I played two hands against Belladonna in a morning side-game at the Chicago Nationals in 1971. He and I were both earning some money. His partner was Jaqueline du Pont of the chemicals family nothing untoward happened.. I played a match against Garozzo - de Falco, Lauria - Mosca, Duboin - Vivaldi, in 1983. We lost by 8 imps. Pietro Forquet used to earn some money playing pairs with Omar Sharif in London events. I played them several times. I also remember Tim Bolshaw.

At match points and maybe even teams, south needs to DOUBLE. This is down 1 off the top and probably down 2 if South begins with 3 rounds of hearts. If he starts with the Qd, he can play 3 hearts at tricks 2-4. The point here is that we know east is out of line.because he did not double.to begin with. Sure, this will backfire on occasion, but we cannot let juicy 200 and 500 scores go away. If East really just has to bid, start with 1H and then shut up. If partner can raise, this will be quite a nice dummy.despit the low point count. that 5th trump makes a BIG difference if you wind up playing the hand. Turn a heart into some other suit and this drek is a pass at all stages of this auctions. As for the play of the hand.... This is trivial and as long as spades break, 9 tricks are child's play, but that in no way excuses South from being so timid.
