The Battle River Railway - A Journey Across The Heartbeat Of The Prairies (Pt1) Trackside Adventures
On June 14, 2024, we visited the Battle River Railway to get an exclusive tour. The village of Forestburg, located in East-Central Alberta, is home to the Battle River Railway. In 2009, local grain producers faced losing a vital transportation link when the Canadian National Railway planned to Abandon the line. In 2010, the Battle River Producer Car Group purchased the branch line from CN, forming the Battle River Railway.
The line consists of nearly 60 miles of track, serving communities between Alliance, AB, and Camrose, AB. The Battle River Railway's main commodity is grain loads, which are interchanged with the Canadian National Railway in Camrose and shipped to larger exporters. The Battle River Railway also provides services to a few smaller industries and is responsible for storing numerous surplus rail cars during seasons when bulk commodity shipments decline.
In Part 1 of this video series, we start our journey in Forestburg and document the crew as they switch Forestburg yard. From there, we will follow the train through Hielser, Ankerton, and arrive in Rosiland, where we will conclude Part 1 of this series.
The Battle River Railway is a unique, shortline operation, which holds a significant responsibility of servicing the small communities located along the 60-mile branch line.
We hope you enjoy Part 1 of this 4-part video series, as much as we did documenting this small, but powerful Class 3 Railway.

Holiday Train comes to town... More!
I live in Calgary, grew up in Calgary and lived in rocky for 4 years, and I’ve driven through brrs area of operation many of times and I had no idea this even existed! Very cool thanks for the video!
trains parked near the edge of the layout - obviously no cats or small chldren.
I live here, WE NEED THE WHOLE VIDEO!
Very nice catches. Thanks for the video and narration.
I'd like to watch.....but that bluring effect....Has got to go....I'd really like to watch....some good stuff...again the bluring is going to make us blind. Cheers!
The constant blur fades are incredibly annoying
verys cool vlog
Very cool! Fun watching from this perspective. Thanks for sharing.
Did your gopro camera in the video move up and down by the train
Great video, gets a little slow at 20:30.
Couple of nice fucking trains ya got there bud.
I enjoyed every twist and turn on this track as did my work colleagues as they gathered around my work station.
I’m glad I could be of service ;)
Great run...
Hi Nick & It's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Nick & Friends Randy
Very nice layout. I like how you have both the upper and lower levels set up so that you can run trains around in a loop for like if you do an open house, yet for operation purposes you have to go around the whole upper level to get to the transload site and you have to go around the whole lower level to get to the yard from the upper level.
Thanks! I spent a lot of time planning the layout design to incorporate continuous running and point to point
thanks great ride
You’re welcome!
That’s a big layout! Great job on it very well thought out
Thank you!
Nice
This looks great. Just looks so fun to run & deliver goods. Aewesome!
The operation sessions are definitely busy, and the “fun” runs across the layout are definitely enjoyable too!
Great action on the RCP in all 3 videos! Nice shots as well Nick!
Great catches, shots, & video Nick!
Nick Awesome job on the layout thanks for sharing new sub have a nice 😊😊👍👍
Thanks you! Also thanks for the sub!
Impressive layout, definitely needs lighting? Those LED tapes are a cheap effective option?
Thank you! Yes, LED strip lights will be installed sooner than later hopefully! I know eBay has a lot of cost effective options!
Your rail network is incredible, it is gigantic 😲
Thanks you! I’m glad you enjoyed!
That was a great layout tour, Nick. The layout is really taking shape and it must be awesome to operate.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed!
Very nice tour. Really enjoyed getting to see the layout. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed!
Excellent execution of a point to point theme.
Thank you! Growing up where the forestry industry is booming, I couldn’t help but model what I see!
Hi Nick it’s Good To know When you started the Layout But the Real thing you Will Understand This And Listen Don’t matter When You Are Done Model Railroading is A Passionate Theraputic thing you get done When You get Done and Yes You are The Biggest Crittic Of that Layout.
Biggest critic indeed! It’s always a slower process than anticipated but the results are worth it!
Looks awesome Nick
Thank you!
Nice work! You mentioned helix’s being an after thought. How were you going to connect both levels initially?
Thank you! The levels were joined by one steady grade from the lower to upper level. Where the tracks initially started the climb to the upper level, used to enter the backdrop and come out where the large bridge scene is located. It was 3 times the grade it is now. It was both unrealistic and stalled many trains. It didn’t take long for me to change the design!
Hi Nick & it's is Randy and i like yours and i like yours video is cool & Thanks & Friends & Randy
Very methodical approach. I like that the benchwork is all trimmed out with the fascias. It gives some sense of completion even though there is much yet to do. It makes it a nicer area to work and spend time as you progress through these later stages of the build.
Yes, the fascia board really finishes off the layout well. Showcases the trains and the eventual scenery. Thanks for watching!
WOW... Nice work... Very impressive...Looking forward to following the progress...
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy following along!
Thanks great layout tour
Thank you!
Very fun looking layout. Can't wait to see you start adding scenery and more buildings😅
Thank you! It’s definitely fun when things go smoothly! I’m looking forward to more scenery and structure too!
amazoing layout
Thanks you!
Dear Nick, very interesting how you showed the entire layout! Love the way you did the ‘ceilings’ of the different levels. Very cool how that changes the perspective sky wise. Will be cool to see how you’re going to light the levels. Cheerio
Thank you! Yes, lighting the valence is one of those projects that have been continually pushed back! It will be nice once the layout has proper lighting installed!
This is a great layout and it will keep you occupied for many years. Are there lights in the canopies over the layout? I'm guessing you didn't switch them on or haven't installed them yet?
Yes it sure will! Would love to process the layout further! Lighting is just one of those projects that I have continually pushed back! One day soon I hope to get the valence lit up properly
Very nice job on informing us on how you came up with the branch line and purpose. Layout looks very good, always enjoy watching your updates.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed. The branchline operations give a unique switching options and add an interesting dynamic to the layout!
Very nice tour and explanation of your layout. You have done a lot of planning and your clear explanations reflect that. There will be several areas that will photograph very well, namely the rock section. You are doing things in a methodical way. This will ultimately benefit you and assist with easing frustration as you start to focus in on scenery. It's the journey not the destination. Look forward to your next update and thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Slow, steady, and methodical process, but I am liking how the layout operations are coming together. Lots of good scenic opportunities to come!
amazing layout! nice track plan, terrain shaping and interesting plans :)
Thank you!
Looking great so far!
Thank you!
Looking awesome nick marshall I hope come to a spokane train show someday I love video when on si it's busy isn't it
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed
@@SD70ACEguy your welcome buddy
Espero que llegue a México para irlo a ver.
I'm very happy that this engine is running again. I hope that they continue running this for years to come.
how are you tracking when it leaves? the tracker on their site doesnt say anything about departure times.
Honestly. I just winged it from the start of every trip when I followed this train. Usually started with an early morning, long drive… and drove until I came across it.
@@SD70ACEguy man thats dedication. i think i just lost my railfan card.
Thanks for the overhead capture of @brickolage_YYC display at the opening 10 seconds of the video.
I can’t be the only one who has been thinking this and call me a racist if you want but hopefully it survives it’s stay in Mexico without getting vandalized
Thanks for the kind words for the Calgary Lego train club layout. It always feels good to get attention from traditional modelers! My contribution was the Weyerhaeuser lumber facility at the end. Cheers, Alex
