Review 85: FATE Adversary Toolkit (FATE)
A "review" shouldn't appear to be your first time opening the books.
Show the book! I can't see anything but he table.
Great review! Hesitating between playing this RAW, its modernization in Hyperspace D6 or the Star Wars Hack of EZD6 because they all sound fun Hyperspace D6 with some karma, dice as resources and Star Wars EZD6 Dark Side might be what I feel the coolest about
I would give TNE another look one day. _Yes,_ there is a lot of detail, but that detail is there if you need it, there if you _want_ it. In truth, the entire game is pretty much explained in a small callout text block on Page 106 titled "How to Play Traveller." The task system (roll 1d20 under your attribute+skill) runs 95% of the game session for you. It's basically the NWP system from AD&D 2e turned into a universal game mechanic and it’s dead easy. In my experience, the other 5% of the game session is knowing how to resolve damage (basically the hit body part takes Xd6 damage, and you reduce the number of damage dice if there is body armour involved). I very rarely find myself delving into the details about how to handle sailing boat collisions or how exactly much fuel is destroyed when the air raft gets hit by a plasma gun… I mean, I am glad those details ARE there should I ever need them, but the vast majority of rules in the book go above and beyond what you see in a typical campaign, let alone a game session. In actual practice, Traveller The New Era games involve a lot of talking through problems, exploration, testing skills and the occasional spurts of violence.
West End Games really nailed Star Wars perfectly with the d6 system, regardless of the edition.
I don't know how needing 2 books, totaling (according to you) $50, is a downside when you immediately go on to saying how there are 3 books you need for standard D&D, which were $35 each totalling $105, barring entry to current era with a $78 bundle.
Fair
The publisher wrote two introductions to pardon himself from being associated with this genre, which he clearly dislikes. The satirical tone was apparently the only way he would allow this book to see print. It's a shame, because this opens up BESM in ways their other products don't, and it differentiates the game from a lot of other tabletop roleplaying games.
Rifts is probably not something you want to review then.
It sucks because RIFTS has some awesome ideas, but the focus of the channel was supposed to be a variety of games that could inspire players and GMs of all ages. RIFTS has a special place for me because it's the one game that allows you to play home-brew Gundam easily.
I played this game back in the 1990s and it was one of the best RPG experiences I ever had. It was brutal and with some deep rich environment and stories. The world itself is the best part and of course, you need the players and a good game master to make the world come alive. I've play quite a few different RPGs and Shatterzone is still the top of all of them. It is an adult theme RPG though, so I would keep the kiddies away from it. The card deck system was unique back then and it made for some very interesting twists and turns. You could get a really great roll from your dice, yet pull out a card that just screws that action up. The same thing could happen too, where your die roll is so bad, yet you could still be saved by pulling an awesome card from the deck. An example could be you shoot your gun on a bunch of thugs in the streets, completely miss them and you are basically screwed because they scored an almost fatal blow to you. BUT, you still have a chance. Pull out a Luck card and you are saved. The GM will come up with something to save your life or at least come out of it alive in one piece. That made for some really funny moments and heart breaking ones as well lol.
Yeah, I first picked it up and instantly knew my issues with card-deck enforced game design... the amazing moments are only achieved with the cards and unfortunately the associated costs and risks of including a card mechanic. The setting, art direction, and layout were really top-notch. I need to check drive-thru rpg and see if they have the cards...
It is slightly more complex Diablo II clone, got boring quite fast, IMHO :'(
From what I've seen of POE 2 it looks FAR more engaging, I'm really looking forward to that, but POE doesn't insult your intelligence with "Greater Rifts" or "Nightmare Dungeons" by leaning on numerical bumps. But GGG should definitely look into making optional content more accessible as some leagues were just more fun, like the cracking ground that spawned enemies with the eye ball belts... that was awesome!
Dale Evans, Roy Rogers wife
What's your favortie sci-fi RPG these days?
I'm looking into Ironsworn Starforged. I haven't really found any others that play fast, seem logical, and can function in various settings, also it plays really well.
P R O M O S M
It's good! I bought it yesterday with another book (Silver Marches), it is a very evocative book, I really like the scenarios it presents, they work for adventure seeds. The maps should be better modulated, maybe much easier to represent them with tiles than if you try to draw them on a battle mat. I found this Lords of Darkness book for $11.19 on a clearance shelf, but it's brand new, no one has wanted to buy it in 20 years, and it was there for me. I think it was a good purchase, it has a lot of content.
Yeah... 3.x was THE BEST! Find it, buy it. Hell just count + modifiers and - modifiers and whichever is greater add either advantage or disadvantage and you have 5E compatibility.
There isn't enough world building writing prompts in this book. Many of them are "Create a new world where something happens." There are tons of character choose your own adventure style writing prompts, such as "This happens, what happens next? How does your character learn from it?" Where I'm confused about this product is, am I supposed to create a character and fill out every entry as the same character? Or am I supposed to create a new character for each different writing prompt? I actually had the same response to these prompts as you. Right now, I'm using it to illustrate the adventures of a rival NPC party, but it's not very fun.
Yeah, there are a bunch of people that jumped on the video with negative reactions... because it isn't for world builders. It is a scattering of pc and dm questions, and most have you start off at the beginning with "create something that doesn't fit into your campaign!"
As I read this book I thought, "Has anyone in the entire world ever actually played characters at this level? Has this book ever been used?" I really do wonder. Even if you started in 2004 when you could get the first core books, did your party have the tenacity to keep playing to level 20? Or even level 12? A game based on 3rd edition D&D before the 3.5 revision, and this book is based on the same material that was outdated when it was published?
I just really dislike the absolutely needless redundancy, "just add the word EPIC before all of the core classes and abilities... yup that's REAL progress..." it just felt phoned in, like an intern wrote it.
@@cybrim1 I would certainly say that about the source material they were using in the MMO. But the writers of the whole EQrpg line did a fantastic job with what they had. They were really hamstrung, not being able to bring the MMO's rules into a D&D context as much as they needed to. Realistically, the whole update that needed to happen when the MMO raised the level cap, and then the rpg had a gap to fill, could have been a 4-page online freebie. They wrote story and descriptions and lore around a rules change that had no content at all, and that's impressive. Doesn't make it worth buying, though.
@@BillWiltfong they should've tied the progression to a quest-sourcebook hybrid; that would've been excellent.
YT algorithm 😐 Didn't see this til now
Thanks for watching, I've been down and out for a little over a month with my injury, its affecting most of my free-time so I can't upload as often as I would like. sorry about any quality issues, little time and a full schedule.
Holy shit thank you. I'm checking this out right now!
You should, it's really good
I dig this series!
Really? There aren't many views... so I gave up on it.
@@cybrim1 Yeah, I saw it at Barnes and Noble a couple of days ago but I wasn't sure if I should pick it up or not so I came across these and watched them and decided I'm going to buy it.
@@RamiroEscamilla well I'm glad that's what you got out of it; even though my impression was different at first. I still feel that character building and world building are two relatively different subjects with moderately light crossover. Thanks for the view. Check out Mythic Odysseys of Theros for Gods, and the Guild Master's Guide to Ravnica for factions.
I know it's just in context of the core book, but there are in fact playable elves. Hell Rob almost didn't include Clockwork at all, period. And that only got added due to almost every test group having a clockwork.
Do you know which source material the Elves appear in?
also thanks for the sub and the view
So. I just watched a video on a table of contents?
This is a free PDF on drivethru rpg. Once you understand the system you'll know there really isn't a connecting theme. You clearly have the internet go grab a free copy.
@@cybrim1 lol. What are you on anyway?
@@patrickfitzpatrick2945 my channel was still young; every other UA-camr at the time would spend at least 15 minutes to say the equivalent of this video. And much of what I cover isn't heavily reviewed. Not all of my reviews are like this; I didn't want to be another UA-camr that spent 20 minutes to give you content that could be summed up in less. My most recent reviews are FAR more in depth. When you download your free copy of FATE you'll see that the only depth is what you put into it.
Thank you!
Yeah! 15 Gods; an actual chimera kit; a piety system... so good!
hey man my latest core rule review is up... Shadow of the Demon Lord! I run through character creation and some basic system mechanics asking the way!
The only thing I Really recommend is maybe writing out a more organized or precise review before going into it. Just so its more educational and in-depth for the viewer. Other than that thank you!
I was arguing a lot with my now ex- girlfriend during the time of this review; and working a lot of overtime... and no one really responded if I should redo some older reviews... I literally have over 700 "books" some of them being smaller like the player companions for pathfinder.
@@cybrim1 completely understandable. We do what we can especially with the day to day stress. That Theros book is amazing and will work wonderfully with my ideas thank you for the recommendation. I just bought it
I just bought this to do a campaign about the World Serpent
Nice, how's it working out?
@@cybrim1 well i just ordered it so we'll see. I'm trying to do a huge campaign involving Jazirian and Ahriman (aka Asmodeus) recreating the World Serpent. Its going to require a lot of outerplane travel so I'm glad you recommended this book because it will help out a lot with ideas.
@@kevinlinsley9594 also check out review 52: When the sky falls. It deals with a dead god and the effects on your campaign world
And review 87 Mythic Odysseys of Theros as part of the theme for that is divine beings manifested in the same realm as their worshippers
@@cybrim1 thank you. I'll take listen today
This actually is NOT dated in terms of lore, as TNE (The New Era) is actually the most recent timeline in the original Traveller Universe. The next edition (4th Edition) went BACK in time to cover the past and the 5th Edition doesn't really have much lore at all, so TNE as a result is the most recent timeline for the official Traveller Universe. Also, there weren't character creation rules because this isn't the core book... it was just a supplement to cover the setting. The core book covers character creation and all the basic rules of the game. You're criticizing an orange because it isn't an apple! As for whether it is "worth the money," it is frequently considered one of the best Traveller books written after the classic 1980's Traveller books, so it is well liked by fans. Sorry you didn't appreciate it for what it is!
Thank you for the explanation, but when you are looking for a way into traveller a "gateway" implies "starter" to people in a store who are unfamiliar with a product yet who are interested in exploring science fiction role-playing. I simply wish for more clarification in product naming; buying a product with implications creates expectations. Also I find it interesting that the traveller RPG lines are so diverse. I take it you've been playing Traveller for awhile?
Is this the old rulebook or the reprint?
Oh it's the original, the reprint has all 3 books in it and a new cover... I don't have the player's guide... or the cards... which is why I can't give the game a true review
I'm running Darksun campaign, nice video thanks!
Man Dark Sun is the best!
Also thanks for the sub and the view!
Also i agree with what u r saying. I was kinda psyched for this book but looks like its lame
Thanks for the view and the support... no one watched the actual question videos and that's what bothered me most; yes it's a hot take, but the label doesn't match the content.
@@cybrim1 exactly . it's more like a character backstory builder. i wish wotc would release a comoendium of villians for 5e. that would help dms like myself the most imo. most campaigns revolve around the villian so why not give us more info about famous classic dnd villians (and possibly some new ones) like their motives, power level, ambitions, resourcefullness and personality etc
@@barbarianater the new Ravenloft book will have some info on the dark lords. Try to find a sword and sorcery studio book called "Blood Bayou" it has an evil carnival... might review it next...
@@cybrim1 thanks.
@@barbarianater also the Ravnica book that I reviewed a few books ago has some "villain templates" for each of the 10 guilds; and each of the guilds is a different kind of faction.
I actually enjoyed this lol. Would even like to see u reacting/reviewing 5e subclasses or races or other dnd related issues
I plan to, but I've got a HUGE catalogue of other games that I am trying to bring to the forefront as 5E and PF2 have so much influence; I feel that my content would get lost if I hyper focused on those. With that in mind, I do plan on covering more 5E and PF2 content. Life's been really busy with medical appointments though and needing to maintain my hours at work in order to keep my benefits... it is going far more slowly than I care for. Thanks for hanging in there though, I do appreciate the views and comments. Would you like to see Mythic Odysseys of Theros next?
Have you checked out Heart: The City Beneath? From the same creators, based upon an otherworldly setting beneath Spire but more bent on dark fantasy horror. Really amazing stuff. Took me a moment to get the system to click but once it did my group and I had a great time. I am thinking of when the Heart campaign ends (which is sorta unique I think to Heart-since it is built very much with a definite end in mind for your character)-I am going to tie them in to begin again as characters in Spire above.
I haven't heard of it, and in Spire's case I got a good deal on 3 adventures at Indy press revolution... really loving the "campaign framework" idea... I'm planning on merging it with aspects of beyond the wall; forbidden lands; and iron sworn... i haven't been doing as many reviews lately due to health, appointments, planning my own system, work, family issues... etc. I really appreciate the communication; keeps my spirit up!
Could this be considered a JRPG-? I have seen some advertised and I have to say my interest is a little piqued. I grew up playing Legend of Zelda and the first Final Fantasy and watching Voltron and Robotech. Ha ha. Something to capture those nostalgic feelings would be awesome.
A JRPG is a premade character and story relevant to them whereas a WRPG (western) is a story without the need to revolve around the character, at least in videogames. It's quite different in TTRPGs, a JRPG on tabletop is called a "table talk role playing game", 'Ryuu Tama' and 'Golden Sky Stories' are JRPGs that i have reviewed on this channel. BESM was developed in the West and only inspired by anime
Happy Birthday! Looks like at least one pen is mightier than a sword.
Ah man, it really brings back that sense of wonder. Final Fantasy VII really imparted the desire for modern and futuristic roleplaying games, because I could really start to grasp it. I grew up with a Sega Genesis so I missed out on Final Fantasy before VII. Shadow Run on the SNES was better than the Genesis version in my humble opinion, but it was Final Fantasy that introduced many modern concepts into roleplaying for me. Trains... my hometown used to be a train hub, my brother used to have an old trainset, one that smelled like oil; I remember playing with it as a kid; there is a river that runs down the middle of my hometown as well and when it is cold enough there is fog... which reminds me of steam... I loved Midgard and I am really glad it is more prominently featured in the Remake.
I got this book today. Filled with clever encounter ideas for simple adventure locations. The author has a new book listed for release in Sept 2021: "The Game Master's Book of Non-Player Characters: 500+ unique villains, heroes, helpers, sages, shopkeepers, bartenders and more for 5th edition RPG adventures." I expect this to be another great DM prep resource.
Hey thanks for the info, I'm not really one to typically buy an NPC book... due to system stuff, but pathfinder 1e has the NPC codex and I have that... I used them as fill in character stats... but 500+ instant characters isn't a bad idea.
The helmet ruins the audio
Yeah I'm trying to find a scorpion or subzero mask that's made of cloth... this thing gets hot... sorry, just bought a blue snowball Mic... can't wait to use it
Just to let you know, I have a 1080p camera now and a better Mic... trying out other setups!
@@cybrim1 Just don't wear a mask...
@@barrybadranath I have a new setup so I am not using the mask
what is wrong with you? wtf, this book is to give you ideas. If you don't have a imagination this book is not for you. BTW lose the helmet you voice is muffled horrible video!
Hey, thanks for the view I redid the video, the audio sounds MUCH better it's a playlist called World Builder's Journal. I'm giving the book a FAIR shake without my head caught in a hole. I'm reviewing 5 questions at a time.
Wow.......this guy is unlikable and seams to be hung up on the word world building ..it's a notebook with a fancy cover ....that's it! How do I block a UA-cam channel ?
Thanks... but it is a character journal they should've called it that.
Hey, you're right; I got caught up in something dumb, I am actively making videos that is giving a fair shake to the book. It's under World Builder's Journal playlist, the audio is MUCH BETTER, please give it a view, I'm going to be much more open to feedback. Thanks for this view it took me awhile to figure out the Mic setup that's what was tanking so long.
It's next to Vick's place, cyberpunk crashes again!!!
Content starts 20 seconds in, i had to respond to an important text
Sometimes a good rant can be cathartic. Hope that your health improves. “UA-cam content creator” is definitely like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. I am sure that if you look at successful YT creators then there is definitely a recipe. Sounds like you have been doing the right thing and mustering your reserves and taking stock of your situation. It’s best to be objective in that assessment and find out what really brings you joy. If it makes you happy then go with it and be unapologetic in your endeavors. Hoping you all the best of luck and success for the New Year and to seeing what your channel can bring.
Thanks for the support
Cool! I'd play it! Ever plan on running a game and record it for UA-cam? Would love to try this idea out while also using Stan Presents: Kaiju for the True20 system supplement.
If i were to run a game for UA-cam I'd want it to be in person... the internet doesn't substitute for a table... yet.
@@cybrim1 Okay. Well with Covid its kinda hard to do that, lol.
@@alexandersmith1777 Exactly, but I can't justify paying for another subscription yet. I'm on limited duty at work right now since December of 2019 so money's been tight for the entirety of 2020... here's to reopening the economy... as the old saying goes, "When you have time, you don't have the money; when you have the money, you don't have the time." But if you find any sort of low-cost or entry level variant, please leave some info about it, I would love to look into it.

Please do this again? Without the mask so we can understand you. I just got Keyforge last week and I'd like to hear your thoughts on the book, but 3 minutes in and I'm getting a headache trying to decipher what you're saying.
Yeah i need to find a new mask, I understand the frustration. I'm going to look into doing a voiceover... but, recently I've been working on my own system and it's honestly been far more exhausting than I thought. Thanks for the view, keep an eye on the responses, when/if i update any videos I'll post them in links in the comments.
KoE has always been an afterthought niche product. Which is a shame. I’ve played one since the line came out, Bone Flower specifically and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. KoE characters are the best of Vampire, Werewolf, Wraith and Demon...and in most cases more powerful than all of them.
For me personally I like the the differences in their struggle, the lore, and their systems. I never could get a group together to play KoE but my occasional WoD group would discuss it.
Lol ordered it yesterday

Hello! Please get a copy of the Traveller - The Next Era Core Book . This is just a sourcebook.
It's called the new era... and yes i have a copy! I wanted more input on core books. I'll have to find time, but you can see why i don't find this product to be worth the initial asking price? Also thanks for the view! I take it that you prefer sci-fi games?
Good video. Thanks for the recognition. Ha ha. It was a little muffled to hear you, but I can look past that. I ended up getting more of these Conan books and although I haven’t been able to really read too deeply...once again the art and the little bits I have read are great. I have been listening to classic Conan audio stories as well. The cover of the Barbarian sourcebook is amazing. I think the Barbarian book handles some of the re-imagining of Norse culture in the Conan world pretty well. Thanks for the video! What are some of the other content you are thinking of putting out?
I'm planning on getting better gear if i break 100 subscribers. Would you like a supplement, core book, or setting covered in my next review?
cybrim1 I wouldn’t mind seeing a review on another supplement of Conan, ha ha. Maybe something like Nameless Cults or Horrors of Hyboria? A nice review of similarities of Conan monsters to more popular RPGs and also what makes them different, unique to the setting, and why possibly this game could be a jolt to jaded GMs and players used to magic being everywhere and fireball being ready at the moment by PCs. I like the danger of the magic, it’s wild and forbidden and untrustworthy for good reason and I like how you mentioned the Cimmerian taboos-you can see why Conan mistrusted it and favored his wits and steel. This is definitely a departure from the high fantasy that dominants most game tables today, but I think so much is owed to the fiction of REH for influencing modern fantasy.
@@HandOvDoom2112 so you like danger... murderous magics... and short reviews that actually talk about content ... I'll be cooking something up; however, i do like to space out content... otherwise all the Conan content would be released and there are plenty more rpgs and supplements that are great for adventure design outside of Conan.
Sounds good. Create content and I will most likely watch it. I’ve got a pretty expansive RPG collection so I have a varied interest and taste in my games. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!
@@HandOvDoom2112 have you seen the original adventures reincarnated line?
I just ordered this myself. I got an odd craving for a low-fantasy high adventure iconic setting and had the core book for awhile now and have been watching videos of the supplements. Good video.

here's a fresh one just for you! ua-cam.com/video/46f8JJLPuNQ/v-deo.html
Hi. Why are there two variant covers in the Planar Adventures and Ultimate Wilderness books? Any difference?
Variant Covers are simply that: "a collector's cover" and by that they mean anyone willing to pay an extra price for the same materials, always go with the one you wouldn't feel worse about accidentally damaging, if you buy the collector's version you aren't as likely to use it, this has been tested in psychology. Both are fine products that are far easier to use than earlier editions of D&D... good thing that all of the pathfinder materials are made free via their website: www.aonprd.com/ decide for yourself and your group which is best; other than the cover art there is absolutely zero difference in the product. I sincerely thank you for checking out my channel.
@@cybrim1 I agree. I buy some books, the art of Wayne Reynolds is awesome.
Toss away material components. Use a pool of power to draw from and "magic" has a cost to be paid from that pool. No slots.
Well Cristiano Gris, I think that I may have a solution for you!
hey dude, I reed youre coment on Briana's video and thank you for youre suport , she appreciated it :)
Thanks for coming
Hmm. Interesting... OK. Quick advice. I came here thinking you were going to show (and review) it, pros-cons and the like but too much of the video is spent on you silently reacting to it and pointing but not showing it enough and not giving feedback properly IMO since youre not even talking at some parts. More than twice had to check my audio thinking it had an issue but you were just silently reacting to it. Whereas I can understand your reaction, I can't help but get distracted by the fact that you are not saying a thing and I can't read your expressions. The mask is cool, but it prevents you from properly delivering the message on this particular case. Maybe you could try recording some videos without the mask, or without filming you and focusing on the product you are reviewing entirely. Also IMO the camera is pointing too upwards and towards you, instead of the product we want to see. This happens on the other videos too. On the whole your review was ok and useful since I think I'm not buying it but I still feel like watching another review where I can properly and closely see the journal.
yeah, I've been getting a lot of overtime lately, and I thought the book was going to help me organize my thoughts... I was really disappointed in this purchase.
Hi I'm actively making a review with a better Mic and camera, still messing with the camera, I'm reading all of the questions and giving my opinion. The audio quality is MUCH higher, thank you for the view, please look into my World Builder's Journal playlist.
