    Hi! I know this video is pretty old and I don’t know if anyone will reply, but I found it very helpful. I start college tomorrow with a major in biology. I’ve always liked it, and I took AP bio in high school and did very well. I want to go on to med school also, but I’m concerned slightly about how I will manage to get organic chem, physics, biochem, biology, and general chem all within 3 years (to prepare for MCAT) without completely overwhelming myself and screwing over my GPA. Do you have any tips? How did you manage all these challenging courses?

    • @stripesandstethoscopes6422
      @stripesandstethoscopes6422 6 років тому

      Hello! Congrats on starting college! I hope your first couple weeks have been going well so far! So, I totally hear your concerns there. For me, it was definitely pretty overwhelming at times and if I could go back and give myself advice for how to manage everything, I'd say the best thing is to organize yourself as best as you can and if possible, try to take them at different times. I was really fortunate in the fact that I rocked my A.P. bio exam and I was able to get a ton of credit for it so I was pretty much excused from taking gen bio 1&2 (with the labs!), but I know one of my friends had to take both gen bio and gen chem her freshman year. My sophomore year was my orgo year, and then my Junior year I did physics. I took biochem my senior year because I was still in the camp of people that took the old MCAT and our exam didn't have biochem on it. If I had to make a suggestion of when to take it I'd say along with physics your Junior year (if you only have to do one semester, take it in the fall so you can focus on your MCAT in the spring) as organic chemistry tends to be way more time intensive than physics (at least for me it was). You will have seen all of orgo by that point and it's different enough from physics that studying them at the same time should be okay. I'm not going to lie, it can get tough, but I tried my best to be very organized and keep on top of things (most of the time...procrastination does happen) and that is what helped me make it through it. But, it's definitely doable. Try your hardest to keep up with the material as you go and if you don't get something, don't be afraid to ask for help (office hours exist for a reason)! Overall, I say go and try to do your best and you'll be okay. I hope that helps:)

    Many people are saying a bio major is worthless. What about a person like me who is into veterinary medicine? Should i aim for a bio major for vet school? And in your bio major, do you take anatomy?

    • @stripesandstethoscopes6422
      @stripesandstethoscopes6422 6 років тому

      Hi! For a person like you, biology would be super helpful. Many of the professional schools are very heavily based on biology and it will help you. I'm currently in medical school and it has helped me a ton. I know many of my friends that are currently in Vet school were bio majors, and it has also helped them. As far as anatomy class, if your school offers an anatomy course, definitely take it! I took anatomy my junior year and even though it wasn't at medical school level, it helped me at least have a baseline for when I did it again in medical school.

And if i am not able to go to med school I wanna work with that degree. So do you think all this effort and struggle in bio is worth it if i am going to end up with just bio bachleors degree. I am so puzzled what do you suggest? and i need you advice. Looking forward for you responce.

      Amira Abdulkadir Hi, though not worthless, I see the bio major mainly as a tool to getting into a career in health but again, there are other things you can do with this major. I think a great in between for someone who wants to go into the medical field with their bio degree, but doesn't want to spend an extra 6+ years of graduate school to become a doctor should look into Physician Assistant school. Though they are not paid as much as doctors (believe the medians salary is around $94,000/year), PAs graduate school in usually around 26 months, and then you are ready to go to work! On top of that, there are so many sub fields in the PA field, and it is much easier to switch that field should you change your mind later on. Compare this to being a doctor, where once you choose your specialty you are kind of bound to it, otherwise you'll have to go back to do another residency before switching a lot of the times. I am by no means an expert on this topic, but have been researching a good bit because I myself decided on the pre PA track after switching from engineering. Good luck with ever you choose, and I hope this helps!

    • @lucedelsole1504
      @lucedelsole1504 7 років тому

      It honestly depends on what you'd like to do. I was a psych minor, because I really liked psychology, but I was able to get double credit for some of my bio classes, so that worked out really well for me. I know people that minored/double majored in many different things along with bio. It just depends on what you plan to do with it.

    im going to enroll into college for the first time and im nervous about it, because ive been out of school for about 2 years. Ive been indecisive about my major and i just thought bio would be an interesting one. Im not going to attend a UC or a university of some sort so im still clueless about that since it will be from a community college. Do you have any idea about a community college bio major?

    • @nicholaswarner1143
      @nicholaswarner1143 6 років тому

      Molly De La Cruz I'm sure you have already enrolled, but in case haven't yet or to anyone else with the same question, here's my take. I too was out of school a year and a half before deciding to go to college. I chose community college for a few reasons. The first being, my HS grades were crap so there was no way I was getting into a university. The second, community college is MUCH cheaper. Going to community college is the better decisions anyway, because you'll only go for two years to achieve your associates there. After that, you'll apply to a university to achieve your bachelors (at minimum), BUT upon graduation your diploma will says you graduated from sed university, not the community college. So going to community college first will still enable you to graduate with a diploma from a university, yet you will have saved yourself TONS of money in the process. This being said, you need to be cautious of attending community college first. What I mean is, some credits that you take there may not transfer over to whatever university you are planning on attending in the future, or they may only transfer as GEN EDs. This can get a bit frustrating, and if you are not smart, could waste tons of money and time taking classes that won't even be accepted by your planned university. Luckily, with a little smarts, and a transfer tool you can figure out how each university will accept (if at all) your credits from your community college. You'll go online and type in "(Planned university you plan on attending in the future) transfer tool". Then you will put in whatever community college you are attending. After this, you can begin inserting the classes you plan on taking at the community school, and the transfer tool with show you how the university you plan on going to weighs those credits. Another thing to keep in mind is, once you have decided on a major and what university you want to attend after community college, go on the universities website and see what their requirements are for attending your planned degree, NOT what your community college recommends. Iv found that community colleges like to slip in unneeded classes that do little for your major. Again, this step is crucial, if this is not done then you could waste tons of time and money. Overall, it is a personal decision. I am biased towards first attending community college. I think it is the over more economic route which is very important when being a college student. You don't want to be like everyone else complaining about the crap ton of debt accrued because of college. There's a smart way, and a dumb way to go about your post education and too many go about it the dumb way and then wonder why they have graduated with all this debt (partially unavoidable if your future job requires many years of schooling like a physician). Good luck to all, and I hope this helped!

      Denisha Mclaughlin- Thomas Don't major in biology it pretty much worthless. You got to be careful 90% of college degrees are worthless. Less then 10% of pre-meds actually make it to medical school. Here is the secret you can major in anything and be pre-med. Major in Engineering/Computer Science if things don't work out you have a useful degree.

    • @SteelRainz1
      @SteelRainz1 7 років тому

      8 months late but I'll still let you know. Many jobs ranging from zoology to a lab tech are available to biology majors. I'd recommend choosing a different major if you're going to medical school though so you stand out. Try biochemistry. You get both biology and chemistry; it's also not the same thing they've seen a thousand times. You'll stand out more. There are jobs for biology majors but you'd need to go further than a BS to find a good one.

    • @stripesandstethoscopes6422

      Hello! I personally didn't take Organic Chem and Physics together because at our school (and most other schools) Organic chemistry is notorious for being difficult, so I wanted to avoid taking it with one of the other major sciences. If you can avoid taking a full schedule with Organic Chem, I would do that, but otherwise I took like two other science classes at the same time and it was fine.

      Hello! There are a ton of different things that you can do with a biology major, but it really depends on what you personally find interesting. At my university, people typically got a bio major as a starting point to go on to professional school (i.e. Medical, Pharmacy, or Dentistry school), but a lot of other people were interested in going into research or working in a lab. Others took it and went on to do engineering and such. I'd say the best thing to do is look at what you like the most and go from there in picking a career, but teaching is only one of the many things you can do with it! I hope that helps!
