This tutorial is about how to create gravity fed irrigation systems without plastic pipes or pumps. You can distribute surface water across the landscape as it rains moving water from gullies into dry areas. This method is based on the Keyline irrigation methods pioneered in the 1950s by Ken Yeomans Senior.

Patterns
Переглядів 13911 місяців тому
Permaculture Design uses patterns. We create systems that use natural energies, like the remnant forests nearby. Because the forest wastes nothing. And the forest creates no pollution. Naturally, it turns wastes into resources. Nature has reliable patterns that collect, store, and transfer resources. Permaculture designs use these 8 basic patterns. By getting to know the patterns and what they ...
Integration

In this video we will explore the design tool called integration or 'relationships of elements'. In Nature, there is a complex web of relationships. We can copy this in our designs by creating useful connections between the components. David Holmgren summarized this as integrating rather than segregating. In this video we analyse some components, determine which outputs can become useful inputs...

The Creative Edge Queer/Permaculture I glimpse the creativity in the project you are mapping out. “Culturez” take up residence within us, some become internalised Cultural Imperialist forces, we become recruited to serve the interests of the imperialists, in recent times Toxic Patriarchy, Slavery. We have these “foreign bodies” within us. “MonoCulturez” actively inhabiting us, leading to the hibernation of Authentic Self. “What People want”….now there’s a topic…there’s a challenge Why is Permaculture “incredible”? So, the “Culture of Permaculture”, the “Culture of Queer” How do we actively populate our “inner spaces” in ways that shed a mindful light on what forms “what People want”… the discovery of what toxic externalised influences threaten to entrap us as agents of vested interest Cultural Imperialism Permaculture might not save the world, but there is an Aesthetic embedded within Permaculture, an Art as much as a science. I think we might need to explore what the Jungian Cultural tradition also has to add, with its preoccupation with Unconscious, Inner Worlds and exploration of Inner Change, the interplay between Inner World and the External World of Relationships and the Physical World. Can we have more on “Queer Culture” as you construe it Great work Peter

Sure enough, just like you mention in South Africa, we don't eat Australian foods in Australia (well, except macadamias - the only Australian food to make it into the mainstream so far). We disparage it, call it "bush tucker", and eat our tomatoes, lettuces and cucumbers that we brought here with us.

Hi Barnaby, I have noticed that humans use straight lines whenever we are in a hurry, just as nature does - for example straight lines form when high speed explosions occur from volcanos. Humans today use straight lines because the tools we have developed work efficiently in straight lines, when an action is on repeat and is at speed and a force that can overcome other forces (such as resistance of soil to the plough, or resistance of the wind on a car) - the combination of speed, strength and determination gets us designing and implementing in straight lines. only when we observe, listen and work with nature instead of against it, that we learn to accommodate nature.

  • @barnabyvonrudal1

Very interesting. Why do you think humans have started using straight lines and right angles so much (predominantly) then?

"the future of permaculture is in our hands" is a notion I feel very passionate about. I had a chance to teach a so-called PDC a few years ago where I set the standard curriculum aside and instead guided an inquiry like a kimd of wayfaring into permaculture's original impulse and questions (and even to the degree of pondering together with the class on just what these questions might have been).. the point was to remain keenly aware of the harms of an indoctrinating kind of pedagogy.. and so not to deliver or quibble over historical facts, or "permaculture" as a sort of artifact, but instead to regenerate new possibility from such questions as: how may it be possible for humanity to live peacefully and enduringly within Earth's limits while developing its/our potential? Is the mechanistic worldview capable of dealing with such questions? Is living systems thinking and eco-literacy a gateway from which to step out of the mechanistic worldview? How would it be for a design approach to work with the complex beauty of life? What are the personal and collective capabilities that such a concept may require? What are the methods by which we can enter such a realm of inquiry? .. so it all sounds quite wordy here in type, but having conversations around these questions and others in plain language together reveal profound opportunities and allow for all to learn and create their own concept of permaculture. Then when we come around to look more closely at Holmgren and Mollison's kick at the can we can already know this stuff from within and then meaningfully participate in permaculture's development.

This study of Permaculture Design can be a useful framework. To understand any system we will, at some time, need to identify and focus on some of the elements within. To be curious, to be observant and to care are powerful forces that help us overcome our ignorance. We will be confident to blindly set up a system that can to evolve. And we develop a lifestyle that is more sustainable and harmonious. To create a second-rate permaculture design is better than living by default.

Enjoyable conversation, important to hear your perspective Stuart.. so that we don't end up throwing the ecology baby (the discipline) out with the bathwater.. I say this in regard to Henri Bortoft's concern about that superficial study of ecology and 'systems dynamics' and such (ie: with an unchecked mechanistic ontology) that studies fragments and 'counterfeit wholes' and confuses its maps for the territory.

Another consideration in the design of the site is to incorporate ways to prevent leaching of nutrients. Growing food in large vessels sunk into the ground to keep them cool, helps manage the nutrient loss. Many people traditional methods include a base layer that is gleyed. I have experienced the power of gleying. Gleying occurs on our site when the manure from fowls was compacted by their feet then fermented naturally. It helped seal a sunken area and retain nutrients.
