ITT: people who think that a horror game has to be backed by creepy ambient spoopy shit that's generic AF due to overuse, and shouldn't ever consider the game's environment, setting, and vibe, and then choose music that fits the game's unique makeup.
Ohh I spend my childhood with this game, at night in the dark, omg I was both scared and exited, but I still kept playing it, now I play System Shock 1 Remake (2023) and we absolutely need System Shock 2 Remake!
I distinctly remember when this played on one of the levels & it fit perfectly with just how confused I was trying to get through the level. Good times, honestly.
This is the perfect theme for this level because you spend most of it on a pretty vicious recurring time limit. The feeling of overwhelm and also running is perfect

I never looked at system shock as a horror game but one that implements elements of it. For the most part, to me, the game is about the struggle and the fight for survival. Not the spookys that infest the station.
It started when bug players like pendulum, hallucinator, etc switched to the more modern dubstep ( which sucks ). Classic drum and bass mix is a good place to find old but gold pieces.
I always considered the music of SS1 and 2 to intensify the fact that you are trapped in a place controlled by something greater than you, and it is CONSTANTLY looking for you :)
i think there's so many horror games that paint into the genre with silence dripping with tension that we often don't take into consideration horror that stands in the backdrop of total disorder, panic, and noise this song has a melody (which, those synths totally give a feeling of mystery and slight unease btw) and rhythm, but the loud dnb drums can invoke this rapid, panicked movement that doesn't have time to stop and think (like how the engineering deck forces you to move through it quickly bc of the radiation leakages). in that rushing pool of panic and noise, there's a mutated henchman shuffling at the other end of the hall. his mind's been hijacked and only his simpler brain functions are running. he's big, strong, violent, and hard to kill; the sight of him heightens your fear and makes your stomach drop he sees you he's walking towards you whether you manage to kill him or you run away, you're deep into this labyrinth of maintenance corridors and it's in your mind now that another one of these things could be roaming in them with you. it might not have that large contrast between quiet build-ups and loud scares, but it definitely leaves you terrified and in dread/anticipation amongst the hissing pipes and the ringing alarms and the kickass dnb
I just love so much the contrast between the eerie atmosphere that creeps you the fuck out and then all of the sudden you get in the mazes on engineering, you use a speed hypo thing and starts running at light speed with 90s acid drum and bass at max volume while getting irradiated.. this game truly is an experience of its own
System Shock 2 would be really scary if I wasn't too busy jamming.
