My visit to synthesizers.com
I had the privilege to visit the folks at DotCom. I brought my camera just to get some video of the large 110 space modular in their showroom and I'm trying to learn this new camera. Mike suggested I video behind the scenes and encouraged me to post it so the public can have a peek. This is in no way an advertisement and I'm not compensated in any way other than to get to see my favorite synthesizer company making modules!
I have an 88 space system that I bought and love what they do.
First, if you're interested in DotCom modular, you should go on their website, synthesizers.com and sign up for the email newsletter. They periodically send out notices of specials and sales! Also, join the Friends of synthesizers.com facebook page. They announce sales there as well.

Check out vcvrack. It’s a virtual modular synthesizer you can download to your computer for free! Synthesizers.com has many of their modules available in vcvrack. Also free. If you like the idea of try it before you buy it this may be just the ticket. Check it out.

Back in the 80's I put together a bedroom studio built around the Tascam 388 Reel to Reel. This was the first tune I put together. My gear was, Oberheim OB-8 Oberheim Xpander Oberheim DX Drum Machine Emu Emax Sampler 360 Systems Midi Bass There is a lot of Xpander in this as well as Emu choir etc. I thought it would be fun to bring it back with some video. Hope you like it! OH! and, an AI gener...

All analog sounds aren't necessarily smooth and clean. You can get raunchy if you want. This sequence is just showing some clanging type sounds with me improving over it with tuned fifths. @geoelectro #modular #synthsizer #electronic music

well done!
Very nice but you need an OBX to really nail it.
I used to have an OB-8. 😃 Actually I received a lengthy email from a viewer explaining how this sound was made and included notation. Once I saw that I realized I didn’t exactly get it right. My interpretation was from listening to another posted video of THX of which there are several and they don’t all sound the same either. It was a fun exercise…
I’ll have to listen again on big speakers. I admit I only heard it on iPad. Either way, I applaud your expertise and results. Cheers
@@ernestsample283 You made me miss my OB-8 all over again! Ha Ha!
super cool :)
Thank you 🤗 Glad you enjoyed!
My favorite synth company
And mine!
LOL that knife rack cracked me up! What a treat to go see them.
Yeah, I was like a kid in a candy store!
Cool tour! 🙌🙌
Thanks John, Always a treat to go by there.
Great company! Amazing products and customer support.
Yes! There service is awesome! Great people.
3:00 Knives, Keith Emerson?
Yes, I believe so.
That dagger distributor is hilarious! 😆👍
Nice tour!! Thank you.
I enjoyed making it!
wow!!!
Very cool George
Is "3rd row of timing" supposed to work with an external clock? Mine, behringer doesn't.... I wonder why they did that
Not sure I understand your question. Third row timing is a switch that causes the third row tuning knobs to adjust the duration of each step. Normally each step, whether internally clocked or externally, has the same duration. When third row timing is on, the tuning knobs of the third row now adjust the duration of each step. This is a way to create a rhythmic pattern.
😊@@geoelectrohi. Unfolrtunatly in the behringer 960, the clone, 3rd row timing doesnt work with external clock. I was wondering if the original 960 was the same or not... Are you sure yours works either ext clock or internal one?
@@LazarusGordon I think we’re mixing up two different things. First, my video about external clock had nothing too with third row timing. It was about running the whole sequencer from an external clock so it could be sync’d with a DAW etc. Third row timing is a feature that sets the duration of each step using the attenuators on the third row. Whether using the internal or an external clock, third row timing will just set duration. If likely yours doesn’t have the external clock option. This was something synthesizers.com put in their copy of the original Moog 960. I don’t know if the original Moog had this option either. Of course you can use the shift input to clock the sequencer as an option.
If you’re using the shift input for an external clock the third row timing won’t work. The third row timing is adjusting the internal osc speed for each step. I will test to see if it works with an external clock. It may not. Sorry if I misunderstood your original question.
OK. It does work with the external clock driving the oscillator. Remember, this is a quirk of the synthesizers.com version of the 960. Behringer likely used the original Moog version to emulate. Driving the sequencer (either type) with the shift input goes around the oscillator and as such the third row timing has no effect.
awesome!
Question: are you still building these? I have a business prop for you?
GReat idea George! I'm going to do in these Christmas holidays
VERY cool!
This is good stuff! Thank you.
This is good stuff!! Started my 5U synth in February and have already filled a 44 cab and 16 cab, and there's more on the way. Not sure why I didn't start this 20+ years ago. Thank you for the video and the delicious sounds.
I wondered why I waited too!
@@geoelectro It's incredibly satisfying. Ready to flip it on now and have a whiskey. Cheers!
That’s a nice piece George, thanks for sharing
Steam engines and modular! Perfect. What a machine! That whistle sounds like it belongs on a ship!
That very cool.
What a super way to start my day. Thanks George 😊
Listen with your headphones on! Great 🎹 🎹 🎹 🎹 🎹
What a good idea! This could work well on the Q109 to be able to switch between "extra long" & normal envelope times, make a Q108 an attenuverter, or switch features on a Q106.
That's right. I have one Q109 set to long and the other set to normal. I'll have to look at the !108 to see what it has to offer. Thanks for watching!
😳 Good grief! Yes, it could happen! I don't have a Q960 so I'll have to entertain the kidnappers with my Q119 instead! Thanks for warning of potentially hazardous performance situations George 😅😂🤣😂
We must remain vigilant 😎
Very useful
Thanks. Glad it's helpful.😊

Thanks! Appreciated.
Sounds great. Not weird. Nice!
Thanks. Awesome!
Cool 🙂...a mixture of darkness and light...not weird at all. Thanks George.
Thank you!
very cool but it doesn't feel dark to me, to my ears its more like thoughtful, serious. Great composition either way!
Thanks, much appreciated!
Like it Jorge!
Thank you sir!
Thank you so much from France for all your tutorials. So interesting 😊🙏
Thank you. You’re very kind.🙂

I got to get me an FM electone
Yeah, they are cheap these days. When I got this I had not played an FM product in years. I had forgotten how good they sound!
Alan Parsons vibes :)
nice track
Thanks much!
Thanks George. I like the way you think out of the box and even more that you share those thoughts with us all 🙂
Thanks for watching!
thanks for the great video!!! i recently solved this too with an attenuated square LFO to the v/o in, but that can also get messy with phase and timing depending on the modules used. but i really love how there's ways to conserve resources in modular, thinking to yourself things like "this part of the patch is using up a lot of steps on a sequencer" or "i want to free up this module to use for another thing, how can i do it"... there's optimizations for most patches to reduce the number of cables and modules used too. how to make the most with what you have is a fun challenge.
It's a fun challenge! And you are right, we can often optimize a patch and using less resources. Thanks for the comment!
Great tip. Thanks George
You are most welcome.😊
Nice.
What an awesome piece of kit you have there, only wish I could afford the same. Really liked your evolving music 😀👍
Thanks. I never thought I would end up with a modular synth. Always wanted one but... Then I bought a smaller used one. Built new boxes and added on to it. So it was built over a period of about 5 years. Still discovering new sounds from it!
DRONE OOO0ON!
And on and on and……😂
Awesome Jorge!!!
Thanks!!
Lovely vibe! Thank you!!
You're so welcome!
Very nice George. Thank you 👏👏

@geoelectro I also meant to say thanks for your break down of what you used. Always interesting.
