My passion and purpose is to show guitar players how they can be set free to play what they feel in the moment. To be creative musicians. Not simply memorize other people's riffs.
I continue to work on the cool tools you'll see presented here over the coming weeks and months as they continue to grow and become more and more powerful. I believe that when an aspiring guitarist is able to look down at their guitar neck and visualize the basic framework of music as applied to the fretboard, it can trigger a creative explosion of new ideas.
All you need to be able to do that is an uncomplicated way of thinking about music and a clearly defined way of applying that to your guitar. The tools I'm building will continue to improve and become the way to an uncomplicated yet powerful way of seeing countless possibilities.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching!
The one key piano tripped me out
Haha! Awesome.
Fantastic leason! It's one thing to know how the strings are tuned but knowing why really helps us understand the logic of it. Thank you!
Thanks for leaving this comment. You nailed it!
😂😂😂I just joined this site. This dashboard doesn’t look anything like the dashboard that I have and I joined the premium I paid. I don’t have a free account. There’s no search engine to find anything now I can’t even log back in because it won’t accept the password that I set up they keep telling me that they sent me a link but no link shows up to change my password. I’m gonna call my credit card company and cancel this immediately. This is a quit wasting my time.
So the problem I see right out of the gate is your sitting. You stand on stage and that changes EVERYTHING
You’re absolutely right if your guitar is positioned differently when sitting than when you’re standing. But the principles are the same. For me, I generally adjust my strap so it’s the same whether I’m sitting or standing. The lower the guitar is, the more you have to bend your wrist to play some of these hard to play chords which can lead to wrist damage. But, just like hands, everyone’s arms and wrists are a little different. The main thing is to find a way to hold the guitar and position your wrist and hand so it doesn’t cause you to lose the ability to play some chords or single note stuff.
We all do things that complement or complicate our lives. Your story is fascinating to a retired chiropractor with bad thumbs and a body ravaged by auto accidents. Always planed to retire and learn guitar. Mega boxes of tidbits from many sources you came up and I’m interested. It appears you can switch off some of the dots, for me this is a visual nightmare to see all the possible notes one could play. Following someone who tries to develop focus in one area, it has helped me. You popped up at 7:30 am when looking for something else. A sign from the Creator of the Universe or a UA-cam algorithm I can work with both.
I appreciate your perspective and your kind words. It's amazing how life takes us on journeys. I heard someone say this: * Everybody has a story * Everybody's story matters * Nobody gets the story they planned on
I can play the F chord( well named indeed) better if I barr it. Fuller sound and easier to, ie, not as difficult.
Sure! Once you've mastered barring it definitely makes playing those major chords easier. Barre chords definitely give a big, full sound. Thanks for the comment!
@@guitarcreative well thanks for the response. If I can fake Barr chords on an acoustic anyone can . On a good day I can even fake the A form( light gauge strings) . Of course though, I muffle the hi E string because my ring finger doesn’t bend. I once tried the A major fingering- impossible. My fingers are close to being congenitally deformed as to flexibility. Kinda proud of it. On my non fretting hand I can’t even touch my thumb to my pinky. As for the Vulcan live long and prosper sign, got any Elmer’s glue.?
Haha! Good ole Elmer’s.
@@guitarcreative You probably won’t be surprised when I tell U I can’t curl my tongue either. Klingon for your toast dude.
This is a lot of information but so great the wrist and hand placement is something I have a lot of trouble with. I would love to learn scales and improve hand and wrist positioning on chords. Thanks for sharing this it’s a real help
Glad it helped. Yea, sometimes getting all this at first can feel like you're running in sand. Staying relaxed is the ultimate goal in all this. The reason I came up with these checkpoints and the focus on counter-rotation of your wrist was to give you something to focus on while you're practicing that can guide you toward making all this second nature. I did a PDF that talks about getting the most out of your practice time and it's based on neuroscience. Maybe I should do a video of that. wdyt?
@@guitarcreative good idea
@@marccracchiolo4935 I like that you gave me the impression we need to do what we can and not like some”you must do it dis way” instructor. I’m sure Keith Richards would be criticized for his hand placements. He has done OK as a guitarist
Excellent and inspiring; giving your tips a try. Hey, respect to you for that beautiful Fender with the smart mods. Zero fret and locking tuners, yes? Cheers from rainy WA state!
Thanks so much. Hope it helps! That's a Jeff Beck signature series Strat. One of the reasons I got it was because of all those cool mods. The noiseless pickups are awesome. I've got a custom class-A, point-to-point tube amp my brother built for me that I love to use on gigs. You can see it stacked out of the way in the video to my right - head and cab are American Cedar. I can plug into it, turn it up and take my hands off the strings and it's pretty doggone quiet. Awesome to hear from someone in WA! For several years I worked remotely as a Senior SDE for Rhapsody (now Napster), which is located in Seattle. I had to go there several time a year.
@@guitarcreativeMy first video of yours, I like what I’ve seen. My thumbs are messed up and you have given me hope to continue. Retired chiropractor, that’s why the thumb’s problems, I can play F chord and others but I have no endurance but I do have pain. We “older guys” gotta stick together. Will be subscribing and checking out your scale-mate concept. Thanks.
Man, having thumb pain is no fun at all. Hate to hear that. I’m so glad it may have helped. And yes, we old guys do have to stick together! Thanks so much for the kind comments. Really appreciate it.
Great work. Clear, specific. The humor 😂makes it even easier
Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it. Hope it helped!
you deserve a million subscribers!!! thanks for the lesson.
Thanks, that's so kind of you! I’m glad it helped!!
I do play the A chord like you .Similar to a D7 shape !!!!!!!!!Thank you for your super tips.
Hey, you’re right! It IS similar to a D7 shape! Just squished into the same fret. Hope these lessons help and thanks a million for the comments.
You're very welcome! Glad it’s helpful!!
Thank you ever so much for this approach .Great and 100& useful .
You're very welcome! Glad it was useful! Thank YOU for the comment!
Hi. Which NUT are you using on your Strat?
Hi, @wbresgen. It's the LSR Roller Nut - www.fender.com/en-US/parts/electric-guitar-parts/string-guides-nuts/lsr-roller-nut/0990812000.html

In a previous video (ua-cam.com/video/BzpFkizbZ4c/v-deo.html) on your TOOLS page, you showed a dropdown menu containing a SCALE BUILDER, which looked informative. However, I can't find it now. Has that been removed?
Hi, @danbromberg. So sorry for the confusion. It was renamed to Scale Mate. The thing that's tough about UA-cam is you can't update a video after it's been pushed up. I added several new features to Riff Lab like being able to save riffs that were screaming for a user account. To access all the tools you just need a free user account.
Great chord selection !!
Thanks, @backinbay! Glad you liked it and thanks for the comment!
great video, tyy
Thanks for the comment. Really appreciate it and glad it helped.
thanks!!
Hope it helps!
This is a real workout
Yea, if you're not familiar with some of those chord shapes it can get a little hairy! I'm working on a video right now that shows 3 simple steps to find the perfect hand position for any chord. Let me know if there's anything else that might help! Thanks for the comments.
Hey that's a good idea 💡
Glad you liked it! Looking at a fretboard diagram where you can see the scale notes you can come up with all kinds of combinations.
Sounds good 😊
Thanks! Hope it helps!
Fantástico maestro !
Muchas gracias!
Sounds awful
Oh well. Can’t win ‘em all.
Dude. Thank you. Wowwwwww.
Thanks for the comments. I’m so glad it helped you. By the way, for some reason this comment just now showed up for me. Thanks again.
Damn
Hope it helped!
This is one of the funnest to play little minor jazz riffs that Riff Lab has come up with!
Thanks for this very helpful lesson!
Glad it helped, @Phoboss32 Thanks for the comment!
This is very cool. Been right there in front of my face this whole time. Man I ❤ guitar. Thanks
Thanks so much for the awesome comment! It’s being able to look down at the scale note patterns on the fretboard that surround the chord. That really sets you free to get super creative with your playing!
Did you see this one? Just pushed it up a couple of days ago. ua-cam.com/users/shortsixG1mCLDuIU?si=Fdqni38cQ1bE09ac
I did this video as a how-to for the Interval Madness game. I really need to do a lesson series on intervals!
Once I started learning where a few of the notes are up the fretboard, and then learned the distances between each note (in frets) the surrounding notes started becoming quickly recognizable until I could call out any note. Every note relates to other notes!
I used to try to tune my guitar to a chord thinking it would be the best way to get it in tune. Boy was I wrong!
Thank you for checking this out. I edited this short from a section of this lesson: ua-cam.com/video/riNKpkEZ9Lo/v-deo.html I really hope these short little lessons are helpful! Please leave a comment.
I pulled this from another long form lesson. I hope you get some use out of this little nugget!
I've actually seen a one string guitar somewhere. There's a guy who collects odd instruments who had one that was made hundreds of years ago. I came up with this concept by one day forcing myself to play everything on 1 string as more of an exercise. That's what made me think about how all this came to be and it is very smart.
amazing
Thanks so much!
I have heard this while being on hold during phone calls
There are probably 1,000 recordings of this song out there so you probably have.
Hi, I'm interested in your backing track for The Girl from Ipanema. You mentioned there was a link for this but I can't find it. Thanks, Bill Scott
Hi, @Billscottguitar123. Sorry for the confusion. The link is at the bottom of the description for the Girl From Ipanema video. It's a zip file that has the MP3 and the PDF chord chart in it but I've also pasted it here: maxtracks1.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/guitarcreative/lesson-assets/chord-melodies/girl-from-ipanema.zip
@@guitarcreative Thank you, I saw it right after I wrote you.
Haha! I’ve done that myself plenty of times.
Wow... Love the presentation... Very clear. Subscribed
Thanks, @bosatsu76!
Great rendition of this classic. And sweet tone from your Guild. Hoping to learn it.
Thanks so much! I bet you’ll have it mastered in no time. And yea, I love that guitar. I’m lovin the flatwounds on it.
Great video. I’m subscribed 👍
Hey, @colink4823 thanks for subscribing! Glad you liked the lesson.
Awesome lesson. The software seems very useful and well thought out. I will definitely subscribe. I have been using other tools like Guitar Pro and Neck Diagrams but this software seems easier and quicker to use for learning purposes. Great work. Thank you.
Hey, @edcostav, thanks so much for the kind comments and thanks for subscribing! Really appreciate it. I've been working on (improving) the tools so they look a little different and the main menu has changed too. You get to the page shown in the video by going to ONLINE TOOLS > RIFF LAB SUITE > KEY WEAVER.
How much does it cost?
Right now a paid membership is $17/year. But there is also a free account that just has a few limitations like how many riffs you can save.
@@guitarcreative Cool! Thanks!
You bet @johnandkayninmon! Thanks for checking it out!
Nice Carvel !
Thanks, Gary!
Great video! Will be there new lessons?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I’ve been working on the guitar tools at the website and am almost finished with the new versions. I plan to start putting up some short lessons next. Thanks again!

Thanks, Gary! Would love to visit next time I’m up that way.
Great tool!
Thanks! As I get feedback from users I'll try to keep making it better and more useful.
I'm back, and once again, I got some things that I missed the first time.
It's me again! You have a GREAT Teaching Style. I ALWAYS get something good from EVERY one of your videos. btw, my favorite chords of all are the "Demented" and the "Demolished"... that's how they come out, sometimes, when I play them, anyway. lol
