I love this discussion so much and whole-heartedly agree. It saddens me however that in reading her book Chicken Little the Sky Isnt Falling, Erica believes that kids can choose their own gender. The fact that she perpetuates this lie takes away from her credibility.

New subscriber and at 29 weeks pregnant, I’ve been really starting to think about these labor and delivery/postpartum boundaries. My husband’s family can be very pushy (easily offended) and it makes me nervous to tell them that I want one to two weeks of time with just my son and husband bonding together as we enter this new phase of life. It’s already been a tough pregnancy, we are remodeling our house in time for the baby’s arrival, so it’s not been an easy transition into getting ready, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and all I want is to have a peaceful time where nobody bothers us while we live blissfully just the 3 of us getting to know one another. ❤ Thankfully, my husband has been really supportive throughout the whole thing and is good with whatever I’m comfortable with and will tell his family to respect our boundaries we set together. Thank you for sharing your experiences! It was very helpful to hear what you did with your kids and be able to be so candid about your thoughts. Definitely will be binge listening to more of your content!!! ❤

At university years ago I was having a deep intellectual conversation one time with a female classmate and somewhere in the conversation she asked me : "What do you desire most for your life?" To which I answered: "Well id love to find a good husband and have a family and be a stay at home mom". Her response: "Oh sweety, that's nice and everything but you're too smart for that- don't sell yourself short". Her response left me speechless not because I agreed but because I wholeheartedly disagreed with her premise that somehow my desire was "me selling myself short" or me doing something that's below my intellect. I just stayed quiet the rest of the convo until we parted ways but how she responded to me always stuck with me. If I could respond to her now id say: "maybe its BECAUSE I'm smart- that I prioritize the way that I do".

29:28 - Just curious if you have any thoughts on the TDAP vaccine? I’m 38 weeks pregnant and opted out of the TDAP awhile ago due to an anaphylactic reaction to the Covid vaccine (which I was forced to get or I’d lose my job. Still regret it). The docs have a way of making me second-guess this decision. Just want to know if there’s any other moms who didn’t get it and their baby is okay? 😅

Yes, and it’s totally ok. I’m a feminist who doesn’t hate men, who all so supports women to make their own life decisions. It’s not black or white or shades of gray. It’s just messy life. It will happen any way. Better in a safe healthy way.

CIO is neurologically damaging - SAY IT LOUDER FOR PEOPLE IN THE BACK!! Also it is absolutely criminal that women in America are expected to go back to work so early after birth. In Canada, we have 1-1.5 years of (poorly...) paid leave, but at least it allows women to care for their children. Absolutely abhorrent to separate new moms from their babies.

I could not ever allow my baby to cry and not respond immediately, it is so cruel. My father told me I held my baby too much and that I needed to put him down... NO. Also, our holistic pediatrition told me that I needed to separate myself from my newborn baby, what a crazy lady.

There are lots of positives discussed here and I enjoyed hearing your opinions. However, I don’t like how black and white you are making parenting and motherhood seem. It is not black and white - it’s not just wonderful and fulfilling and it’s also not just difficult. It’s BOTH! And both are okay. And I also think you are missing a piece - society. I don’t think you can discuss modern parenting without discussing our social and economic structures. You compare us to women in India who bring their children to work! I’m sure many of us would love to do that! In the US, there are very few public places that are welcoming to children - it’s difficult to bring your child to target much less to work with you. I feel that you are putting lots of onus on the mother and failing to recognize all the pieces at play. Modern motherhood is more complex because we have to create our own support structures.

I have been "too smart" to have allowed myself into the groove of HAVING TO WORK and mothering at the same time. I have a masters university degree, and have worked prior to starting family, but once I knew I was going to have babies, no job prospect seemed remotly interesting. All was agreed with my husband, we did it all alone, him providing, and me, homemaking. As we both live away from our families, so there was no help available. I could never contemplated the thought of strangers raising my children, influencibg their thoughts and perhaps instilling their stupid ways or behaviours inro the minds of my boys. We are non believers, have no religious agenda whatsoever, both educated, and I never felt bullied into thinking that careers matter more than family life. I am 47 and both my boys are nearly adults now.

I also would tell people sometime in whatever month I was due. My mother-in-law was not happy anytime she asked for a specific date with my second and I just kept saying"mid to late January". My EDD was January 18th and she ended up coming on 10th. I was so happy I kept saying mid to late January because no one was bothering me around that time about if I had given birth yet. When I was working for my first, my boss kept asking when I was giving birth. Like he wanted an actual day, not just the estimated due date. I told him I was due late March and since there was no current plan for an induction or planned c-section, I couldn't give him an actual day because my baby was the only one who knew it! She was born on the last day of March.

You are in school to learn english math and real science history and geography. Feel free to ignore all the rest. If it sounds like BS it probably is. By the way, we just changed to an amazing charter school that teaches classical education. lots of math reading and zero BS. If you can't homeschool, search for classical education.

@34:01 It's difficult to believe her, "It's so sad comment" it sounded extremely inauthentic. I get the feeling that the woman on the far left is actually very devoted to her children and the woman on the far right only had Erica on the podcast because it would improve her ratings. It's only a theory, but I wonder.. I think some people make comments about women who have a lot of children, because they understand the reality, that if you have too many children, they are going to need to start taking care of each other, and it is NOT a child's job to take care of their siblings, it is their mother's & fathers job!

Trust this: 4 things in the world need to change to bring back the motherly instincts. 1. Remove the anti natalist theology indirectly put through the mind( carrer first or you became a sl*ve of pat*arc-y) 2. acknowledging the boy crisis.(Increasingly man are failing ;its designed that way from the 60s; need a Specific ministry to address their issue) 3. Empowering Fathers+ Mothers 4. Egalitarianism doesn't work in child rearing( sometimes its 70-30 or 45-55). It requires sacrifice.

My first baby is a nicu baby, so my first experiences of motherhood were not holding him whenever i wanted and not being around him all the time... i feel that that has impacted me. I was so angry when we finally brought him home, and so depressed. How do i begin to even out as a mom, to feel that unending nurturing feeling? Im just so tired and i love him so much, but the bonding has taken longer for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation! As a first time mom myself, and pregnant with another one on the way, this really spoke to me. It validates all the instincts I've been feelings, like picking up my crying baby (now 1 and a half) to soothe, and being shamed for not passing the baby around at our big in-law's family functions. Now I know I can truly trust my instincts with my kids, and stand on confident ground when I say "no" or "not right now." Thank you ladies !! I have two daughters… first was an unplanned pregnancy at 17 and then our second daughter was an unplanned (birth control baby) when I was 22. I met my now hubby when I was as 13 turning 14. We were living together before we became pregnant. When things were great financially and we were out of college we tried for 9 years to have a baby. Nada, zip, zilch! Had we not of had a teenage or early twenty uh-oh baby, chances are we’d never of have had one. While it was a struggle we still have great memories! Now we have one grandchild. A little girl who is our world! We are lucky enough to be able to watch her full time right now! Seeing your baby as a parent is pure bliss!!! Loved this episode and the realness of it! Also, thanks for bringing up dad’s caring and staying with the kids is NOT babysitting… it’s parenting!!!

I’m a mom of 4 kids under 6 years. I love E. Komisar’s work, she’s a needed voice in a cold hearted world! However, I feel like some of the advice in this video are unrealistic for moms of several children closely spaced. Like ”floor time” and endless patience. My day looks more like a neverending marathon of household duties and kids / baby related chores, while my 4-year old nags me about going out 500 times and starts to destroy things if we don’t, and my 1.5 creates a mess / is in immediate danger nonstop, and my 4-month old baby cries to be picked up more even though I feed on demand and carry him around for 1-3 hours almost every day. Add chronic sleep deprivation to that. Let me tell you, my patience is wearing thin. All that said - the love I get back from all this work is worth it without a doubt. But we need to add some common sense to the discussion.
