spare circular blank on the dash. It would be nice to wire in a clock from the later model pickups. For now this will do lol.
I love the crown vic wheels. They look great. Really clean engine as well. Beautiful truck.
Thanks!
Where did you get your tach from? I like where you’ve got it. Love those wheels too
Thanks. Tach is from Advance Auto. Bosch sport II 2-5/8"
@@drippysworkshop4905 thanks. My ‘78 20r is slowly approaching where yours is lol
No problem. Mine has slowly turning into a project truck. So I'm not sure which direction I'm going with it yet. Probably lower it some more.
@@drippysworkshop4905 well I like where yours is sitting. Mine’s on 3” front and rear. Definitely doesn’t feel low enough though
Yes, mine is the same set up as yours. I now have Monroe air shocks for work truck duties. I may have to swap them out for shorter shocks. And post up a video! I like to see it!
Plans to sell it?
Not as of now. Just a project truck to tinker with.
That’s a big distributor love it
How hard is that dui install
Straight forward. Install it as you would an OEM unit. One wire +12v to factory ignition hot and one for tach.
@@drippysworkshop4905 unfortunately can’t get it in California might go 6al instead
Questions have Toyota pick up 1979 20r engine can’t pass ca smog check have Holley carburetor two barrels with k&n air cleaner can I bypass manifold exhaust some where else instead of through the air cleaner
I'm not sure of CA smog laws as I do not have that in my state. As far as your exhaust routing, do you mean your EGR set up? That can be eliminated with block of plates made by LCE Performance. That or you meant your smog pump? That can be remove also but I'm unsure of your setup and what parts you have installed/removed or not. Hope that helps.
I would say it’s exempt because of the age being a 79 but it is California I guess the smog referee will tell you
Fired right up! 🤙🏽

Love the truck! What part of VA are you in?
Thanks! Southwest!
@@drippysworkshop4905 awesome! I’m in Roanoke
Que tipo de inicion es eso?
Performancedistributors.com D.U.I distributor
Sounds amazing! I love how clean the engine bay is 🍻 Subscribed!!
Do the headers cause the clutch fluid line to heat up?
Not sure. I have stock header with oe heat shield on right now. I heat wrap some of the hoses to prevent heat soak to the carb.
I have the pacesetter header wrapped in heatwrap and I haven’t noticed any issues with the clutch line heating up.
How is it running so damn smooth lol
New carb and ignition system does wonders.
@@drippysworkshop4905 what kind of ignition? Is the distributer bigger or am i tripping??
Aftermarket ignition system. It's a modified GM ignition from D.U.I Performance.
