In this DIY video, we look at rigging your SOF kayak with deck ropes/toggles and bungee. We also look at how to fit it inside with foam padding for comfort and better body/boat contact. Finally, we take the kayak out for a spin and do a wet-exit self rescue, some rolls and more.
Perfect dyeing

A few extra words and tips of advice for those seeking a perfect result when dyeing the Kayakskin. This in an "extra" to my original movies about covering a kayak, using Kaykskin.
Beautiful
You answered my question: once a year, lightly spot sand, lightly oil, rub and get out on the water! Thank you.
Thank you. Great video My 25 year old paddle had been touched up many times, but this fall I took the plunge and took the finish off down to the wood. I am going to use boiled linseed oil instead of spar varnish (its original finish). After the two or three coats (drying, lightly sanding, re-applying as you suggest), what do I need to do to maintain the paddle? Is the oiling enough to protect the wood for a summer of paddling fun. And you are right, it's all about getting out onto the water and looking around at this amazing miracle of life.
Thanks. It will remain protected for years that way. Just touch up the worn spots now and then. Actually once you have applied some good coats of oil, maintenance is not a big deal for years to come.
Fantastic video. Love the underwater shots... How did you achieve that?
Thanks :) I just dumped my gopro on the bottom of the lake :)
Beautiful video, Anders. Really like the view from below, with the blue sky tinted with the green of the water, and the frame of the qajaq in contrast. Very nice.
thanks :) me too. the colors, the light and the transperant kayak :)
Fantastic. Deserves a huge audience.
真美的水下 往上看獨木舟~❤
Thank you very much :)
Wonderful underwater camera perspective - great work and big thanks to you, Anders :-)
Thanks a lot :)
Such a well crafted video, beautifully show-casing paddle, kayak and paddler.
thanks :)
I drift away from kayaking, a tough experience with depression, than the getting better, then being a father and so on... life puts you in different situation and now is a while since the last time I paddled and rolled. This kind of videos are the ones who makes me want to give it another shot, a new one. Thank you.
:) great!
Дуже гарна робота! У Вас можливо замовити і відправити в Україну?
adsolutely, just drop me an e-mail. www.kajakkspesialisten.no holds my contact info. cheers!
I will never go back to a standard euro paddle...I shaped my first GP a few months ago from a a 2x4 piece of cedar- love it!
super. happy paddling :)
Hi - a big thank you! I copied your technique to sew the skin on my Cape Falcon Kayak’s F1 without needing the zig-zag lacing to pre-tension. The braided fishing line was also much better than doubled up nylon. Cheers!
Very happy to hear that :) happy paddling
Also - can you explain the finishing cut and stitch that you do after this method of tightening? You have quite a bit of fabric overlap on both sides of centreline. Thank you
Thanks for asking. You need to trim the edges and do the folding stitching that are explained in the #4 skinning video: ua-cam.com/video/xzOCmP-Ngbo/v-deo.html I get to it about 16 minutes into the video :)
This is fantastic. I was going to use the welting cord method for the deck seam but might try this instead. Any tips on getting a straight seam - in terms of cutting or sewing technique? Thank you
Hi :) since you stretch a varying amount of fabric, it's hard to make lines that will work. so I suggest just doing one stitch at the time, paying attention as you go along.
A beautiful video and wonderful craftsperson ship. Thank you
Thank you very much :)
Hi Anders. What is the comfortable cruising speed in the Baidarka style boat in your hands?
Hi :) Normally if I paddle alone, cruising speed is around 7-8 km/hour. with company and chatting possibly around 6.
Thanks for the prompt reply. That's not far off my Taran. I've only read about the skin on frame Aleutian baidarka but never paddled one. Incidentally applied second coat of tung oil to the made on Sunday. Thanks for a brilliant day. Any chance of making Aleutian style paddles next trip to Jersey? @@Norwegianwoodpaddles
@@NorwegianwoodpaddlesI assume you used an Aleutian style paddle?
@@sbean5707 yes. or greenland style
I just finished my first two paddles. As they say, many ways to skin a cat. I did one similar to your way (epoxy painted on the outside of the wood tip) but wasn't really happy with it. More robust than just spar varnish, but is there a better way? The second paddle I made some cuts while the wood was still square and flat (before cutting out the paddle shape or doing any thinning) with my table saw to make a "form" of sorts for the epoxy to fill. Inside this form I put a piece of fiberglass trimmed to fit, taped up the sides of the cuts, then filled it with deep pour epoxy (longest time for set and also very thin and runny, to let bubbles escape). I then cut out the shape of my paddle and then thinned it down to where the epoxy was. I am much happier with this way. You did well - that is a nice paddle.
oh yes, fiberglass is very tough ideed. a lot of extra work, though :) Happy paddling
Hi Anders! I have see-through Gorilla tejp and duct tejp wrapped around my water bottle. Also usually some surgical tape as well.
Good, interesting, presentation! However, a bit of extra camera-side lighting (in the shop) - to facilitate more detail - so we can see better. The windows, in behind, present too much back-lighting. Enjoyable & useful subject.

That boat is so skinny. Can’t wait to try a proper Greenland paddle. Been using a lendal cadence for a couple months now. Love the speed it provides but it destroys my shoulders on longer days.
Shoulder issues is often a good reason to try an Inuit style paddle. I'll make you one, just say when :)
great video and also the small video excerpts from the Inuit. Many greetings from Ralph from Germany
Thank you, Ralph
Great take 😊👍 Cool in black and white and random flashbacks 😊🇧🇻🎉
Thanks
That's a really great video. Thank you for uploading.
Thanks, Ito San. I will pass your comment to the maker (^_^)/
Hi, I just wondering if there's any alternative skin other than polyester and nylon, because I can't find any of those fabrics... is it ok to use thick canvas? Sof is just not a thing here in my country
Canvas is absolutely an alternative. Proofen worthy for decades. Where are you situated?
@@Norwegianwoodpaddles Indonesia
What about waterproofing.. is it okay to only use latex paint? Is it durable enough?
What foam are you using please?
closed cell foam
Thanks. What sizes of foam blocks do you find most useful? It's not cheap and I don't want to waste it.
mine are 45 mm thick. they are good, and can be glued together. thinner mattresses can also be glued together
Goon stroke
Tolles Boot geworden, toller Bau ! Schön dass dir so ein Boot perfekt gebaut hast !
Danke sehr :)
Man I wish I was there . Is there a type of skin on frame kayak that’s well suited to being in the water throughout the day? I’m trying to make it as accessible as possible for those that can’t lift.
I guess any sof kayak can do that.
@@Norwegianwoodpaddles ah sorry I had a typo in my original question - so these skin on frame kayaks are fine to be left in the water for 12+ hours a day throughout the spring and summer. Awesome :) I wasn’t sure how much taking it out of the water was important to longevity
That is no problem. my longest trip so far lasted 76 days with 8-10 hours of paddling every day. my skin on frame kayak was never dry @@hickorysocks2628
Very nice boats! 👍 How much does the SOF canoue weight?
The solo canoe i'm building now is 15 kilo. the double you see in the movie is around 18
"Have good day ❤😍🌹"
Thanks the same (^-^)/
Please comment on handling of the baidarka. Thank you.
It tracks nicely, yet, if you know how to handle a kayak, it's nice to take out in conditions and play. And then it's super fast :)
First make sure you’ve got 24, or more, G Clamps!!
How did you like the Koelan? I varnished my Cape Falcon F1 with Lechler 2part PU, but since I saw a Kajak that was painted with Koelan I think the next time I would give it a try despite the cost.
I like coelan a lot. I don't use it myself often because of by budget living, but the times I did it has impressed me. like my 2011 expedition round the Norway coast - my coelan coated skin kayak hardly had a scratch after 3000 km. of paddling
I have two paddles bought 4 years ago. A reinforced greenland paddle and an aleut touring paddle. They both are great each in their own way. When my girlfriend took up paddling and I told her to try anders paddle, she never wanted to paddle otherwise again then greenland way. Its so intuitive and light she said. It feels an extension of my own body. Yes it is great. Thanks Anders
Warms my heart to hear. Thank you and happy paddling <3
In Durham Kayak Club in the eighties we had an amazing friend called Lofty who made paddles for sea canoeing for £10 well happy days they were.
I have one of Anders' Greenland paddles, and it is SUPERB! I tried a carbon version, and it was completely different - it seemed to slip past the water with less control. Anders' feels very "kind" to the body and good technique has developed quite naturally. Thanks, Anders.
Happy to hear that :) And happy paddling
Very nice - Can you give me some more specific info about the white tips ? - The white epoxy , you use there - is it very thin epoxy with whit colou mixed in ? - And then just dip in the tip ?
many epoxies have color pigment you can add. I use a brush to apply. that means I can mix only 4 g. of epoxy, and it's enough for the paddle. dipping would mean a huge batch and lots of waste. you can also coat with clear epoxy and then paint it white. Floor paint or boat paint for instance.
Hard to believe you are not using power tools
for my normal production I also do. but people make these paddles in my classes in about 8 hours. not a big deal and only handtools
I tried your greenland paddle 2weeks ago, and it was like a revelation. Incredible paddle.
Hi Anders, Just come across this channel. Very pleased to confirm that the paddle I bought from you in August 2019 is still going strong! I've tried others on loan, but they are not a patch on yours. Thank you. PS The kayak is still with me too! SJ
thanks! I'm very pleased to hear that. happy paddling!
I LIKE that idea for a discrete loop on the gunwale! I am so going to do that.
Var får du tag på hampan Anders? Jag hittar bara syntetisk flätad hampa?
Västerbergs rebslageri. Men sist jeg bestilte hadde de problemer med å få lov å importere hamp fra Belarus :( Og måtte stanse sin produksjon
I do not see a pattern for a sea sock on your website. How can I order one? Thanks
absolutely, just e-mail me
Also wondering, what happens with the foot pegs with a seasock
nothing, really. they are still functional
What is the kayak design?
my own, based on general original greenlandic principles
Put a piece of string under the staples, so then easily removed
Det er vakre What is the design
Excellent. I am surprised you don’t have lines fitted to the frame to secure the toe end in place.
thanks :) with the right type of fabric that is not nessecary
