    You're tagged up, dirty, grimy boxcars look fantastic! And even though you're in the primary stages of your layout build, you're further along than I am, because I'm still struggling to find an area to model either in SoCal, or the PNW, and only have about 3,5 m / 11.5 ft for a shelf layout. * subscribed * Oh, next video Ryerson Steel, and Cold Storage please, and that paper mill is very intriguing.

    Where does "Violet" come from?

    • @VSLAModelRR
      @VSLAModelRR 4 місяці тому

      From what I understand, the line started around Violet Street in LA, a little south of 7th street and ran North-South along Sante Fe St. It was just an 'alley' of industries where they actually had to block the train correctly from the yard as there was no runarounds. But anyway, that is how "Violet Alley" got its name.

One thought for the "brick" building: you could cut holes where the "windows" got sealed up, and the laminate a second photo-wallpaper layer behind it to add some depth. I used to photograph bands and various people in the old Violet Alley track back in the 80s. There was still a track up to 7th St. then, but I'm pretty sure it had already stopped being used by then. Then I went back and took shots of whatever i could find left back around 05. The last car I remember seeing being parked in the area was a tank car on Palmetto St. S of Mateo. That was the late 80s. That area has been so gentrified now, you can't even recognize it.

    Hi, what you've created is very nice. I watched cars door modification very closely. I bought two Prairie Shadows cars for that purpose. Are you planing to finish the inside ? Also... Do you know what material is prototype floor made of ? Metal or wood. Keep on your good work.

    • @VSLAModelRR
      @VSLAModelRR 4 місяці тому

      Funny you should ask. I just came across an old MR article from Sept. 2015 on how to detail the inside of an empty boxcar and debris. I think I might do that for one of these. The article says the floor could be wood or metal, so not sure. Maybe check the real boxcar manf. website. Also, I took the door off of an Aurora box care, not Prairie Shadows, so I'm not sure if it works on that brand or not.

    • @lucgagnon5241
      @lucgagnon5241 4 місяці тому

      @@VSLAModelRR You're damn right. I bought Prairie Shadows cars because I like them a lot. But in fact, I was suppose to buy an Aurora model for the job. I wouldn't try to remove doors from a Prairie Shadows car. They're mold in the casting !!! Still I think it's a dangerous task to remove top on Aurora's boxcar. It's a $75 car for me (live in Canada). At the end, it's not that important if the car floor is not done to my point of view. It simply depends how many paper rolls are in it. I think I will glue a 20 thou styrene layer on weight, paint it and weather it a bit. I will also hide the weight sides with styrene seen when doors are removed. I REALLY like the picture of paper rolls warehouse. It's a huge building. Thanks for answering and sharing with us. Keep on your good work.

    How deep is your LA River? I am looking at doing a similar concrete river (not LA) and was wondering what a good depth is for these type of rivers to include the slopes and walls etc? Am looking at 75mm ? Yours looks like it may be more? Thanks

    • @VSLAModelRR
      @VSLAModelRR 6 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for asking. The river itself is 2.5 inches (65mm) deep. I screwed a 1x3 piece of lumber to the bottom, and the styrene walls lean up agiainst it for now. The walls are two different lengths. The front right, sort of by the Fascia, is 4.5 inches (115mm), the angle is shallower thus the longer cut. The parts by the bridges and then back to the wall are 3.75 in (95mm) long. The LA river has different wall angles as it rolls around so I used different sizes for different looks. I was just eyeballing it and that looked good to me. I think for the prototype I'd need a shallower angle by the front part.

    As another commenter said, they’re kraftboard rolls. They’re made in various lengths/sizes depending on what the customer orders. There are also different weights of kraftboard (thickness). The little labels are production labels that list all sorts of product info. The little sharpie line you made is typically a large barcode which the shippers and loaders scan for inventory purposes.

    What a great idea... Surely the doors can be removed without taking the roof off seeing that you know they are only held on by those 2 plastic pins on each side of the door, just put a blade in there and lightly lever them off.. less work than trying to remove the roof and then having to fix it back on again later.

    One thing on the cars I'll have to do after actually seeing the inside on the other video, I'll have to remove the weight to have the floor level where it should be. Weight will just be supplemented over the trucks out of sight.

      As long as they are at least 1/2 inch thick. For HO, I think 5/8 looks the best as these rolls are about 5-6ft across

    That's a nice cardboard facility. I'm working on a Injection Molding plant using a old Deluxe Innovation warehouse, Walthers modern warehouse (933-4067) and Walthers Plastic pellet transfer facility (933-3081). Not to many plastic pellet covered hoppers though. Atlas has the ACF 5250,5701 and 5800 capacity cars. ScaleTrains and Rapido have the ribbed side 5850 Pullman Standard and Procor car. Walthers did offer the NSC 6224 car. The ARI 6224 Center Flow now Greenbrier, Trinity's 6241* and Greenbrier's 6250 capacity cars need to be made in model form. FreightCar America has their 5800 and 6200 car but it looks similar to a NSC 6200 car. *Trinity's 6241 is probably the most popular out there and it definitely should be made into a model.

      Yeah, nice plastic pellet hoppers are hard to find. I have some Rapidos and then some Atlas ones from a few years back. That's pretty much it. That cardboard building is the Walthers Modern warehouse, or part of it, as well. Very versatile kit.

      @@VSLAModelRR I hoping ScaleTrains make the Trinity car like they did the carbon black hopper in three versions. The early car doesn't have end cut outs. There is definitely a need for more modern hoppers and tank cars.

    Nice job! Can you get the dowels in the sizes you want, or do you have to cut them to size?

      Cut them to size. I use my large saw outside but you could cut them with a smaller hand saw too, they are thin.

    Neat idea! Are the magnets maybe strong enough that you could glue them inside the box car and the door would still be held in place? That would certainly solve the visual aspect of having conceal/paint the magnets for when the door is closed.

    I like the format as a complement to your longer ops vids, and this is a simple but very effective little project. I haven’t decided yet exactly what products will be fabricated in my International Paper plant so I’ll have to give this a try. Thanks!

      Chances are they are getting either cardboard rolls or paper rolls inbound..

      Thanks for that, I felt like I was watching a work video but now I am contemplating how to make one of those clamp attachments for my forklift! I have some ideas...

      Thank you. I worked as a RR engineer at a paper mill until it shut down in 2012 and the clamp attachment on those forklifts was what I was about to comment on.

      Shapeways used carry one, but now they are done. Look for Model Mechanic or Custom Model Craftsman, they may have done one.
