Commemorating a “Robin Hood”

DIY - ARCHERY TARGET
Переглядів 7 тис.11 місяців тому
I made this target a while ago, and didn't film the build. However, it was time to shuffle the layers, so I thought I would take a moment to show the construction and the process. This had a little bit of an investment upfront in purchasing the gym flooring mats, but by periodically, shuffling them around this may end up being a "lifetime" target. Flooring purchased from Amazon. See link below....

ARCHERY NERDS ONLY!! TAC vanes on Bitzenburger
A range will blow that out in a week. I have a larger version of this called the range beast. It was $600 for a 48 x 48. It is ok as a backstop. You can blow out spots very quickly if you shoot spots on it. I hate to say it but a bag target is about the best thing you can get for durability and ease of pull.
That’s my guess too but man, I hate a bag target….
I mad a square out of 12” plywood rips, stapled a dog food bag on one side then stuffed it with as many rags as I could, then stapled another dog food bag on the other side. I shoot 20-50 arrows on average every other day for the past 3 yrs. When the the face gets worn, I staple another bag on. I live in Arizona and my target endures the worst elements .
I’ve done something similar but ugh bag targets…
I asked Scott exactly the same upgrade on the longhorn pro micro and now I am happy they got it! I just bought one expert and I have great expectations on it as l have also the old longhorn red III and the micro as well, which are my favourite releases ever. I have also the Ascent and I never had a problem with the moons moving. I totally agree with you also about the handle of the longhorn compared with the Ascent.
Great minds…!!
Ascent is an awesome release . Shooting them for years never had one move after it was set or heard of it from anyone else.
But does the adjustment stay? Many guys have complained about the ascent because you would make adjustments.. then the thing would move on ya! Does this new model stay put when you set it? One of the real goats in the truball Ht and the HBC. if they made these two release have babies.. The ht non taper with the 3rd finger curl of the HBC. it would be perfect…. add texture inside on the 2, 3rd finger and leave the index finger smooth. man that would be epic.
Having had the ascent, I can say that I never had an issue with the moons moving. I have heard this rumor about the UV hinge but can’t confirm or deny. Too soon to tell on the expert, but so far so good and expect zero problems in this dept.
AND if HT ever made a two moon system or otherwise somehow made the click to fire adjustable id happily try that too
$80 ??? LOL
Cheaper just buy a made one shit another 30 and you can get a doe target
I’ve had my Ascent for a while now and it’s my absolute favorite release. The ONLY downside is the rubber band, so when I saw this, I knew I needed one. Haven’t ordered it yet, but it’s on the short list
I tried so hard to love the Ascent. I just couldn’t get comfortable and repeatably comfortable. I know it’s totally subjective but this longhorn fits me perfectly. AND I get the buttery smooth release that the dual moon system gives!!! Awesome.

I made a 4x4 ft target backstop from laytaof carsboard sandwiched between 2x6s w all thread, lasted for many years without needing anything
Indoor only, I assume? I have heard of the layered cardboard idea. May have to try that. Ultimately, this purchase was a kind of R&D for an outdoor public range.
@stringmusicarchery no, outside. Added a piece of plywood under the 2x6
@@zanetracks6592 !! I may have to hunt up some cardboard!
Don’t like having to leave all that crap on it

I made the same target using 1/2" mats (24' squares cut in half) from Harbor Freight. I only use it for testing my broadheads, however, because I found the heat generated from the friction of the target arrow shafts melted the mats to the shafts and made their removal nearly impossible! I thought about "loosening" up the nuts so the mats wouldn't be compressed so tightly, but instead, I made a mammoth target out of discarded floor carpeting I got from a local flooring company when they did a "tear out" to put in new carpet. I cut the carpet in (I think) 14 or 18" widths, 4' long, and stacked them up about 5.5' high! THE CARPET TARGET IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE cuz it's so large, but it's strictly an outdoor target, covered with a tarp when not in use, where I enjoy sharpening my technique at distances up to 100yds. With the foam (broadhead) target, I use a piece of horse stall mat, (3/4") that hangs freely ( can swing if/when hit) from a 2x4 about 8-10" behind the foam target. The reason for this is that as everyone knows, it doesn't take long to "shoot out" the mats, and to prevent total pass throughs, the broadhead arrow hits the stall mat, it gives a bit, and with the friction on the shafts, even when the foam is in poor condition, it stops the arrows w/o pass through. I always get a broadhead pass through, so I just unscrew the broadhead before pulling the shaft out which really helps extend the longevity of the foam layers. And, as you've shown here, it is very easy to loosen the nuts and "shuffle" or just replace those pieces that necessary. I've even taken the shot out pieces, and if their not already in 2 pieces, I cut them, put the shot out ends to the outside and solid ends to the middle and get even more life out of them! Sorry for the excessive explanation......
I imagine that carpet target is HEAVY! Got call on the horse stall mat for sure. I e seen that or similar before. Solid idea.
I did something similar. I collected dozens of oil boxes from auto stores. Broke them don flat and layered them in between the wooden boards and tightened. I used it to practice with my crossbow.
Layered cardboard is one I’ve never tried. I’ve heard of it but never put it to the test. Thanks for the support!
@@stringmusicarchery It worked ok for field points. If you used broadheads, you had to loosen the screws a little to pull the bolt out. It held up ok outdoors.
Doesn't appear to be a self healing type of foam and will be shot out quickly?
Yeah very possible. Since it’s layered, I’m hoping that the life can be extended by shuffling the layers. Just like the floor mat target. We’ll see!
That’s really a good deal. That hard chips of plastic and foam molded/bonded is better than those cloth stuffed Morrel targets. Those bag targets are way over priced anymore. I’ve seen this material at a few ranges in huge 3x3’ and it’s good stuff. Didn’t even know this was for sale. Even the Morrel replacement bag covers are nearly $30 each now plus freight. And the prices on the 3-d animal targets has gotten ridiculous.
Agreed. The layered foam targets tend to be my favorites. Initial cost of some may be high but the ability to rotate layers to extend life is huge. Thanks for the support!
Best target in the world is a cardboard box whatever size you want and stuff it with old clothes and costs nothing. Once it gets shot out get another box. Arrows stop like nothing and a toddler could pull out the arrow. Your welcome!!
Just need a new box every time.
Ive made a couple of these in the past arrow removal is easy for sure but I tend to prefer foam for the flat face to pin on target faces.
I can second packed old clothes in a box, IF it's gonna stay indoor. I also haven't tried a broadhead on it.
@rolldysharpshooter6593 ya don't do broadheads I have but it twists all up into the clothes and a pain in ass to get out. Just fieldpoints works great. I use one outside too I put it onto a small dolly and wheel it into garage when I'm done cause of course you don't wanna leave it out in rain or snow.
I use old fertiliser/ compost plastic bags as stuffing. 100 % waterproof.
Good review. I purchased a portable target Walk-on Archery 'MarXman' that looks like it contains that same stuff. It reminds me of very thick carpet padding. This looks like a great DIY solution if you have the space for it. The Walk-on version makes me think you might want to wrap a bag around it to deal with the flacking.
Good idea and it would be cool if the bag had a target face or target face options. After shooting for a couple days, I’m not loving the multicolored part of it. Adding a bag would give it color consistency and possibly a better contrast when I shoot my orange DOBA ball or similar. Thanks for the support!
I want to give you a tip. Please listen but on the end, you do you. That NOSE button. Get rid of it. It’s not needed at all. I did not see where you hold your hand at full draw, but here is what I have done for decades. The knuckles of my release holding hand, they anchor behind my jaw bone. Bone on bone anchor. At FULL draw. Then you have the peep, then the front sight. That’s three points of reference. I see some who still use a kisser button and a nose button. These are unneeded things and they add weight to your strong that should not be there. That nose button does nothing do you and than making YOU feel better, but it is not needed. Many anchor on the side of their face. That is NOT an anchor. That’s where full draw is for them though. Maybe you too. I could not see that hand placement. But like I said, with a good solid anchor point, the peep and the front sight, that’s all you need. Two points is enough with today’s bows having draw stops, but I still like a solid bone on bone anchor point. In the end, you do you, but that is one extra thing you are worrying over than you don’t need to. Imagine a short hunting now with an extreme string angle. How can you get your. One on that without leaning your head down to touch it? Also an extremely long bow like a target bow and the string comes beside your nose. That’s there your eye is anyway. You sue os jot in the middle of your forehead. Think about that one. No need worrying where the string is. Solid anchor, peep and front sight. 3 points of alignment. More than with a rifle, am I correct? Just front and rear sights there.
Thanks for the comment and it’s absolutely solid advice. I started using the nose button as an additional anchor point to be added to the mix for when my knuckle on my jaw was compromised. Whether I’m hunting with gloves on or twisted in my deer stand at a goofy angle. When shooting normally it is always my last point of reference in my shot sequence. Almost as a check that all systems are “go.” Anyway, I appreciate the comment!
@@stringmusicarchery I like my nose button, especially for hunting. When in a blind or a treestand the deer don't cooperate and stand where I want them, so I end of in odd positions. The nose button gives me a way to make sure that I am aligned (pin, peep, nose - fire).
J.R. Outdoors sent me over to your channel. Good build on the target 👍
Thank you!! Appreciate the support!
Did you buy the bow press?
No. It was a good deal for that and the draw board but I just couldn’t turn loose of the money. I had my fingers crossed that the price would be too good to turn down but… not this time. Lol
@You’ll find a good deal at some point.
Hey, thanks man. Pulling that arrow looked easier than I expected. I think I’ll look into building a target using your idea.
Glad to do it. I’ll say that this design has lots of variables. Between the thickness of the foam, how much you decide to crank down on the all thread - “easy removal” mileage may vary. If you do make it let me know how it turns out!
Looks awesome going give it a try this weekend

Great video. Only thing, how hard is it to pull out the arrows? Could you make a short video shooting a few arrows at that 3 yard distance and show yourself pulling them out? Thanks.
I can probably do that. It’s not a hard pull but it’s definitely not a two finger pull either. I’ll see if I can get a “short” out for you soon. Thanks for the support!!
I did this but with cardboard. A ton of cardboard and the arrow only goes half way in. Layers make a different and how hard you squeeze it all.
I’d heard of folks using cardboard before but was concerned about the lack of flex or memory it has, so I picked the foam. Glad to hear that you tried it and that it works so well. Sounds cheaper for sure and repair would be just as easy. I may give it a shot for the next one. Thanks!!
I made a cardboard target.and my arrow blew through it and had to refletch@stringmusicarchery
Well did you come to a conclusion on the hat brim eye glass yet?
I think I have. The short version of the story is that the lens is a win. There will be a follow up video in the future but a cool product for sure.
I love this idea. I'm making some tonight and will trying it out. Thanks for sharing.
Hey man, thanks! Like I said in the video, stay tuned. Got something cool planned for the “DOBA Balls” in the next video or so. Appreciate the support!!
Nice video. You did a great job of explain everything about your build and price break down. One thing that i have found is that TEMU is selling different "brands" of products, but they don't allow them to advertise their brand name (one of their vendors told me about it). So you never know what you are buying, and their descriptions suck. It's seems to be hit or miss with many of their product, but i have found some good buys on certain things. overall great video. You earned my sub.
Do you sale arrows?
Nah. Never thought to try. Appreciate the interest and support though!
Dude that is awesome.. Good find
Thanks 👍
I built my DYI target in a very similar way about 10 years ago. I went overkill with 5/8" this all-thread and used 2x4s on top and bottom. I agree with you on the mat thickness. I will revert back to the 1/2" thick puzzle mat. I have shot the heck out of the 1" thick mats and it works just fine, but, it seems that the thicker layers break down a little quicker than the 1/2". Great video! Keep them coming.
Heck yeah, man! The thinner mats seem to have more of a self healing quality to them. Thanks for the support!
I got these stickers for those longer ranges . give me a better point of aim and much cheaper ...
Oh I agree! I keep a bright pink roll of duct tape in my range bag and usually tear a little 1" square for an aiming point for real practice. The clays are fun but don't come out too often. Thanks for the comment and support!
I had to bite the bullet here recently and go with contacts!!!!
hahaha Right there with you brother , 54 , the glasses living on the t shirt lmao , just started my archery game again after 3/4 years away and wow , cant see my pin lol , so added a verifier peep which is amazing , BUT , yes , yardage tape and other things , no go , I like this idea of that hat clip , ordered and then came back to comment ... I can also see it useful for work
Haha! I am right on the verge of trying the verifier peep. Talk about the quintessential “Archery For Old Guys” video idea!! Thanks for the support and let me know what you think of the flip lens doodad!
Are you holding the nock in certain position for EVERY arrow for consistency? or does that matter? maybe you covered that in other video ...
Yes. 100% for consistency. Check out my video where I did the full build for the arrows being wrapped in this one. ua-cam.com/video/lyWhVvxx_wU/v-deo.html - If you don't want to watch the full thing (I get it, I'm long winded...) start at about 5:45 mark. After determining the spine, I line the wrap up with that mark, then put my top fletch over the seam of the wrap. This does a few things. 1. it helps seal the wrap from unraveling - this has not been a problem with arrowrap.com wraps, but I'm into over-building. 2. if my nocks rotate over time or if the indexing mark I make on the arrows wears off over time, I have the seam of the wrap as a permanent spine alignment mark, I can readjust my nocks to later. and 3. The least important reason of all is the lettering on my wraps is consistent from arrow to arrow and if I have set up my fletching jig correctly, the fletches don't cover the lettering and they all look exactly the same. This last one is mainly aesthetics but I know that all of my arrows are spine aligned exactly the same and if one looks off then I know something got knocked out of whack on my fletching jig. It's all very specific and likely overkill, but if I ever have one arrow that just refuses to group with the others, I can almost always find something squirrelly about that arrow that doesn't match the others just from looking at it. Thanks for the question and the support!
Too funny 😁. I'm hitting 55 this year and struggling with this as well. Good idea...may have to gibe it a try!
Let me know how you like it if you give it a try !
It’s not ridiculous it’s awesome I’m 65
If you pick one up, let me know how you like it.
I've been thinking about attaching a magnifying glass of some sort to my sight tape to help with that
I remember some sights offer it. Let me know what you figure out!
I'm 52. I can't see close to adjust my sight or far to see my target. I hate shooting with glasses on as it causes alignment issues with my peep and glare. They also cause fogging if I try and hunt with them. I ask my buddy if my sight is set where I want it at 3D shoots. My shoulders are a mess because I'm a carpenter, and I still ride snowboards and skateboards ( genX all the way). I now have lupus, and it's attacking my hands, so I can't shoot my handheld releases or my many traditional bows without a lot of pain. So, to answer your question, yes, I can relate to your problems. I like the monocle. I may have to get one. It might also help me see to tie fishing knots as that's another problem I have.
Yeah, bro I feel you. I’ll pour one out for my lost collection of Thrasher magazines you’ve now reminded me of. The monocle is advertised as fly fishing gear so sounds to me like you’re killing two birds with one with this stone.
I'm 54 have the exact same problems plus I'm blind in my left eye. This is an awesome product. I will be buying one been going to make the same video just about being old. I always hear people talking about the 10 year plan I don't have. 10 years left in my plan.lol Keep it up. I just gave you a subscribe.
Hahaha. 😂 You tha man! Let me know how you like it!
Wait till you hit 55. Ya ain’t seen nothing yet 😂😂
I guess I had that coming…🤣
I was laughing my a$$ off this whole video 😂
Glad you liked it! (Whether you were laughing AT me or WITH me… 🤣🤣)
Great content try sanlida dragon 10 pure carbon arrows 2 dozen for $80
Hey! Thanks for the heads up!! This sounds like a hell of a deal. I may buy some and do a build but I’m having trouble finding bare shafts. May buy 2 dozen and strip half of them. Could maybe do another budget build AND some testing on offset vs non…. Hmmm. Appreciate the kind words!!
Great content, and I love your arrow saw. I built something very similar.
Really appreciate it! Gonna keep trying to bring good stuff to the Everyman Archer!
The series of events that you went through with bend testing and then nock tuning through paper is almost exactly how I came to the conclusion it was a great way to start getting things lined up.
No kidding! I'm not gonna lie, while shooting through paper for what seemed like days I was thinking "This can't be right!" But once I had them all twisted around to where they were shooting right, I realized my mistake and changed my tune! Bend Test Confirmed!!
Did you shoot them?
I did…. Build video will drop tomorrow!
