2024 Harvest Haunt Express at the Colorado Railroad Museum 4K
The Harvest Haunt Express operated on Saturday and Sunday, October 19th and 20th, 2024, at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.
The video was made on Sunday, October 20th.
Rio Grande Southern, #20, pulled passenger trains all day.
Trains operated in the counter-clockwise direction which caused #20 to work harder because although the grade is shorter it is also steeper.
Enjoy!

"Gold Rush Days" was held on August 10-11, 2024 at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado. Rio Grande Southern #20 powered the trains. This video was made on Sunday, August 11th. The last scene shows Florence and Cripple Creek boxcar #588 on the right. RGS #20 originally served on that line. Train crew volunteer Miles suggested this scene to me. Thanks Miles!
Cass Ultimate Steam Experience 4K

In June 2024 my friend and I rode the Cass Scenic Railroad's trip to the top of Bald Knob mountain at 4843'. We have done this many times since our first trip there in 1972. Cass has Shay steam locomotives which are geared and allow them to pull heavy loads up very steep grades and over poor quality track. They were normally used on lumber railroads to haul trees to saw mills for processing as ...
Take a ride on the East Broad Top's M-1! 4K
Переглядів 10 тис.5 місяців тому
The M-1 is a gas-electric motorcar built by the East Broad Top Railroad in 1927. The railroad is narrow gauge with three feet between the rails. It is located in Orbisonia, Pennsylvania. My friend and I got a very special ride because the M-1 rarely operates. The video includes extensive views of the power plant and motorman driving the M-1 over the entire operable length of the line. Enjoy! 00...

Fantastic presentation and photos! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Cool video!
Thanks!
Nice video
Thanks
Extremely underrated engines.
I agree. They are awesome!
Yo soy Mighty,y yo soy Mac Y juntos somos Mighty Mac
This seems a bit slow for the Delhi wigwag. I wonder if Amtrak/BNSF had it operating on a higher voltage than it did initially on batteries and if it's now more healthy as a result.
Great to see the progress! Thanks for sharing the video
Hey John! I saw you walking around with your camera, but was too busy to say hello! Quick note: KMR 4 (Klondike Kate) is being restored to operation by the engine crew, and the D&S. Definitely a team effort on this one.
Dan, You're right! My mistake.
Al-a-mo-sa Al-a-mo-sa Al-a-mo-sa Al-a-mo-sa. If you know, you know😁
Love this engine.
Curious as to why the train slowed so much going past the shop.
They were describing to us all of the locomotives as we went by.
I love Cass and have been 4 times
Nice video. I have not been back since they reopened but was there in the 70s.
Absolutely stunning scenery!
I bet the driver at the end says, i can't hear you. Speak louder.
I absolutely loved my adventure riding the Cass Scenic Railroad pulled by the #2 steamlocomotive! You brought back my past remembrances of that beautiful day spent back on July 11, 2016 with friends one of whom is no longer with us. Thank You for sharing John!
Susan you are certainly welcome!
Great Video!
Thanks!
ディーゼル・エレクトリック、即ち電気式気動車ですね。しかも動力系統が車上設置なのでその分客室スペースが狭いという欠点が。
It is gas-electric.
🙋🇧🇷
Très beau train!❤
Have not been to the EBT since the late ‘60s and so happy to see it is back in operation. Great piece of history!
I was amazed that there was no bulkhead separating the engineer from the diesel engine. It would have made things a lot quieter.
Jednak warunki pracy dla motorniczego są spartańskie.
Należy wspólczuć motorniczym którzy musieli prowadzić te amerykańskie wynalazki.
Google translate gave me this translation from Polish, "You should feel sorry for the drivers who had to drive these American inventions." I disagree with this statement. American locomotive engineers and motormen are highly admired here.
Just a suggestion, please don't block closed captions. Not all of us are able to hear.
I'm sorry but the video doesn't have closed captions. I do not narrate my videos. I did put written comments in the video.
The railroads had hybrids long before the Biden administration. Here in Canada the CNRy pioneered the use of these self propelled units and used them all over the branch-lines in Southern Ontario. I recall one that was painted blah boxcar red and during the 1960s, after having been gutted, was stored in the roundhouse in Toronto filled with cables and blocks, ready to be dragged out to any wreck sight.
Can't watch this at the moment, but I will COME BACK TO IT!!!
As I suspected, I enjoyed the entire run! I am a bit concerned about the engineer's hearing. But the trip was great. Thanks for sharing!
A couple of years ago I was at the Nevada RR museum in Carson City. They have an operating McKeen motor car. I was very disappointed when i learned it had been repowered with a cobbled together diesel hydraulic system. Nice to see the M1 retain its original power plant.
I believe the McKeen cars were gas mechanical drive, somewhat dangerous and unreliable. A hydrostatic drive isn't period accurate but I can understand why they went with it.
Never been to EBT but will get there soon, I hope. The M-1 is one of the many things about this fascinating road that interests me, thanks so much for posting this video!!
Thank you! I agree that the EBT is an amazing place.
Great rehabilitation by all involved. The motor looked like it had been ex factor.
Amazing, absolutely amazing. If only cameras like these had been around in my youth (am 78 today). My old b&w shots of 1950s NP on the Skally will have to do. Thanks!
Thank you. I used my iPhone which I admit didn't exist the first time I visited the EBT in 1972!
I have not seen the interior of that car before. That is some electric motor in there! TM Member of Friends of the EBT Railroad, narrow gauge fan
I hadn't seen the interior either or had been able to ride in it. It was a great surprise and treat!
I believe that's a generator. An early forerunner of diesel electric drives. Many of the old doodlebugs had one powered truck with a single traction motor using either chains or gears to drive the other axle.
Aaaahhhh.... reminds me of the "good old days" when Phil Glass was the engineer.
Get her on some tangent track, slide that shifter over into 4th, and put it to the wood. Let's see that girl eat!
Those two whistles are the best together.
Excellent video. Especially interesting to see that this loco is coal burning! Hope it can be fueled this way in the future. By the way, I noticed a number of other locos in and around the roundhouse. Are these also coal burning and functional?
Thank you! We currently have two operating, coal fired locomotives, RGS 20 and D&RGW 491. A third one, D&RGW 346, is at the Durango and Silverton, getting boiler work done. It is our intent to stay coal burning as long as possible.
Where’s hyce
He was there that day. He's just not in this video.
cool
Thanks John for this
Thanks. I enjoy doing them.

Thanks for posting John!
You're welcome!
It’s so amazing how many photos he saved. My brother was in Nam. His memories are all in his head..
20 is a beast she is gnarly
The fact that starting a loco is the same as starting a coal forge is a total meme ps: rgs 20 is my favorite looking locomotive at the crrm
Why does she have a pirate flag?
20 was pulling the “Harvest Haunt Express” our Halloween train. I guess they thought that pirates are scary.
That is the Delhi wig wag
as someone who is a fan of thomas and lives in colorado this is a w
Nice!
