Schuyler Quentel Set: 1 Year Review
In this video, I give a follow up review on the Quentel series, explaining that it has really worked well for me. My only substantive complaint is that the edition of the Second London Baptist Confession that they include has errors in it.

Owen Volumes: Banner vs. Crossway
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
In this very amateur video, I give a one-handed comparison between the new Crossway edition of the John Owen works and the older Banner of Truth edition.
Schuyler Quentel for Pastoral Ministry
Переглядів 572 роки тому
In this video, I compare the Schuyler Quentel to my trusty Allan NCR and explain how I intend to use all three Quentels for the different tasks of pastoral ministry. Perhaps in a years time I can provide an updated version. This review wasn’t meant to be super professional (which is probably obvious), but just a basic explanation that may help others
SBTS Position Paper Instruction

In this video, I walk through the process of writing the systematic theology position paper for SBTS. This is my own advice and should not be taken to represent the expectations of every professor/teaching assistant. Check with your own Professor/OTA/Garrett Fellow for specific instructions.

Thank you SO much for this!! Been going back and forth. I know Banner runs sales now and again and so it would totally be worth it to grab their set for the historical and wide-spread reference to the works at $280 or whatever the sale price is at the time. But to then collect the Crossway edition to actually read and use them because they are clearly MUCH better presented and readable. I’m just having a hard time getting my head around 40 volumes!! Will easily take them 10-20 years to produce the whole set.

Agree! I'm using the "What do you want for Christmas/Birthday/Fathers Day" question to build the Crossway set

If you don't mind me asking, has the English been modernized at all with these volumes similar to how crossway did with The Attribute's Of God set?

Is it fair to say that Crossway has the American English spelling but Banner likely has the British English spelling, which would edge me towards choosing Banner…

That's correct. This is what they say in the Preface for the Works: "For that reason, we have returned again to the original editions of Owen’s texts to ensure the accuracy of their presentation here but have conformed the spelling to modern American standards, modernized older verb endings, reduced the use of italics where they do not clarify meaning, updated some hyphenation forms, modernized capitalization both for select terms in the text and for titles of Owen’s works, refreshed the typesetting, set lengthy quotations in block format, and both checked and added Scripture references in a consistent format where necessary. His marginal notes and footnotes have been clearly marked in footnotes as his (with “-Owen” appearing at the end of his content) to distinguish them from editorial comments. Foreign languages such as Greek, Hebrew, and Latin (which Owen knew and used extensively) have been translated into modern English, with the original languages retained in footnotes for scholarly reference (also followed by “-Owen”). If Goold omitted parts of the original text in his edition, we have restored them to their rightful place. Additionally, we have attempted to regularize the numbering system Owen employed, which was often imprecise and inconsistent; our order is 1, (1), [1], {1}, and 1st. We have also included various features to aid readers’ comprehension of Owen’s writings, including extensive introductions and outlines by established scholars in the field today, new paragraph breaks marked by a pilcrow (¶), chapter titles and appropriate headings (either entirely new or adapted from Goold), and explanatory footnotes that define archaic or obscure words and point out scriptural and other allusions in the text. On the rare occasions when we have added words to the text for readability, we have clearly marked them using square brackets. Having a team of experts involved, along with the benefit of modern online database technology, has also enabled us to make the prodigious effort to identify sources and citations in Owen that Russell and Goold deliberately avoided or were unable to locate for their editions."

Thank you for sharing. I like your thinking on using the bibles together. I have one Schuyler and several Allan bibles. They don’t tie in. I understand what you mean about the text being where you remember it 😊

I once met a retired pastor who had bought and used the same identical Bible just so he could make his notations in one and preach and teach from the other. The Cambridge set (Clarion, Wide Margin, Pit Minion) was my other option, but the Schuyler has larger text, which I've appreciated.

I wanted to start reading Owen and Crossway’s collection looked fantastic but then I was able to buy all 23 Banner volumes, plus more for $200. Needless to say, I’m sticking with Banner haha. Thanks for the comparison!

Where did you buy 23 volumes for 200$?!?

Crossway's renumbering the volumes would be frustrating for those who have grown accustomed to the Banner edition, which just retains the content the way the 19th Century Goolud edition organizes it.

You’re right about that, and that’s my only hesitancy about it (though I have Owen on Logos, which will eliminate citation issues). I do appreciate Crossway’s organization of the works more though

Thank you for the comparison. I have the first volume of Hebrews from Banner of Truth. I just recently found out about the Crossway series. I think I'd rather get the Crossway series, because it does seem more readable than the Banner of Truth series.

It would be hard for me to decide between them, but I think the fact that the Crossway edition is more readable makes it more appealing to me. I think the citation issues are the main thing that will create issues between the two editions (so many books today refer to the Banner edition already)
