Trinidad & Tobago CARNIVAL Parade - Caribbean Culture
(en Español abajo) Every year, Trinidad & Tobago host a Carnival experience that is like no other in this world. Comprised of unique cultural and historical elements, it is imbued with the energy of a proud people and defined by its unmistakable flavour and singular modes of expression.
Steeped in history, Trinidad & Tobago’s Carnival has roots that date back to the late 18th Century ---a time of African enslavement and European colonization in the Caribbean. As the French plantocracy celebrated their lavish carnival, their slaves were banned from participating. With the declaration of the end of slavery in the British Caribbean on August 1st, 1834, the former slaves took to the streets in a wanton celebration of rebellion and freedom. The years of denial of participation greatly influenced Carnival’s style and evolution, with many portrayals and cultural elements being based on traditions of yore. Over the years, Carnival became more sophisticated, legislated, and complex as the greatest cultural and tourism asset of an entire group of people.
Trinidad & Tobago, birthplace of steelpan, limbo, calypso, and soca music, boasts the Region’s largest Carnival celebration, Carnival or ‘Mas,’ as this festival is commonly referred to.
CARNIVAL MONDAY & TUESDAY
After all the lead up and hype Carnival takes place on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, starting with J'ouvert. Believed to have originated in Trinidad, J'ouvert celebrations start at around 4am on Carnival Monday. Participants, referred to as Jab Jabs, parade through the streets to the sounds of soca, calypso and steelpan music. People usually stay with the band they've joined for the occasion, smearing themselves in paint, mud and even oil. On Carival Tuesday, the Pretty Mas parade displays the elaborate costumes Carnival is famous for.
