Its not illegal to own all the land they own, it was acquired unethically. The government compensated the British for the land, it wasn't free. The land was to be made available to the natives at a very low price and loans given for same. The Agricultural Development Bank was to do this, but the loans were given mostly to Kenyatta and his cronies, since most Kenyans were not informed well about the schemes. A good number of ordinary Kenyans benefitted, although most lost the land because they assumed kenyatta " gave" them land and ignoring loan repayments. The amounts were like less than 5k but some had ballooned out of control so the same families ended up buying the lands, also most parcels were far away from the recipients locales so they were not keen to maintain the payments. In short Kenyatta short changed the people he was supposed to lead.
