Refreshing to find a channel that doesn’t consider every new pedal “amazing” or “game changing”. Honest reviews are few and far between.
Thanks, we pride ourselves on honest reviews and opinions!
this is really sweet you guys....thank you for all the kind words and i appreciate what you are doing here....glad you enjoyed the show.
Thank you Tom! I actually ran into you at Gruhns earlier that day, I didn’t want to keep you long knowing you had the show a little later. We just want to support musicians/music we believe in while encouraging our fellow musicians. Thanks for sending a comment in and all you do!
I own both a tube Princeton and the tone master Princeton. I like the tone master a lot in isolation. Its beautiful sounding...but, when I had them both side by side in the room, the tube version felt better in almost every way. So the lesson for me, is don't compare the 2. Just keep them apart and enjoy them or use them in a wet dry config, so they perform different duties. The tone master makes a brilliant wet amp, due to the hifi nature of it.
Great to hear your experience! They can have different applications at time but both great choices! Thanks for adding to the conversation!
Worst new product roll out I've ever seen. I get supply issues, but zero pricing info or even a good set of demos is pure trash.
For such an iconic brand and to be honest a great looking product the release and lack of info is confusing!
Instead of swapping P.U.'s, try to make a guitar with adjustable distance between the bridge and the P.U. (I would call it, a movable P.U.). The toan is in the overtoans. Change the distance, and it records different one's. Specifically a bridge P.U. will benefit from being adjustable. You sound like you use freedom units. Let's say 1/4" of movement would be enough. No need to swap/buy expensive P.U.'s (not enough change in toan to justify the cost). $0.02
Adjusting the height and angle of the pickups is a huge thing people forget to test and play with for sure!
@@tonebros6533 I meant distance between bridge and p.u., not p.u. and strings...
First I’ll say the guitar that stays in tune first - over the sound - any day for me. The reason I say that is even a $500,000 Gibson Les Paul won’t sound good if it’s out of tune. Also, I’ve had that same issue myself in the past, the way I solved that tuning issue was getting a guitar with an evertune. There was a lot of stigma about how they were hard to use and all that, but they are so simple, it’s not even funny. Fast-forward to now I have four of them. They literally will never ever go out of tune no matter what. You can let the guitar sit for two years and pick it up and it will still be perfectly in tune. It’s crazy. Only problem is they cost about $300-400 more since that’s the cost of the bridge, but it’s well worth it for any gigging guitar player to have at least one in their arsenal. Also to dispel one of the main myths, you can indeed bend with them and it’s no different than bending on any other guitar. In fact I actually like bending on them easier because they’re smoother Bends - it just doesn’t go out of tune. Another option is to get a compensated nut for your guitar that won’t stay in tune (unless it’s just that the nut slot needs some cleanup and lubrication or some graphite). Also can be string trees or binding at the saddle too sometimes. Good luck with the gig either way 👍
We haven’t had our hands on a evertune yet. We have heard like you said once they have the right setup they do fine with bends. That’s a great call to have in the toolbox!!
@@tonebros6533 yeah they’re actually easier to setup and use than headless guitars - if you have any of those. Those are a pain lol
When the guitar sounds the same. Yes. I went with P90s and the guitar was a brand new guitar because of the change
You can turn off the cab sim (ir) and run it into the FX return of an amp. I run mine into an EHX magnum 44.
That’s a great option for using backline amps or like you do send it to a power amp!
When im not happy with the tone.
I change mine every other Thursday on odd months, whereas on even months I wait for the 1st day after a full moon.
Don’t forget to factor in the leap years. 😂
@@tonebros6533 ah, crap. You’re right. My efforts for the past 10 years are now down the drain. Moving on I’ll keep it simple by just changing them quarterly while alternating between Mayan and Persian calendars each year.
I've heard that the magnets gradually lose their magnetism. Is this a reason to change your pickups?
This is a thing that can happen. However, it takes a long time to happen (40-50 year old pickups normally) or they have to be in specific environments. If it’s a valuable pickup and/or guitar, the magnet can actually be re-magnetized then reinstalled. But if it’s a pickup and/or a guitar without significant value to you then changing the pickups makes more sense.
Gibson es125: 3000 cad in good shape, no more gibson production of laminated archtop, genuine 50s p90 for that price. IMO a no brainer (if you're into archtop and if you can live without a cutaway at least for this guitar).
Absolutely!
Tone king ironman is by far the best attenuator on the market for tone preservation.
The Ironman we haven’t had side by side with others but, we have heard they are great. They should be in the discussion for sure!
i ordered the 2 notes one, after testing 30 minutes i packed it and shipped it back. yuck i dont get it
We are curious. What were you hoping to use it for specifically and did you go with a different option for what you wanted?
@@tonebros6533 was hoping to basically use my princeton reverb without the cab. hated the sound, lost patience very quickly. went back to micing the cab ^^
Makes sense. Hard to beat a good amp with the right mic!
Hard freaking PASS!!
The picture you guys showed was for the 699$ epi Firebird
That’s what they are talking about
I like the concept of the show, keep it up guys!
Thanks! We will have new episodes each week! The new full episode is each Monday then the rest of the week we release short form segments from the weekly show for anyone that likes the short form.
I like my THR5, it sounds good, has a headphone jack. It's small and even has a handle on it. I keep it in the office.
Good to hear you like it! It’s one I have been looking at so I will put a point on the score board for it. Thanks!
There is also a bluetooth version.
I personally love my Joyo Jam Buddy. It is affordable, super small, sounds pretty good for its size and purpose, it’s rechargeable, and has Bluetooth so you can play with songs/videos/stuff from your phone. Sounds pretty decent for such a small amp/device. You can use it with headphones or through the smaller speakers. I even use mine with a pedal into it too. So it covers all of my travel bases. I’ve tried the ones where you plug into your jack, and they’re okay, but I personally like the Jam Buddy.
Thanks Dan! I haven’t looked into the Jam Buddy but sounds like I need to!
These amps may not be the best of the best but they are versatile and great for touring. I know plenty of bands that have left their vintage JMPs and 800s safely at home in place of these. As good as they sound. I did sound for an American band (The Bled?). First guitarist to line check had a DSL - all good. Then the other guitarist did the same with an 800 (likely a reissue) and the two were barely comparable. There’s levels. I know I’m contradicting myself here but as an owner of a 1977 master lead 2203, I’d be happy to take out a DSL as a primary as the old girl isn’t much more reliable! 😂
Some of those mid 70’s 2203 are great amps! For someone like you that needs something to take out to a gig a jcm 2000 or even a current DSL makes a lot of sense.
At this point it’s hard to find a type of pedal that’s underrated since pretty much everyone knows about everything now, but as far as specific models there’s a lot of really great harmonic pedals that make the guitar seeing that flew under the radar into obscurity. My Fuchs plush valve job is a cool tube pedal that sounds great for that tube amp feel. Also the Komet amps KODA pedal. I’m always chasing the “dumble” sound, and those two really hit the mark. Also pretty much _every_ pedal missing link Audio makes is extremely underrated. I didn’t even know they existed as a company until recently and they have a pedal called the super natural that literally nails the Santana sound in one pedal
The Fuchs Vale Job is a GREAT pedal!!! We haven’t checked out Missing Link Audio, sounds like a brand to give a shot. Thanks another insightful and thoughtful addition to the conversation Dan!
@@tonebros6533 no problem! 👍💪 Glad to share! Just for reference I’m actually not swayed by a lot of the new pedals popping up every day, so I don’t recommend those ones lightly. But then again, everyone has their own taste so one person’s “holy grail” could be another’s “meh” lol
Earthquaker plumes. From experience. It's like klon/sd1/odr1 The eq and grit sounds super natural
Tubescreamer for people who don't like Tubescreamers
That’s a great one that should be in this conversation. The Earthquaker Dispatch Master should be too
The most under rated pedals are online from manufacturers that don't pay GearTube. THUS, GearTube never hears about them.
Yeah I find that’s the case a lot. A lot of my favorite pedals just fell under the radar from 10+ years ago. A lot different than the current “release day” video wave that happens now
Ce is also a bolt on neck with a core type carve compared to set neck of an s2
That is something we failed to mention. Thanks for bringing it up!
These amps were known to spend more time in repair shops then on stage.
Since releasing this video we have been heard this from a few people. I was unaware of any issues with them.
@@tonebros6533 I was going to grab one a few years ago and an amp repair guy I knew told me about them. They sound great though and I think the issue was addressed on the newer models.
For recording it's awesome. I wouldn't use it for gigging. Honestly the speakers and mics allows for insane amount of tones. My only complaint is the v30 doesn't sound as good as my cab but I think that's probably because marshall uses a special version that's suppose to mimic the orignal v30s. I've seen them used for as low as $700
You’re right, we completely understand its place for recording. I find it interesting that you’re not as big of a fan of the V30’s in the OX as your own cab. Good to know!
@@tonebros6533 the v30 is usable but I use other options mostly greenbacks.
JCM 2000s have a bias drift issue that needs to be checked before you gig them
That is a great bit of advice and info!! Thank you for that!!
The early versions had a conductive PC board issue.
Awesome review! Your perspective helps a lot in making a choice. 🎸👏"
So happy to hear this! That is one of our goals, help guitarists find what they want/need to get them back to making music! Don’t forget to check in each Monday for new full episodes!
@@tonebros6533 Glad to hear that! 🎶 I’ll make sure to catch the new episodes each Monday. Looking forward to more great content! 🚀
Fractal does have a sound soda's most digital. Think of it like you put a evl12 magnet on your current speaker.
Dude yes. If youve spent hours on the line 6 helix, you realize strymon algorithms arent that great..or lime 6 is that good... If there wasnt loads of parameters id say fractals mix is just high. That their algorithms arent special either.
if that guy actually thinks DSL mean Digital and TSL means tube then find a partner that's not a dummy.
There is only one huge knob in this video!
Terrible
Metal Zone is the most underrated pedal.
I think this should be a show in the future because most people would be surprised what a metal zone could do. It’s become such a joke in the guitar community but it can do ton of things!
Gibson is a joke.
Some of the decisions they make just leave most scratching their heads unfortunately.
I agree! I play a Blues Jr (tweed with the Jensen speaker) because of those reasons. I play rockabilly, surf, blues, and R&B. I used to play a Twin, which was too loud for just about everything. The Blues Jr is loud enough for most gigs, and larger gigs you are mic'd anyway. And I can practice at home with it also.
It’s such a great amp for so many applications. Not saying it should be your only amp but, it is hard to beat in most cases! Thanks for adding to the conversation
Darn good thing you didn't let us hear it.
Pass. even the big box model has never sounded good

Each Monday we release a full length episodes then Tuesday-Friday we release shorter clips from that weeks episode for anyone that doesn’t want or have the time for a full episode. Thanks again for helping us hitting that 100 mark!
A lot of my favorite pedals end up being in the 199-250 range which is kind of a bummer because I wish they were a little less. I think the most expensive pedal I’ve ever got was the punchline beach boys pedal from JHS, but I kind of look at that as four pedals in one - a nice compressor, a nice drive, a great super reverb amp sim, and a nice EQ. But that one hurt when I pulled the trigger on it 😳 I also recently got the Horizon clarity compressor which was $199 and I feel that should have been a $150. It’s only $199 because they’re calling it a “limited edition” but apparently it’s been “limited edition” for like a year now lol. But it sounds great so I can’t complain over the extra $50.
Dan, we are right there with you on this subject. The Punchline isn’t a cheap pedal but it’s much more than a single pedal and to us justifies its price. Also, I do find it odd when someone claims something to be “limited release” then goes on to sell it for a year or make it the new standard version.
Well... good luck out there. At least you're trying... But talking about tone is way less interesting than actually hearing the tone. Lots of competition out there... gotta make your stuff vital and valid. Just sayin'... Rock On...!
Thanks! We understand our channel might not be for everyone however, we are not interested in being another demo channel in the sea of demo channels. We hope to be a unique channel of two passionate musicians that cover guitar gear and general music subjects for guitarists.
I like the Princeton Tone Master - it's very close, sound wise, to the tube version. It's great for small spaces with the attenuator & it's a breeze to move around. I don't add many pedals to it though, I have other amps for that.
That makes sense completely. We have been very impressed by all the Tone Master amps we have played! They make sense for so many scenarios!
Just subscribed, great stuff, watched a few gas or pass and just watching first ep now. Hi from Australia, get em yeew
Awesome! As you will see as you watch more episodes we are constantly working on improving things. We are happy to welcome you to the Tone Bros all the way from Australia! Please add to the conversations through the comments when you feel so inclined because, this show is meant to be a place for open and fun conversations for guitar players.
I have used it with my 68 reissue custom pro reverb. However, I run it about 115v. Just takes the edge off. ON my 60s and 70s fenders I run it about 109-112. My wall voltage is about 122-125. So it makes a diff on protecting vintage amps.
That’s great to hear. Thanks for the info!
I have two. One runs my early 70s Pro Reverb and Dlx Reverb and one runs my 64 Vibroverb and Concert. Works great.
Have you tried them on any of the modern reissues? We see one in our horizon soon!
I was lucky to get a solo boost it's on my board. Mythos pedals is opening a high-end boutique guitar store next month.
Glad you snagged a Solo Boost they look like a great pedal. We had not heard about the Mythos guitar store, that’s intriguing and we will have to check out then report back!
I mean, if you love everything about a guitar except x and y then mod it. But if you are buying a guitar and the neck shape, or fret size, something major, then buy a new guitar. If you buy it, love it, but you're not jiving with the pickups, or maybe you want to add locking tuners, then mod it. I have multiple Les Pauls that i modded, new pickups, new locking tuners, new locking tailpiece and studs. Not major upgrades, but these changes brought guitars that i already loved to another level and made me love them even more.
I like this line of thinking when it comes to Modding a guitar. Sometime I have a guitar that I like and consider modding something however, I know if I do mod it I will be opening a can of worms so I choose to not mod it unless it’s not doing something I am looking for.
