Staining Cedar Fence with READY SEAL Light Oak - Spray, Roll, Brush
Переглядів 150 тис.2 роки тому
I stained my new western red cedar fence with Ready Seal stain and sealer in the Natural / Light Oak color. I used a roller, pump sprayer, and brush to apply it. I was able to stain ~700sq feet (115'x6') with 5 gal by being very deliberate in my application. Check out my experience and lessons learned for how to best apply Ready Seal. The detachers are not in stock, it’s been out of stock for a while, wonder when the will be back.
Here's one that looks very similar to the one I have. I have not tried it, but same price point and good reviews. Might be worth a shot! amzn.to/4d62Ax8

Thanks so much!🙏
you remind me of another channel. Silver Cymbal i believe
Wow that's a huge compliment thank you, his channel is stellar 🙌
Thanks for this video. Looking at doing my lawn and was a bit hesitant. Your lawn turned out brilliant 👍
Glad to hear it was helpful, I appreciate the comment!! You got this 🤘
I'm turning into that guy... Please stop using glyphosate. It's poison.
Agree with you... I've used it about three times in my life, and this was one of them. I try to avoid where possible! Thanks

nice job!
Thank you! 🙌
looks awesiome

What is your square ft of your back yard? Also how many bails did u use of peat moss And which size package (cubic feet )of peat moss bail did u use?
It's right around 3000 sq feet. I used 5-6 bails of peat moss (3 cubic feet each). Hope that helps!
I love Ready Seal. I've used it several times now, its a very forgiving stain. If you use a wider spray tip in that garden sprayer it will go much faster and you won't need to roll it.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah that was definitely a lesson learned for me that first time around 👍
@@i_try_diy Lol...ya me to!😉
This was helpful. Adding pics from the manual were a useful bonus. Can you speak to the ease (or not) of cleaning it? Paint's probably easy enough, but not sure how something like a water-based poly would add to cleanup time. I own this but it's still in the box waiting its turn in the build process.
Thanks for the comment! I only have experience with paint, and my best advice would be to clean it as soon as you possibly can once you finish. The longer it sits and dries, becomes a lot harder to get clean!
How long after spraying can you lay the seed?
I'd wait at least 10 days. I think I waited 2 weeks.
I’m getting ready to start my first project using this sprayer. You made it look easy. Fingers crossed mine will turn out as nice as yours.
Good luck on your project! Would love to hear how it goes for you
Nice how much peat moss and top soil did u need?
Thanks! I spread two cubic yards of soil, and used about 5 bails of peat moss (3 cubic feet each)
This is a great video, kinda what I was looking for. I really like the color of stain on the cedar. It might have been mentioned, being the video is like 2 years old, but wouldn't an electric HVLP sprayer and back brushing or rolling be the way to go. I have 2 sprayers and they are only $30-40 each on Amazon.
Thanks for the comment! Yes you're 100% right, an inexpensive sprayer is the way to go. I just decided to use what I had lying around, but well worth the $40 investment to save the time and effort. Thanks!
Didn't see you add top layer of top soil
Added thin layer of soil before seeding, and a layer of peat moss after seeding👍
@@i_try_diy okay thanks for responding
@@i_try_diy Do you recommend any specific topsoil or you had some delivered locally.
Pretty much anything will do. If you just get the plain topsoil there's no real nutrients in it, but will still do the job. I ordered some good nutrient rich soil from a local nursery which worked well.
@@i_try_diy Thanks again, wonderful recommendations
What about applying a waterproofing finish?
This product is designed to be essentially waterproof and repel moisture. Not sure about applying an additional product over the top of it
Looks good! What made you pick tttf over ryegrass or bluegrass?
Thank you! The biggest reasons were that it germinates and establishes quickly, it's more drought-tolerant (I live in a desert), and typically more fungus resistant. I don't need the perfect or premium lawn, just something that's functional and low maintenance!
Awesome video !! Great results.
Thank you so much! 🙏
@@i_try_diy do you have a irrigation system or you hand watering ?
I have an irrigation system, but also hand watered areas that get more sunlight or dry out quicker etc. as needed
@@i_try_diy nice ! I was going to hold off on my backyard renovation until next year but I saw your video and couldn’t help but to get started this fall lol. I order my new seed today . My backyard about 2,500 sq feet. Hopefully I could get some similar results as you and I’ll be very happy lol.
That's awesome good luck! You've got this
Looks Great!
Thank you so much! 🙏
Wow, that looks great. I'm a beginner who's going to reseed my lawn. I thought I couldn't put seed in until the beginning of September. I'll start my project as soon as my seed arrives next week.
Good luck! Not sure where you are but just keep an eye on temps, as long as it's not too scorching hot you should be good to go.
@@i_try_diy I'm in the Virginia area and the temperature is between 90 and 95 and it will start to drop next week starting Thursday. And thank you very much for answering here, you've earned yourself a new subscriber.
I appreciate it! Best of luck to you, you got this!
Use a long reach roller frame Why do all that reaching and back bending down? 73 here little wisdom for you been painting my whole life
Thanks for sharing the wisdom!
Looks good! nice job
Thank you! I appreciate the comment 🙏
For raking the dead grass, did you just use a typical leaf rake or did you use something more specialized? Also, with the top soil and peat moss, did you get a special order from a local store or did you just buy bags of material at a box store?
I just used a regular rake for collecting the dead grass, it was pretty brutal but effective. You could also use a mower with a bag, as long as you don't care about your blade getting dull from all the dirt etc. For the soil, I just picked up a truck load from a local nursery and spread it out with a wheelbarrow and leveling tool. Depending on how much soil you need/want to add, you could just grab bags from the store and use those!
Awesome wow no aerating or should i thanks
Aerating definitely won't hurt! But scarifying accomplishes much the same thing, so certainly not necessary. Good luck!
thanks much appreciated
Great job man well done
Thank you I really appreciate the comment!
I'm getting ready to this. I hope I get the same results.
Good luck! It's a lot of work but so worth it in my opinion. Take your time and make sure you're diligent about watering!
@@i_try_diy 👍🤞🏼
How long after last dose of glyphosate did you seed?
It was about 12 days. I'd wait at least 8-10 before seeding!
Wish I could’ve done this but I live in Texas and it’s still 110 over here
Now's a good time to get started I don't think you're too late based on where you live! But if not there's always next year :)
Good Job, Lots of work there, but You need to disclose where you live, elevation and such because no two areas are the same. Doing this in Montana is gonna be different than South Texas
Thanks for the comment and the feedback, very true that it can differ greatly. I'm here in the Salt Lake City area.👍
You definitely did it right. 👌
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching 👍
This isnt a reno. This is a ctrl alt del ok the lawn. It looks great. Definitely takes Hours on Hours
For sure, no question it's a lot of work! Worth the payoff though in my opinion, couldn't be happier with our back lawn, and no more battling the old grass. Thanks for watching!
Nice transformation!
Thank you for the comment! Appreciate the kind words
@ i_try_diy Nice job. What seed rate did you go at per 1000 sq ft? I think I’m going to go around 7 pounds per 1000. I’m going to be doing the same here hopefully come September. What temps was it at when you put down seed?
Thank you for the comment! I did about 8 lb per 1000 and it came in very nice and thick. I seeded early September, so highs around 75-80 and lows around 50-60 probably? That's here in Utah. Where are you located?
I went through a similar process (minus the scarifying) on August 9th and laid seed down on August 10th. Used Ryan Knorr’s KBG blend and 8 days later started to see germination. Saturday will be 2 weeks. Excited as can be because I was expecting not to see germination until closer to September
That's awesome glad to hear it's working so far! What part of the country are you in?
@@i_try_diy SW MI area soil temps have been between 68-72 and Mother Nature has been generous to me in terms of light rain for the first week.
That's fantastic. Best of luck as you continue the process! Hope all the hard work pays off greatly for you
Well done. Beautiful job.
Thanks so much for the comment!
In my country all those 20$ accesories are like 100-150$ :(
Bummer! Good news is most of them are really "optional", it might just be more work without them
Super helpful.
Glad to hear it!
Lovely lawn
Appreciate it!
Great results, thanks for sharing. I love tall fescue though some consider it weedy. The view in the back though looks stunning. Utah mountains?
Thanks for the comment! We are loving the tall fescue, perfect for our backyard. And yes you nailed it! Utah mountains
My deck lightened and fades like crazy. I have stained it twice. Once 1 year after building and a follow up the next year. 2 coats each time. It always looks super faded and old the following season. I feel like it doesn’t absorb well or I need to stain every year. Looks amazing and right after and the easiest stain to apply.
That's interesting. What type of wood is your deck? Is it pressure treated?
No need to apply heavy coats on it to try and make it cover. You will have to do two coats to make it look uniform. Just like paint, thicker is not guaranteed to make it cover in one coat. It takes time and patience. I feel you did a nice job on the fence, but I saw some comments where some of the folks talked about putting on a thicker coat.
Yeah I definitely think two coats is the way to go. Thanks for the comment!
Looks great man! A little expensive but if it last awhile , beats Thompsons
Thanks for the comment! Yeah definitely not cheap, but seems you get what you pay for and hoping that continues to be true!
Do stain it for just adding color or to protect the wood?
Definitely both. Ready Seal is a stain & sealer, so in addition to looking nice it protects the fence from weathering, rotting, fading, UV rays and more. Without stain, cedar and other woods will look pretty ugly within a couple years
@@i_try_diy Thank you!
I bought mine and I am struggling with it. It keeps spraying dots and the look is nothing like yours….😢
Shoot I'm sorry to hear that! I'm no expert, but have you tried adjusting the flow control knob to see if that helps? You may also try thickening up the paint a bit if possible? Best of luck!
that happened to me to my second use. cleaned it throughly four times. sprayed it even w soap and water worked fine. used it another day wasn’t spraying at all. found his video and god bless !!!!!! my issue was the pressure/ flow knob on the handle ! works like it did my first time ! make sure you clean it very good too try twisting the black knob piece where the spring is out a little bit more. it loosens it. hope that helps you like it did me !!!
Thanks for the comment! Glad to hear that did the trick for you!
Thanks for sharing your video! What did you use to clean your sprayer when you finished?
Thanks for the comment! I just "cleaned" it out with water, and ran a bunch of water through it. It is now my dedicated stain sprayer because it's definitely not all the way clean! You could probably get it pretty clean using paint thinner or mineral spirits
Very nice video, thanks! I have a similar situation of mixed grass types, some thriving and some dying in the heat, but the worst part is how uneven the soil surface is. The grass looks "level" because of how the mower averages out the dips, but it's very unpleasant to walk on. Every step rotates your ankle in a new and unexpected direction. I hate the idea of glypho-ing the whole thing, but maybe that's my only choice. Seems like I have no way to level the soil while the grass is there. I'm also not keen on doing much work in 95 degree heat!
Yeah it's a difficult conundrum! When it's that uneven it's hard to just top dress and level without starting completely over
Thanks for watching!
about how long after the second round of herbicide and thatch did you lay grass seed?
I seeded about 12 days after the second round of herbicide. Anything after about 10 days you should be good to go
Thank you for your GREAT videos on the RS stain, (Especially using the Light Oak / Natural stain color, and your 'follow-up' video!). The videos were EXTREMELY helpful! :D We plan to do our ground level, in-ground pool deck area, (60 ft x 60 ft area, 1 year old pressure treated pine. The given area footage also includes the 16 x 32 ft pool, Hopefully NOT stained!!) We PLAN :D to accomplish it this month in that same color, and also a nearby new, cedar picket fence in perhaps a darker color RS stain as well. And we hope to also keep the stain out of the pool !! :D (We live in Northern PA area.) Any tips on what to look for, (or to avoid), in a sprayer, sprayer tip, roller, and brush? Thank you so much! LOVE your videos!
Thanks for the comment! So glad you found the videos helpful. A pump sprayer with a good nozzle or a roller are both a great easy option for applying. Good luck with the project sounds awesome!
