I am a fairly new pilot (5 years) and my first airplane is a #Kitfox. Flying is a lifelong dream for me and I love sharing the adventure of flight with others. My other passion is woodworking. I build custom furniture and provide woodworking classes at www.hardinwood.com.
Oregon Coast Airport Tour
I decided to tour the Oregon Coastal airports to escape the heat in the Willamette Valley. Temperature was about 70 on the ground near the coast but in the air (1,500 feet) it was 83-89 degrees, so a temperature inversion. I flew to Siletz, Pacific City, Nehalum Bay and Seaside Airports. I plan to return to Nehalum Bay for some airplane camping. I really liked Pacific City due to its proximity to the Ocean and town.

In June 2024 my friend Chuck and I left the Kitfox factory fly-in and flew to Johnson Creek, Idaho, for some airplane camping. This is my second time and Chuck's first. A truly spectacular place to fly to. Put it on your bucket list.
Kitfox Factory Fly-In 2024 with Backcountry Tour

In June 2024 my friend Chuck and I flew to Homedale Idaho for the Kitfox Factory Fly-In. We toured the factory, viewed various presentations, ate great food provided by the McBeans and Company, and talked to a lot of Kitfox Pilots. The highlight of the fly-in was a backcountry tour by John McBean with a flight of 24 Kitfox. It all worked out and there were no incidents. Idaho is beautiful!!

Flying in Beautiful Oregon

We moved to Albany Oregon in the summer of 2023. We are now closer to my wife's family and escaping the Sacramento heat. We are enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery, and I was lucky to find a hanger for sale in Lebanon. Haven't done much flying due to the move, working on the new house and typical northwest weather. We are 30 minutes flight from the ocean.

I have been very busy this year moving to Oregon and have not flown a lot, so I figured I would post some previous video from 2021. Now that I am settled in, I will look for some good Oregon Winter days to shoot some more vids. Missing my son, he is now away at college.

Cool little plane wish I would have learned to fly when I was young and had the chance. Back in the late 70's when I was stationed at BAFB could have learned for about $1,500.00 at the base aero club.
@@MichaelBurke-f2p I obtained my license at 61. So, never too late buddy!
Im 61 and thinking really hard about getting mine. @@GeorgeHardin
@@gregwatruba4541 Just do it. Time for new challenges, right? Flying up in the air gives you freedom and thrills like you have never had before. You will never regret it!!
You left out the part where you have to drain the fuel tanks before folding. Altogether, I think the folding and unfolding time is a lot closer to 45 minutes than 10.
I have never drained fuel tanks. When folding, tail is place on rolling stand, so I dont have any overflow problems, even with full tanks.
The beauty of Flight……….
@@blackhorse2947 Why I make these videos. Earth is so beautiful when your flying.
@@GeorgeHardin I got my license in early 1970 flying a Cessna 150 & 172. Just flew for pleasure and my greatest thrill was flying up to Oshkosh each August. Take my supplies, throw a tarp over the wing and camp out. Greetings from OKC…. Michael
My God man you can land that plane on an ALLIGATOR & Take off very impressive George 👏 👍
Rumbear aka Chuck... just watched again and just know that Siskel & Ebert would give it two thumbs up!!! (if they were around!)
This happened because your throttle is set up incorrectly. The Rotax manual clearly states that the idle must be set with the throttle against the hard stop in the cockpit for exactly this reason. The stops on the carbs are only for a backup and should be set .02” of an inch from touching when the throttle is against its own idle stop in the cockpit. If you don’t fix your throttle setup issue this will keep happening.
I adjusted the throttle a few days later and this has not happened since.
What took you so long?
I wish I had the guts to fly it looks like so much fun, but I’m terrified of heights
I am afraid of heights too. Fell 40 ft once and broke a lot of bones. But I have confronted my fears and don't let them stop me from enjoying flying.
Takeoff runs is that short!!!?😮😮
Lookup Steve Henry for short takeoffs!
Well that's going to be a nice smooth flight😅
Why are you taking off from the taxi way?
He cause he can?
My friends held my struts so I could get to the taxi way. I didnt want them on the runway. No one was flying in or out.
Wow so was that about a 300' take off? I counted 3 marker lights and you where up
My normal takeoff is 300'. My friends on the ground estimated 30-50'.
Nice video George! I like seeing that nose wheel hovering in the landing flare!
Thanks Chuck! That gorilla tape hack on the elevator gap works great!!
Great trip George! Really enjoyed exploring and finding new places on this trip!
Thanks Chuck! It was great flying with you. Here's to more flying adventures.
Yes, great video and good choice of music, thanks 👍
Great video George!! Wonderful trip!
Thanks Chuck! You had a cameo!! Next one is JC!
Damn, that thing has a pretty good climb rate!😲
I just came back from a Kitfox fly-in and compared to similar Kitfox's, it did pretty good in the climb department. 100 HP at 734lbs empty makes it a good performer.
You American chaps just do not know how lucky you are. In Tasmania, Johnson Creek is world famous. Hahahahaha
This video shows the beauty of powered flight and one must go aloft to actually experience the uniqueness. This video takes us to that rarefied realm.🙏🙏🙏
That is exactly why I do these videos. Flying is like no other experience.
@@GeorgeHardin thanks, and I'll subscribe 🙂
Wow, you are very brave to construct your own airplane and make all the necessary modifications to improve the instrumentation! It was great meeting you for the first time at the Reunion in Springfield, Virginia. Please let me know if you are ever in my area (York, PA) and hope you can stop by for a visit.
I didn't build the airplane, bought it from the original builder who did an excellent job. I am a woodworker, so I wanted to update the panel with wood and new avionics.
Well it looks like any modifications that you completed just made the plane much more air worthy and current with today's technologies! @@GeorgeHardin
Glad to hear you're doing well, George. I was in the B group of CTC IV-88 and remember the incident where you were hurt. We all felt extremely bad that you couldn't finish with the class. it's hard to believe that 1988 was that long ago. Looking back, the time at the academy was some of my fondest memories. A bunch of great people!
Hi Hamid, thanks for the comment. Yes, it was hard watching you guys graduate! I ended up working for the state for 25 years and retired in 2014. If you watch my newer videos you will see that I obtained my pilots license and do a lot of flying. I still communicate with members of our class. Hope you had a good career and retired in one piece!
They don't teach you the correct way to spell 'hangar" until the advanced stages.
Glad you made it Home Safe! love the scenery! I have some friends in Junction City...looking for reason to fly north!
Thanks Chuck! I was pretty nervous that day.
Great video! Thought your son was going skydiving there for a minute! ;-)
He loves to get the good shot! He is a Film Production Major at Monterey CSU
Stunning shots!
Thanks. We just moved here a year ago. Love Oregon!
Pure pleasure flying, used to do the same with my wife in my cub.
Flying is SO MUCH FUN! Sold my motorcycle 10 years ago and flying is way more fun.
Gorgeous ❤
Thanks!! We live in a beautiful area.
Just drop me off here with an axe
With an axe and an IPA!
Be honest bet you love flying over Oregon 😊
I loved California but Oregon has some pretty spectacular scenery too!
Nicely done George! The plane looks good. Dan Billingsley
Thanks Dan. Has been a great airplane. Right at 600 hrs. Heading to Truckee from Oregon tomorrow. Another 8 hrs of flying.
@@GeorgeHardin Sounds like fun...keep the videos going, I enjoy seeing them.
I drive threw there everyday winds have increased drastically the past 2 yrs if you look to your left you can see my house😂
Thanks Daniel! I will look next time!
Nice Vid, You Should Come To Cottage Grove Again And Meet Me One Day! That Would Be Amazing!
I will give you a heads up when I go back to Cottage Grove. Love the town and the airport!
Let me know if you need some pointers on the software. There is a learning curve. Yes I've been thinking about the Johnson Creek trip.
Great seeing the area! Finally got my Insta 360 mounted up. Video is in editing. Miss flying with ya down here. Idaho calls....
I have building a camper van, a full time project. That is why you haven't heard from me regarding Idaho.
It's always fascinating watching your flights and the awesome camera work. nice landing CAPTAIN.Congradulations on the move praying for many to get out of California It's not easy uprooting everything and starting over but in the long run you will ask yourself why didn't I do it sooner 😊❤
Thanks Daniel! I love the area we lived in California, it was an outdoor paradise. But it was just getting too hot and crowded and we needed to downsize our housing since our son just left for college. Whereabouts are you living right now?
@GeorgeHardin still in yakima Washington been here 22yrs
Congratulations on the move. Moving is always tough. Looking forward to new adventures from your new airport.
Thanks! I hope to do more flying since I didn't fly to much in the last year.
Awesome! It looks like a great design!
I think so too! A really fun airplane to fly.
So you didn't even get to graduate after your accident?
After 2 years recuperation and 4 surgeries on my arm I tried to return to finish the academy, and the commissioner wouldn't let me. They did offer me a job in their Telecom Department, at half what I would have made as a new officer, which I did accept. I ended up doing Telecom and IT work for the state and retired after 25 years. But driving a desk was not the same thing as driving a Black and White. I did not get a disability retirement because I wasn't sworn yet. Sometimes life deals bad cards, so you just have to play the cards your delt. I have had a good life and as you can see in other videos, I am now enjoying my new passion flying.
Looking good George! We been hammered. KPVF closed because of snow.... they don't have a plow! Otherwise the rain has been almost nonstop! Hangar temp today was in the 40's. Maybe some flying in late May/June?? Alvord desert appears enticing?? Be well.
I believe I saw one that fit into a enclosed trailer! Really cool man
Nice work, George ! Charles M. would be impressed !
Thanks Rick! I think some of the wood may have come from Charlie.
Czech engineering. 🇨🇿 You're welcome. 😊
Loving the vids! I enjoyed talking aviation with you last weekend.
Thanks G! Maybe we can go up in the Kitfox sometime.
Kitfoxes are so nice. Can't wait till mine flies. Sacramento has nice areas to fly around it .
A very fun airplane! Going to start posting Oregon flights this summer. Good luck with your Kitfox.
i knew this secret was still a buzz, thks man.
Nice video George! I look forward to some shots from Oregon!!
Thanks Rumbear! I got lucky and bought a hanger in Lebanon. It is a fixer upper, but it doesnt leak.
Hello George - what a great video! Thank you very much for sharing and respect for your flying skills. One question: What kind of camera are you using on your left wing? How do you adjust the angle while flying? Thanks and Cheers from Germany
Hello Max! Danke schon! Ich habe in Deutschland 2 jahre gewohnen in Ansbach in 1983-1985. Deutschland gefahlt mir! I use the Insta360 OneX on a selfie stick attached to my wing strut. It shoots in 360, then you use the software afterwards to adjust the point of view. I connect an external battery to the camera and turn it on before I fly. Ich will urlaub machen in Deutschland 2023.✈️
@@GeorgeHardin Fabulous! Looks like a very handy camera. I assume you have been to Ansbach during your army time? Actually I have been to Ansbach and Grafenwöhr when I was in the Bundeswehr (when I was 18 it was still compusory). Let me know when you come to Germany - happy to help in case you want to go flying or need any advice.
Yes, I was in an Artillery Battalion and spent a lot of time in Grafenwohr! Our Unit formed an association to remember our unit. I built the website our association at www.28fara.org. I will contact you when I come there. Schuss!
Oh my! Killing the engine on short final might technically be a dead stick landing but it’s not really. It’s actually not the smartest thing to do in the world anyway. Many of us practice landings at idle power or close to idle power routinely. But we start somewhere in the airport traffic pattern and pull the engine idle. Those of us flying large six-cylinder engines, O-470 s and up should not make a long idle traffic pattern Windmilling those engines is not good
I asked afterwards if I had to pay extra for that lesson! Unbeknownst to both of us, if you pull the throttle hard enough on a Rotax, there is enough "give" in the system to kill the motor. I have since adjusted the idle stops. He did a good job of landing.
So cool George! Didn’t think I would come across one of your videos! I am seriously considering getting my PPL and if possible building my own airplane!
Thanks Cameron, give me a call sometime and we'll talk about some different strategies for getting your PPL.
I'm from Brazil and watch some of your videos. Congratulations! Your footage is excellent. What camera do you use to rotate and shoot footage with this quality?
Hi Ricardo, I use the Insta360 OneX mounted on a selfie stick, connected to a backup battery. With 360 cameras, you shoot the video and then change the video afterwards using the software. Great camera, and it is amazing all the things you can do with this camera.
