The Advocacy for Americans' Right to Vote
In New York State, people can vote while incarcerated for a misdemeanor or while on probation. As of May 2021, all New Yorkers convicted for a felony have their voting rights immediately and automatically restored upon release from prison, whether or not they are on parole.
With the election quickly approaching, voting laws in states nationwide continue to prevent millions of Americans with conviction records from participating. For instance, before December, 2019, Kentucky was one of just two states to permanently prohibit voters with prior felonies from exercising their right to vote. To rectify this, various reforms have been implemented to ensure that everyone has that right restored, but the work isn't finished yet.
In this episode, two voting advocates will focus on these efforts in their states and others.
Bonifacio Aleman, a lead organizer at Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, speaks about campaigning for the Governor’s executive order that restored voting rights to people with felony convictions in the state of Kentucky. At the same time, Dana Vickers Shelley, executive director of the ACLU of Maryland, discusses how denying the right to vote is rooted in a deeply racist system.

The Case for System Reforms to Reduce Youth Incarceration
Переглядів 165Місяць тому
Compelling research finds that incarcerating or detaining young people is not necessary or effective. Rather, removing young people from their homes, schools, and communities, and placing them in institutions increases the likelihood that youth will return to the justice system and reduces young people's future success and wellbeing. Incarceration also exposes many youth to abuse. A recent repo...

Raise the Gate: The Case for Cash Assistance for People Leaving Incarceration
Переглядів 892 місяці тому
The period immediately following release from prison is a time of intense vulnerability for far too many people who are otherwise ready to start rebuilding their lives. The arrest of a parent can be traumatic for many children. The removal of a mother or father from a child’s life forces that child to confront emotional, social, and economic consequences that may trigger behavior problems, poor outcomes in school, and a disruption or severance of the relationship with the incarcerated parent that may persist even after the parent is released from prison. This ...

How Mandatory Minimums Perpetuate Mass Incarceration & What To Do About It
Переглядів 1385 місяців тому
There is widespread evidence that mandatory minimum sentences produce substantial harm with no overall benefit to crime control, according to a recent report by The Sentencing Project (TSP). Mandatory minimums are legal provisions in each state and the federal government that require a specific minimum prison term for certain crimes, regardless of individual circumstances. Determined by lawmake...
Correction: It's Time to Rethink Parole in the Age of Mass Incarceration
Переглядів 3086 місяців тому
The United States alone locks up a quarter of the world’s incarcerated people. And yet, apart from clichés - “paying a debt to society” … “you do the crime, you do the time” - there is little sense collectively in America regarding what constitutes retribution or atonement. We don’t actually know why we punish. In his investigation into the crisis of the American criminal justice system, author...

In November, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that could make as many as two million people eligible to have their criminal records sealed. Under the so-called "Clean Slate Act," people who complete their sentences and remain out of trouble for a set period three years for misdemeanors, eight for eligible felonies will have their convictions sealed. New York is now one of a doz...
An Insidious Form of Slavery Still Exists
Переглядів 6099 місяців тому
The 13th Amendment to the Constitution ended chattel slavery, but with an insidious exception: "as a punishment for a crime." This loophole has allowed states to build prison systems so dependent on human exploitation and degradation that it is akin to modern-day slavery. The organization 13th Forward is a legislative coalition of advocates, grassroots organizations, and impacted people working...

Wonderful.
It's another way for slavery to still exist and keep somebody in a job. Think about it. about it..
You are speaking 🗣️ correctly. It's another form of "cotton".
Thanks for sending me a reminder text
I liked the one white guy in your diverse art festival. :) BTW: Look up Socrates's writings; you will find some contradictions to your lyrics.
FYAH!!!!!
A lot of power on that stage!
It's the power of MANY! :)
Talent and resiliency! Amazing people
Resilient against what? Doesn't seem like there was any need for resilience. :)

This is such a vital topic!! Thank you so much for having the brilliant folks from TLC & LAS here to discuss during #PrideMonth. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
you guys are kidding right ? This was never on the tv news and why? And kids ? Really ? Of course people have overcome solitary and been successful writers and trump did this cause the jails stuff wouldn’t have done this , they’re not that cruel and don’t mind the effort to help the prisoners as much as they can to survive with a somewhat livable spin and why does the internet say we have 80,000 hotel rooms vacant every nite every nite the solitary folks could be in the hotels and going to the grocery store and working in the community , why is it the numbers match , that’s insanely impossible and their gonna need transportation , are you guys fucking with me , cause I don’t understand why this is happening , do you cause your not saying anything about it , and we have empty apts all over the place so the homeless can get of the streets and live in style as the solitary folks adjust gradually to not being confined like a veal calve anymore , its seem easy enough , ill call trump tower and the local police , they may not be aware of this
The day of the rope
This contains so much doublethink and promotion of dangerous and dis-abling victim mentality. Also s*x work isn't - yet - a protected characteristic in US.
"Life-saving gender affirming medical care"? People involved with the justice system have enough to deal with without being lied to by these people.
Unnecessary.
Love It!!👏👌🙌
Thank you
I just got out of jail and I need help asap!

Inmates who are put into so called solitary, are put their because of their own actions. They are violent inmates who even in prison, refuse to follow rules and regulations put in place to keep staff and inmates alike safe.
If you see this doc it’s gonna take 2 hours and 19 minutes lol

A good discussion
Smh see you still haven't got your teeth fixed vilma😂😅😢lmao😂😂😂😂
Been Listening to BBC program an hour ago. About The Fortune Society in the USA. I think it's still running about an ho has made it after being incarcerated. Good programs for Africa too - to help people coming from prisons. Regards.
AND THIS WILL DO NOTHIG FOR HOMELESSNESS IN NEW YORK
I have a question? What about a women who has transitioned and now identifies as a man, take hormone treatments, chest surgery, looks just like the average Joe regular male and married to a women. This trans man throughout the course of his life has fought for his right to be acknowledged and treated as a man, uses the men's room in public places and even individuals in his work space have had disciplinary action taken against them for not using the correct pronouns for him. They perform a criminal act and sentenced to prison, shouldn't they go to a men's prison?
There is no such thing as "Latin x" people. Lost me as soon as she let that crap come out of her mouth. Most Latinos and Hispanics have no idea what that made-up white liberal politically term even means. And the rest of us hate it! It disregards our heritage, our culture, and our language. Start getting this term out of your mouths. We are Hispanic, we are Latino, we are Spanish, we South American, we are Central American, we are Carribean, we are Mexican. Stop making stupid shit up in your over-privileged ivory university tours!
These people need mental help. It costs non-criminal people huge money to pay for these individuals meals, healthcare, etc. I did not put them in prison, they honestly should be happy that they have free food and shelter. This is truly pathetic. They should not be comfortable in prison, it’s supposed to be a punishment. They behaved criminally, not me. They should be happy they aren’t prisoners in other countries, where they are sometimes used for cheap organ donations. It’s simple, don’t rob, rape, or murder people.
These people? Who are you referring to? Last time I checked, each of us are humans. Not taking away from what crimes were committed. Yet responsible and fair treatment is highly lacking within the prison system. So much so that men and women are being abused, attacked and murdered by those wearing Blue. From your comment I would guess that you are okay with unfair and criminal actions done towards men in women within the prison system. Am I correct?? If not, please clarify your position.
