In this video, Dennis talks about Core-Satellite Portfolio building strategy for Big Investment Wins.
The Core-Satellite portfolio strategy combines a stable foundation with dynamic opportunities, with the Core making up 70 to 90% of the portfolio and consisting of broad, low-cost index funds or ETFs. The satellites are smaller, more focused investments that allow for strategic bets without putting the entire portfolio at risk. This strategy offers diversification, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. The Bogleheads 3-Fund portfolio can be used to build the Core, offering exposure to three major asset classes through just three funds, embracing simplicity and efficiency with broad diversification and low fees. The satellites, making up 10 to 30% of the portfolio, can include individual stocks, thematic ETFs, and alternative assets, allowing for pursuing higher returns without derailing the overall portfolio.
The video discusses the concept of core-satellite portfolio building, where 80% of the portfolio is allocated to core investments and 20% to satellite investments. It provides a practical example of allocating a $100,000 portfolio, with specific stock and ETF allocations for core and satellite investments. It also discusses adding $1,000 per month to the portfolio and managing the portfolio through regular rebalancing and performance monitoring, aiming to achieve consistent growth and financial independence.

My primary concern with ETFs is their lack of optimization. A significant drop in any single stock within an ETF can pull down the entire portfolio. That said, ETF or not, I don't see the stock market slowing down anytime soon, and I'm considering investing around $60k. However, I’m not entirely confident in my skills just yet.

I've seen over 45% growth in my portfolio this year, but my Financial Advisor has recommended that we diversify moving forward. It’s clear that a rising market doesn’t always signal a healthy economy, but we might as well capitalize on the current momentum while it lasts.

I'm 55 years old with very little set aside for retirement at this point. I have always been curious about the market and have witnessed people who played the game right and retired early. Some claimed they started very small, but their portfolio grew over time. I do have a significant amount but I’m unsure about which strategies or approach to take in order to achieve good returns. I'm open-minded and would appreciate any help or guidance

I was once in your position. I started investing earlier this year,,, with a start of 30k. I made my first 100k USD last month. Today, I have a decent $260K nest egg. The right investments will change your life. I should retire soon as long as things remain this good. My only regret is not starting earlier.

Such uncertainties are the reasons I don’t base my judgement on a ''heresay''. My dollar portfolio is made up of 30% S&P500, 25% Index funds(ETFs),15% Gold and over 30% in digital assets, thanks to my CFA for this accurate asset allocation. This strategy is what works for my spouse and I. We've made over 80% capital growth minus dividends.

1 am retiring next year but the thought of retirement gives me weakness. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you never imagined to happen. It’s so difficult for people who are retired and have no savings or loved ones to fall back on.

True, It has never been easier to understand how to build your money after retirement than it is right now with the inflation, when you may study and experience a completely variegated market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor. The impacts of the U.S. dollar's gain or fall on investments in my opinion are complex.

A couple of years ago, I sold my buy-to-lets and invested in Bitcoin and XRP. The profits have been insane, and I’ll never go back to property investing. Dividends from SCHD are typically taxed at the qualified dividend rate, which is often lower than regular income tax rates for many investors. Meanwhile, Nvidia continues to be a major market driver, contributing significantly to the recent gains in the S&P 500. With its stock up over 90% this year, Nvidia rose another 2.5% on Monday, helping push the Nasdaq 100 to a record high. I’m actively looking for companies to add to my $350K portfolio to boost its performance. Any suggestions are welcome!

Diversification is how you limit your overall returns and imo is the biggest detriment to why people don't make money in the stock market. I always called it diwsorsification. The best strategy to optimize returns is to buy the companies that have the ecosystem to create a moat that competition can't beat at very low valuations with sold gross margins. It doesn't really matter if the company is making money yet but more that they are going to be a top player in the future and have enough cash to survive over the long run. That will beat every single system that is out there and over time you will become diversified waiting for the next sector to crash as you also out perform everyone in the stock market. Back in 2015 I was buying bitcoin and ethereum after crypto crash. After covid lock downs I was buying up best oil companies with very high yields. Right now I am buying best companies in china. You buy up china blue chip companies hold long term your going to out perform everyone over the next 10 years. There is more risk investing this way over especially in the short term but if you don't want that risk just put your money into a high interest rate savings account and collect 4 to 5% interest on your money over a index fund imo its much safer investment. I an buying tencent, alibaba, baidu, pdd etc and still accumulating at way cheaper valuations then few years ago when people were going crazy on chinese stocks. It is just waiting patiently for a sector to crash and gobbling up the best companies. But keep the stocks and never sell. Once in awhile a investment goes bad for me but not very often. The top companies always find a way to solve the problems and turn their business back around long term.

As an investment enthusiast, I often wonder how top-level investors are able to become millionaires through investing. I have a significant amount of capital to start with, but I'm unsure about the strategies and direction I should take to help me generate substantial profits like some people are this season

I’m not in a position to offer financial advice, but given the significant amount of capital you're working with, it would be wise to consult a financial advisor who can guide you in developing a strategy tailored to your goals and risk tolerance. The truth is, the role of an investment advisor can often be overlooked but should never be underestimated. After facing a significant portfolio loss in 2020 during the COVID pandemic while trying to manage my investments on my own, I decided to reach out to an investment advisor. At that time, I had about $126K left in my portfolio. Now, without having to lift a finger, I'm semi-retired, working only 7.5 hours a week, and I'm just 15% short of my $1 million retirement goal thanks to my subsequent investments

Don't simply retire from something; have something to retire to. Start saving, keep saving, and stick to investments. Building wealth involves establishing routines, like consistently setting aside funds at regular intervals for smart investments

It’s really heartbreaking to see how inflation and recession impact low-income families. The cost of living keeps rising, and many struggle just to meet basic needs, let alone save or invest. It’s a reminder of the importance of finding ways to create financial opportunities. You've helped me a lot sir Robert! Imagine i invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days

Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got talking about investment and money. I started investing with $120k and in the first 2 months , my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and gets more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.

I’ve been forced to find additional sources of income as I got retrenched. I barely have time to continue trading and watch my investments since I had my second daughter. Do you think I should take a break for a while from the market and focus on other things or return whenever I have free time or is it a continuous process? Thanks..

There's some good information here, but the title is misleading. What is the plan? From what I gathered, the plan is to buy the recommended investments and get a 4% yield, although he never shows that it would produce a 4% yield. Nor did he say how much to put in each, how much to put in other investments like growth stocks, bonds, etc. I would not call this a plan.

  • @ericj9011

Emerging markets, cool. Presumably avoiding China, so I assume something like EMXC is good, although he was kind of vague on this point.

Thanks for the video. The notion of "timing the market" needs to be better defined and explained. Though Buffett is against "timing", he occasionally buys more stock of companies he likes in the low, and sells stock of those he dislikes in the high. In my case, I typically wait for a mini correction (like the one on 12/18/24) to deploy my monthly investment allowance. It works well. (PS: please note, I did fire a financial advisor who was keeping 50% of my portfolio in cash "waiting for a crash" for 2 years - that was an egregious bad strategy!!). Overall, I think it's a bit dumb to buy or sell irrespective of such fluctuations. Thoughts? Thanks.

Awesome insights. If you can, would like your thoughts on my investing plan for next 10years, S&P 500 as foundational - 50%, Nasdaq100 for growth - 30%, dividend large cap value (SCHD) - 10% and small cap value (avuv) - 10%. Picked small cap value as active fund as it’s not too expensive and seems to be a good fund.

Nice. My two cents. I'd reduce small cap and add international (ETFs like IEFA or big stocks like TSM, ASML). Also, consider short-term bond ETFs for a bit more diversification (though bonds have sucked over the last decade...)
