Part two of the '78 Honda CB550 engine rebuild of the bottom end, hope this helps someone. Don't forget to place the primary chain hub/cush drive and starter gear assembly into the case prior to fitting the cases together, you can then slide the primary shaft through the case half etc...

Hey I’m working on a ryobi with this no spark You are the only person that has a good breakdown of the sequence of things for the spark. Excellent tutorial
@@josephpuchel6497 no probs, I find the ignition modules are unreliable in these units - Aliexpress has them though 👍
Looking online, apparently the parallel connectors are just connected directly to the L&N of the inverter, so maybe you could have a socket connected to more than two of these cables, and then run 3+ generators - have you had a look inside to see where these connect to?
Yes I think my are connected to the live and neutral the only other consideration is the inverter board of at least one of the machines would need to have the smarts to sink to the sone wave of their other genny etc
@@johnathankeough3027 You can. I made a 3-way cable and it works a treat. :)
Looking forward to see Part 2 where John Mick completes his impossible task and reassembles the generator fulfilling his contract and removing the blood marker. But will Wardston of the Continental revoke his membership? Nail-biting anticipation, I am on the edge of my seat.
Was that a Laizhou Honyuan Swordfish Vise from Shanghai that I see on attached your bench?

How much power does one need bro! lol well explained.
All of it 😂 I need a/c in media room for crying out loud
lol fair enough:) just need a Caravan now! :)
This would be brilliant during our cyclone season in North Queensland
Good job John
You do things well but on the critical parts, like primary shaft and chain, you do not show how to do it! For that I give you my dislike.
Thanks for the feedback.
Hello, thanks for sharing. I am also rebuilding a engine from a cb 650. Can you explain why the notch is/must facing the exhaust site of the motor. ? Greetz Alexander
Sorry could you tell me what time in the video you mean? I don't understand the question but if you tell me the time in the video I will look at it.
@@fingerscrossed2317 Because that’s the way the Honda manual shows how they face and as per the assembly drawings. I’m not sure if it’s to do with lubrication or to aide in the fact the piston arrow also faces exhaust. It might make this difficult to occur if it faces the intake manifold but mate it’s been so long ago I can’t honestly remember sorry.
Hi Johnathan. I didn't understand. What did you do to the crankcases: blasting (sand, soda, vapour?)/sanding. Did you paint them afterwards? If yes, which pain/primer did you use?
Soda blasted the cases mate no paint used
Hi Johnathan. Thanks for your nice and clear videos. I've a Honda CB 550 F2 1977 (USA). To replace the start clutch do I need to separate the upper and lower crankcases? Alfredo
Hi Alfredo I have read before this is possible to be done without dismantling the entire engine. Refer to this post as it explains this fiddly process and has pics forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=122084.0
good job mate
I'm having to replace the seals on the trim/tilt unit on my 2013 150hp motor, which requires removing the unit. But it is proving to be difficult as the bottom pin is stuck up and not having too much success removing it so far. Doesn't want to budge. Will continue and see what happens. Also had problems with the top pin as the pin bolt broke when trying to remove it and had to drill it out. So not a simple job!!
Thanks so much for making this video. You saved me big $'s.
Awesome video ! I have my rebel 450 engine top end apart looking for anything that would cause a knocking in the engine. Any advice on what to check for? It’s. 86 rebel 450. So far I don’t see anything wrong with it. Thank you! I’ve been at it for weeks now.
G’day James, it’s a bit hard to say but my money would be on a knocking sound coming from the bottom of the engine. Generally speaking top engine noises are usually clicking, rattling, grinding etc. from things such as worn timing chains, bent valves, worn timing chain guides/adjusters or flogged out bearing surface e.g. cam bearings or white metal surfaces. Knocking is usually worn connecting rod big end or small end wear, wrist pin to piston flogged out, scuffed piston skirts, worn out roller bearings etc. Your engine uses roller bearings on the mains so I would drop the oil through a rag and into a clean oil pan see if you get any significant shiny metal out. Either way mate unfortunately a knock is never good news. Usually rocking the engine back and forward with head removed you can generally find play/slop in the piston up and down etc.
very helpfull , Thanks .
Awesome, I have to do same thing. Thank very much your video!
Hello Jonathan, Your videos have given me the confidence to completely rebuild my CB550 including new big ends and main bearings. Brilliant and thank you so much. Absolutely saved my bacon. I have one question. I've been struggling with my brain cell to work out which way round the big end shells go regarding the locator notch in the shell. The way you've done it in the video seems to be opposite to that in the manual. You both agree the notches on the big end shells should face the exhaust valves (front of the engine) but it looks like you've installed them the other way round. Or the other possibility is my brain is not working right and I need a slap. Either way thanks Jonathan, it's been so useful.
Pretty sure the slotted side of the pivot pin goes on the port side and the sender senso fits into it.
The slotted side of the pin on the upper pin of the cylinder faces starboard as is shown in all mercury schematics, the sensor does not fit into this pin in anyway.
Nice video! Wasn't your engine still under warranty? I have a 2018 150 and it came with a 3+3 year warranty. My issue is massive corrosion of the trim motor. For some reason that seems to be a big problem with these Mercury outboards based on other pictures I've seen online. Based on my initial contact with Mercury they, are reluctant to cover that under their corrosion warranty. I rinse my boat and motor extensively after each use.
No Scooter it only had 3 years warranty as we stopped taking it to our local Mercury agent for servicing etc...
» Cordialement, le Service Après-vente Mercury Marine France Infoconso Mercury Marine France Service Technique & Après-Vente Brunswick Marine in France Rue Jacques Monod, 17044 La Rochelle Cedex 1, France infoconso@mercmarine.com @@johnathankeough3027
These videos are awesome man, thanks so much for taking the time to post them! I have a 1976 CB550K that I'll be rebuilding from the ground up when I get back home from this deployment and this video was such an amazing sneak peak into what I plan on doing myself!
Glad they helped mate there a fun bike to work on actually some very clever engineering for there time. I have a triumph t140d Bonneville an must admit the machining is pretty secondhand compared to the Honda , it also a lot more oil tight than my trumpy 😂
What year motor is that off of??, i just picked up my first bike, a 74 cb550 and im rebuilding the motor but cant find any bearings for the crankcase , would ya be able to help me out?
1978 motor I believe. I looked up the bearing part numbers and found a green colour set on eBay in Japan. Other sellers in the States had partial sets at the time as well mate.
John Keough what would the color mean in terms of difference? Would the 78 bearings match the 74?
@@bwtegu7135 the bearings need the be plastigauged to the crank e.g. no two crank journals are the same so Honda had 4 different bearing colour sets to match the crank green set being more standard and black being the tightest / smallest. There's also yellow and brown I believe. You need to micrometer the crank journals then use plastigauged to get correct clearance when crank tightened into bearings, plenty videos on you tube showing this procedure.
John Keough gotcha, where would you recommend i source the bearings that actually sit inside of the crank case, like the transmission bearings and what not aside from the crank and rod bearings?
@@bwtegu7135 I found most of the normal roller bearings at standard bearing shops e.g. SKF, Stateside Bearings, Consolidated Bearings etc here in Australia. The only ones that you might struggle with were any that had a retaining ring groove cut into them I just grabbed the Honda part no. and put it in eBay and found these.
Thank you so much for posting your CB550 videos, they have helped me enormously with my rebuild. My bike was bought with a loud noise emanating from the gearbox/clutch area. After stripping down I discovered the kickstart ramp arm had become bent after the previous owners over zealous kick starting resulting in the ratchet being constantly engaged. Fixed this and am no putting it all back together.
Total hero!! I am changing my crank casing, cylinder head and rocker cover due to a previous owner stripping pretty much all the threads and snapping a cylinder stud. tried taping them and drilling the stud out but they just keep failing over time. Your videos have made me bite the bullet and get change them all over. Thank you soooo!!! much.
Your welcome mate. I had a few rocker cover threads stripped had to helicoil them but came out good as new.
Mate you are a star
Man that looks beautiful, i am getting ready to tackle mine soon, how did you get it so nice looking? vapor blasting?
Soda blasting matey came out nice.
I'd just add for people watching this that you should not use normal silicone to seal cases. I use Loctite aviation gasket, Hondabond or Yamabond as they stay soft and gooey, never leak and wont brake down/mix with oil like silicon does. If a tiny bit of silicon gets into the oil then it will block the oil feed to the head (only about .4 of a mm) .
Great help, gave me the confidence to do my first gearbox, thanks.
Hi All - Just an update as talked about in the video I ended up having to reuse the original cross drilled brass mixture screws. The ones in the kit that were not crossed drilled (solid) made the bike run extremely rich at idle. Just an FYI if anyone else has this issue. Cheers John.
Sweet bro:)
Sweet bro:) you know your stuff!
