How to Play The Long Run (Eagles) on Guitar
Love Collective Soul - thanks for bringing Shine to the party!
I'd like video of barre chord songs with songs people love. Being that video doesn't exist leads me to believe barre chords aren't as important as instructors lead you to believe. Especially if your goal isn't to be a "working musician " and just play your favorite songs. Learn the b's & f's. The rest isn't necessary
Great! What settings ( at Chorus, delay, reverb, etc ) do you use for Time Stand Still ?
Don't know the band, (I probably lived under a stone too long, LOL) but awesomely performed! Great tutorial Tony!! Bert
thanks Bert! it was a very big song back in the grunge era
Beautiful tone
thanks!
Are you tunnered your guitar on F# ? Or you're using some pedal ?
soooo, yes, I have a Kemper Profile where I can transpose up a whole step. Alex, did the song tuned up a whole step on his guitar using somewhat lighter strings
Very cool..... Love it........
Great Eagles song and great tutorial TOny!!!
It's more than a bit of a stretch to call any of those three examples as solos. They're all just breakdowns where the guitar is prominent but Lerxst is certainly not soloing at any point.
I disagree to a point. That argument could be made for Time Stand Still which I acknowledge in the video. However, Far Cry and Driven are definitely considered solos.
Alex Lifeson is one of my guitar heroes! Great tutorial Tony! Bert
thanks Bert!
Even I can play these! 😂
Uh, yeah Greg, I think you can! LOL
WOW, awesomely performed and great guitar tutorial! Well done Tony! Bert
Thanks so much Bert!!
My favorite song in my whole musical universe! The first time I heard it was live on their A Fairwell To Kings tour. They were all note-fir-note perfect! Xanadu was their finally which turned me from someone who really liked Rush into a rabid fan! Thank you for this!
Alex Lifeson was devious and crafty when he composed the guitar parts for Big Money! For years I had no idea why my harmonics never sounded right when I attempted to play this song. It wasn't until I read an interview of him in the Guitar Player magazine (probably from 1987) that I finally found out that Alex swapped out his standard guitar string gauges for extra thin ones and tuned the instrument to F#, a full step above the standard E. The thinner strings also reduced the tension on his guitar's neck, making them easier to bend and harder to break. While it's possible to transpose my guitar a step up using the regular gauge strings, doing so will also mess up my tremolo settings. So I never learned to play Big Money the way Lifeson does. I've noticed that whenever Rush plays this track live, Alex would always play a different guitar just for Big Money and switch back to his previous guitar for their subsequent song. I'm not sure what other Rush songs requires the guitar to be tuned to F# but prior to the Power Windows album, he mostly if not always used the standard E tuning. Whenever Lifeson changes to a different guitar onstage, it's for a specific reason - either the song calls for that guitar's tone or tuning, or he's accidentally broken a string or whacked the instrument out of tune. 😀
As far as I know, this is the only song he tuned up for. In later albums he did explore different open tunings
@@TheSixStringCorner Thank you for dissecting and breaking down Big Money. 😎👍🏼🙂 Apart from this fine tutorial video that you've painstakingly had done in this episode, I've watched only one other UA-camr who played this song note for note. Apparently he had also figured out the F# transposition and had also likely used lighter strings just like Alex did. I wish the web and UA-cam had existed back in 1987 as the only way to figure out how to play guitar parts (at the time) was to rely on information from guitar magazines. Unfortunately, I don't remember if Lifeson had specified the exact string gauges he had used for playing that song, but they're definitely thinner strings for his G, B and high E strings. I've watched Alex give tutorials how he plays "Limelight" and "Spirit of The Radio" on YT, but he's never shown, let alone being asked by interviewers how he plays Big Money. On an unrelated note, David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) once revealed in a magazine interview that the arpeggiated intro to the iconic song "Hey You" from The Wall album was accomplished by simply replacing his acoustic guitar strings with thinner ones and tuning them a full octave higher. Gilmour didn't use a capo for the acoustic guitar parts, he merely simplified things by tuning his guitar one octave up using extra light gauge strings. He had also mentioned his amusement whenever fans approached him in guitar stores, showing him how _they_ played Hey You, with their fingers in various contorted positions, lol. 🤣 Great musicians always think outside the box and refuse to limited by the constraints that they had been taught with.
great job, man. I tried before, but I find this solo very odd and I couldn't play as good as you
I love the way Lifeson plays those chords.... Great tutorial Tony!
thanks Bert! understanding little of how Alex approaches songs really can help trying to learn Rush songs on guitar
Too fast of a lesson 😊
Ha! Yeah, I should slow things down sometimes! Well, at least You Tube can slow it down for ya. lol
It's the " lifeson" chord, he's one of only two guitarists I'm aware of that have chords " named " for them, the other is Hendrix.
yep, I misspoke. It is indeed "The Lifeson Chord"
This is great I am trying to learn to solo to jam the song with my friends and seeing it being played makes it super easier to learn❤❤❤!!!!!!! RUSH RULES!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
glad you liked it, thanks!
Good stuff. One thing I would mention, and I only see a few Rush tributes play it correctly...The riff at 0:57.... Alex plays the 2nd recall portion with 8 notes, not 3 sustained like you do. Go listen to the original.. or any live version... you will hear it if you listen close enough... It goes x x x y y y x x x yyy yyy yy.
Really good SOLID advice,,,youre a good teacher,,,,😎
thanks trailboss!
That is a fun, badass classic riff,,,no one can keep from stompin along,,,impossible,,,THANKS!!!😎
thanks, it's a blast to play!
Sounds great
Interesting you went down to the F - none of the popular tabs do that - saw that Dean Wolf also does it - useful learning !
Yeah, for a time, years ago, I never did that F. Then I joined a Rush tribute band and found out it was there! lol
@@TheSixStringCorner it’s amazing the little details you pick up every time you revisit a Rush song - always another nuance in how he plays
@@eoinjennings519 oh man, I have stories with so many of their songs about discovering things I was doing wrong!
Thanks !!! Very good
Sounds great!
thanks Greg!
Loving the rush lessons, is there any chance you could do a lesson for the song Ghost of a chance?
possibly!
WOW this is awesome Tony!!!
@@BadassBrutusGuitar thanks Bert! Glad to be back
Absolutely excellent....I'm really interested in Alex's approach to guitar on this specific album.. (Signals)..thanks so much!
thanks Dave!
Straight to the point! ✊ Tks
thanks Antonio! Glad you liked it
Best lesson out I like your playing
thanks so much Josh! took a break for a while but more vids aree coming!

Oops! Not sure how that happened. TAB chart is there now. So sorry!

WOW..... this sounds awesome Tony 👍👍😎😎
thanks Bert!!
Awesome job! My favorite Rush album ❤
thanks Greg! Yep, mine too. My first Rush concert was during the Hemispheres tour at the Ampitheater
Thank you, keep the rush coming ❤
you are welcome! I definitely will
Tempo is too fast
Very nicely done. I love it. This is one of the most classy and tasteful guitar solos - in conjunction with the rest of the song, that I have ever heard. I still get a rush (-get it?).
i know, right? deceptively great!
that fingernail injury hurts me
the finger was cut off at the knuckle when i was a kid before i played guitar. after it got sewed back on and healed, that's how the nail grew back
@@TheSixStringCorner i have a couple of these too, just hurts to look at them, i mashed my thumb with a 4lb maul full swing once, the nail consistantly grows weird and breaks off.
@@builderman912 yikes! its funny for me in that the finger actually ended up more flexible which was good for guitar! my nail has always stayed on
My dad loves this song and I was so happy that I learned it from him! Thanks man. Great lesson.
thanks! its so fun to play
Sounds great Tony!
thanks Bert!
What recording device? Which effects ?
I was using the Kemper profiler with a Marshall Town and Country amp (Its one of the amps Alex used then). some overdrive, a little delay and reverb with a splash of his signature chorus sound. That's about it. I just recorded the audio track on Garage Band.
Maybe someday. Damn fine rendition of it.
thanks!
❤❤❤ Gracias
you are welcome, glad you enjoyed it
Great lesson on a classic Eagles tune.
thanks Rick, yeah it's a fun one to play for sure!
what was Walshs finger exercise became timeless classic
I know, right? one of my favorite cruising songs back in the day
What gear you use to produce this awesome Rush sound Tony?
Hey there Bert! I'm using a Kemper profiler to start. the amp profile is the HiWatt D103 that Alex used at the time. For effects the Boss CE-1 chorus is the main effect. there is some reverb and delay here and there but nothing major (except some extra reverb in the cleaner parts). Also added some extra distortion in one of the sections (otherwise its all amp distortion)
I think this is the best I've seen Prelude played by anyone online
@@robertsims6718 thank you Robert!
Thanks for the amazing lesson, if possible 2112 would be awesome!!
Thanks! Yeah, it's something on my list - after I finish Hemispheres. I do have Temples of Syrinx on my channel.
Awesome dude! I finally found someone that knows the few missing parts of this song I struggled with. Helped me a bunch and I thank you. Your playing is very good and I like the volume pedal for the intro versus using the volume to swell up and down with! Saw Rush six times and still couldn't figure out what Lifeson was doing. Well Done Sir!
Thank you Joe! Glad I could have been of some help
