The K&P Trail is a 180-km multi-use recreational rail trail that connects downtown Kingston to the Town of Renfrew where it intersects with the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail. I have covered the section from Kingston to Clarendon Station and maintain that it is one of Ontario's most underrated rail trails. This section is beautiful with rock cuts, tree covers, marshland, farmers fields and lo...

Cycling Through Time: Amherst Island's Old-World Charm

Amherst Island, Ontario, Canada, is a great cycling destination. Quiet, peaceful and where history and tranquility blend seamlessly. This charming island, with a population of just 500 residents, offers a glimpse into a simpler time with its picturesque landscapes and rustic beauty. Amherst Island reminded me of the quaint and old world beauty of the Aran Islands in Ireland with its stone walls...

I have been cycling the county roads for five years and I enjoy the diversity of roads, scenic views, back country roads and trails. Kind of ironic that on Canada Day that a few friends from Pedalworks Cafe and Studios in Kingston chose to do a bike ride into New York State but we were glad we did. Cycling with Headphones! Is it safe? How I do it!
I've been in the Rouge Park quite a few times either cycling or hiking. Every time I go, there always seems to have a trail I haven't tread upon. I'm glad you got out to it, this time of the year the fall colours are spectacular.
Thank you. I look forward to my next trip
Great video! What size did you choose? I want to purchase a Kona Rove and I’m thinking of getting a 56cm because 58cm feels slightly too big. I’m 5’11” for reference … Thanks!
Thanks. I would go with 56 . I got 58 and I am 6'3"
your introduction is simply top class.
Gracias. Saludos desde Colombia
Finishing at the 'Stone is a great plan!
Look forward to next time. 😉
Steve, Have you biked the rail trail between Lindsey and Haliburton. I am thinking of doing an overnighter later in October
No I haven't but I am always interested in something new. Let me know how it goes and enjoy!
Live music at the rest stop. Pretty cool.
How is the trail surface? Looks more rugged, not fine packed like some of the other rail trails.
It definitely varies on this section but is well worth it. Everything from fine packed gravel to grass, small rocks and roots and a couple of sections prone to getting muddy. I have done this trail on everything from a hybrid to road and gravel bike.
Night ride sounds fun until you get spooked and almost crash by making eye contact with random raccoon sitting on top of the trash can that you didn’t expect or notice until last minute
Ha ha. You never know. I have had two coyotes run in front of me
We did that ride last year on our tandem. Nice ride! A nice region for cycling and a very pretty part of the country.
It sure is! The Gravel Ride in June is great too! We saw one tandem there
I often ride this path. Very nice trail. The Rideau River trail is also a really nice run, but not very long.
Very nice indeed. It is really great to have such an extensive trail network in an urban area
A lot of bridges on that trail. Makes the ride all the more nicer.
It sure did. Can't wait to do it again
Steve, My wife and I completed this ride yesterday and it was tremendous. The views along the water are awesome. Thanks for posting this and giving us the idea of this route.
You are so welcome. I can't wait to do this again!
Steve, I like your trademark mount. I will use your technique and hope to explore some of your gave routes! Gary.😊
Ha ha thanks. Enjoy exploring!
We live in Almonte and ride this trail a lot. It’s a nice place to ride.
Sure is, I will be back. Will do from Smiths Falls to Almonte next time perhaps
Sorry hit thumb down by mistake
Ha ha no problem. Thx for letting me know ☺️
Steve, thanks so much for the informative video! I am taking a group of 8 friends to PEC this coming weekend and I have a few routes planned in RidewithGPS but I was wondering if you are aware of any active roadwork being done on any of the main paved roads? Also, is the main drag through Picton rideable or should I plan to be on the residential roads around it. Thank you so much.
That sounds awesome. I don't live in PEC so I can't say for sure but I would check the county website. www.thecounty.ca/residents/services/construction-closures-service-disruptions/
@@Pedals_and_Pathways Thanks so much!
That was amazing man. You pushed yourself and probably felt the benefits well after . Excellent footage and commentary. Beautiful area.
Thanks so much for the kind comments Derek. Appreciate that. I love cycling the county!
Omg i interest this combo. Thankyous :)
Looking forward to seeing some lakes. Dip your feet in.😊
Thank you for the review! It's nice to see that the DJI can pair seamlessly with the Hollyland mic.
I've done this trail so many times. Be there tomorrow. Love the video.
Awesome! Thank you!
Looks like the ride was gorgeous and you had fun! 😊 really enjoyed riding along and seeing the beautiful landscape!
Thank you. That section from Sharbot Lake to Clarendon Station is very memorable 😀
This ride is on my bucket list.
Let's do it!
Didn’t realize it signed in under Nate and I made a comment but he’d likely have the same experience riding your bike 😂
Hahaha I remember trying out your bike one time………
You sure do love a nice new cafe to stop at! Love the videos
Yes I do! Ha ha thanks for watching
I rode the Cataraqui Tuesday, after watching your pedal vid there, absolutely amazing. For reference, I live along the Waterfront trail and know it and it's environs well.
Glad you enjoyed it. 👏
Looks like you just crossed the middle of the island? Have done any cycling on other parts of the island? What’s it like?
You have to as the road doesnt go any further so we headed back north then west to make a bit of a loop. It is really quiet and scenic with several km along the water
We’ve done that trail too on our tandem. We’ve been to many of the same places for mini cycling vacations that you are showing on your channel.
That's great. I just love sharing great places to ride.
We have done that trail many, many times on our tandem.
I wonder how old that rock cut section is.
According to a couple of sources the Canadian Shield formations in this area formed 2.5 to 4 billion years ago. My newest video on the Cataraqui Trail shows a better representation
The radar is awesome….so much safer to ride w it
Did you have to pay to use Wellington Beach? Last summer I cycled there and they were charging even cyclists.
No, not even charging cars. Nice surprise
I know where I'm cycling through this weekend then!
I’m concerned about the video resolution quality. This video was painful to watch.
Chest hrm better for tracking intervals
Awesome ride, we recently mapped out this ride for our next trip up to the County. Curious as to where you parked? Did you park at the brewery? And do they let the general public park there or do you recommend somewhere else to park?
Hey Owen. We parked at the brewery which is about 7km each way to the ferry. You can park there, they don't monitor it but unless you plan to visit there you could just park in Bath, Finkle Shores Park is nice. I really enjoyed this ride.
best place to find owls in the winter!
Moving back after 50 years....I'm disgusted to see how the unneeded and ugly wind turbines have ruined the look of the rustic landscape.
You aren't alone!!!
Hi! Can you share the strava link for the route or on other site? Thanks
Sure thing: just added at the bottom of the video description 😊
Thanks for the tour Steve. I've sailed around Amherst Island but never set foot on it.
Your welcome. Can't wait to go back and maybe stop for a coffee and ice cream 😊
Thank you Steve. Great suggestion for a ride.
Kingston is a great place to live (if you can find a vacancy).
I hear you! Things are tough these days!
This was really helpful. While bike touring the Olympic Peninsula I plan to head up to BC to see my sister in Sooke. I was curious if the Galloping Goose trail was bikeable since I plan to ride from the ferry terminal to Sooke. Your video answered that question and has me excited for that part of the trip! Thanks!
Glad it helped. Enjoy. Beautiful part of the world and I can't wait to return
Are you using the Garmin Explore 2?
Yes. For a could of years now. I have a video about the Garmin products I use as well. Love Garmin stuff
Thanks for the great video. I u derstand that this connects to the Ottawa Valley Trail and the K & P Trail for atotal of 580km. Are there any GPX FILES that tie these together?
Not sure about that. You can check out the new MORE cycling route which takes in part of the OVRT and the Cat Trail and K&P are well marked and the intersections have signage and easy to plot on a cycling app. That would be quite the adventure
I took that bike trail a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, as you can see @0:30, they put the trail on the wrong side of the highway for cyclists. As you go a little further you see why. Highway 2 blocks the view of much of the Thousand Islands because the bike trail is sunk a few feet lower than the highway, so your view is mostly blocked as you cycle along. What could they have been thinking?
I was speaking to someone who said it is there because of Bell phone lines? It is unfortunate but nevertheless a nice experience if you are willing to get across the road to see Rockport or Browns Bay
Thanks for your lovely video. I'm planning Galt to Paris then to Brantford and on to Burlington this weekend. I just got back from a 5 day all over Montreal tour and area and it was fantastic. Probably covered about 600 km in the 5 days. Montreal has many dedicated bike trails throughout the city. And lots of bridges to cross. Really worth going!
Thanks for your comments 🙏. Quebec is great for cycling as well. I was thinking about Montreal and Ottawa is on the radar as I have family there.
Mountain lake looks nice.
I lived in Kingston for 14 years and loved everything from Prince Edward County to Brockville and up to Frontenac Park. That was very nostalgic for me, Thankyou!
My pleasure. It is a beautiful area and I like sharing the love
