      Thanks for watching! Years ago, when I was in college in the '80's, i worked for a bonsai nursery in NY called Bonsai Designs. Mostly commercial bonsai, especially for back then. An amazing advantage was the exposure to most of the species used for bonsai. For 3 years all I did was prune, wire and propagate. I was also charged with maintaining the many collections of trees that were scattered around at the time. I really enjoyed the conventions and spending time with the instructors like Naka and Tomlinson... back before youtube it was pretty rare to get that kind of exposure. That experience has carried me though the years growing bonsai on my own with that commercial production experience as a foundation, making it a lot easier to develop the design and artistic skills for bonsai.

    Totally agree with @TomLongAnimation. Wish I had access to this kind of stuff when I first started. I have about 40 2/3 year old jb pines on the go. At the start of this year I wired a load of them just like in the video and they now have some great gnarly ridges in the lower trunks due to wire bite. I grew all these from seed so I am extra happy how they look.

    Is there any point in using electrical tape over raffia to retain moisture in normal applications (when the core is not removed)? When is it appropriate?

    • @MakeMoreBonsai
      @MakeMoreBonsai 4 місяці тому

      THAT is a good question! I chose to use the rubber gasket on this one because 2/3 of the trunk was removed to make it flexible. The rubber gasket would help retain more moisture in this extreme case. I do prefer raffia because it does allow some air to circulate and eventually erodes over time. The rubber gasket does require me to remain mindful and remove it as soon as possible to prevent any rot etc.

    With all due respect, looks like it needs sacrifice branches/ leaders and more time in the ground, as the trunk isn't large enough to be proportionate to the foliage size. It has great potential, but I don't think it's in refinement stage yet

    • @MakeMoreBonsai
      @MakeMoreBonsai 5 місяців тому

      I can appreciate your POV. I suppose if the tree were going to be entered into contest of some sort at this stage - it wouldn't make it into though the first round. In this case the choice was made, and the challenge was/is to develop a bonsai with this caliper of trunk. Bonsai for some can be the pursuit of indisputable championship material... and for others it can be the joy of challenging oneself to accomplish something within the pursuit that is only definable by one's own vision, or anywhere in between. The sprit of this channel is not to display mind blowing bonsai material. The goals of these videos is to instruct and inspire anyone looking for some bonsai insight, so that more folks can experience joy and success at making bonsai. Keep in mind.. this is just the beginning of year 3 of training for this tree! Who knows what lessons in year five or ten this tree will have to offer? Please stick around! I'd love to see some of your trees and hear some of your bonsai stories.

    I started about two years ago with my bonsai adventure. I have a number of seedlings and pre-bonsai trees in pots. I have up potted some and tried using different soils, soil amendments and fertilizers. My smaller Japan’s black pines (JBP) are doing okay. However I am trying to decide on what branches to keep (as an escape branch) and which ones to cut back. I’m afraid of cutting too much and causing the tree’s growth to be stunted.

      Thats a great start! Its always good to have a few to experiment with so you learn what works. I do have a video in the works that hopefully will offer some insight into what you're up to. For now its best to keep them healthy and growing at the 2 year mark... then take that time to experiment with wiring and research techniques for those branch decisions.
