Such important thinking! Thank you, and thanks to Moriah for making community engagement and disaster preparedness responsive and empowering.
Moriah is truly amazing. She is clearly a passionate, servant leader. Love how she centers community knowledge and experiences. Great!
We couldn't agree more! Moriah is fantastic.
Moriah is a great connector and key to accessing to resources. Great gems shared in this interview.
It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Moriah, what a wealth of information and enthusiasm. Definitely a model to follow.
Awesome! I'm going to look into getting a few for my go bags. Thank you!
You won’t regret it!
I personally worked at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans in Surgical Services. I was a member of the hurricane team. Being a member of the hurricane team means that when a hurricane threatens the immediate area you have to stay in house at the hospital so you can respond to emergency surgeries that may arise during the storm. Dealing with a hurricane the size and strength of Katrina would have made Memorial Medical Center be designated a SHELTER OF LAST RESORT. That means employees and their families plus people in the area who have no means to evacuate can come and seek shelter at the hospital. Now the mindset of the people of New Orleans and of the people in charge at Memorial Medical Center was that the building was very old and solid and has survived countless storms and given that a hurricane the size of Katrina had never hit New Orleans in a direct hit on the city itself. I talked to my co-workers there and when I expressed concerns about a hurricane hitting the city they would say that the weatherman says that every year and you have been here 20+ years and how many have hit the city? I would say none. They turn or change direction at the last moment and spare the city each time. So I shouldn't worry about it. We had floods at Memorial but it's was like doing a disaster drill at the hospital when the drill is over you can reach over and flip the light switch on and you have lights plus the air conditioner stays on. You practice but don't feel the direct effects of any disaster. We practiced for hurricanes every year there at Memorial. When it flooded we waited for the city's water pumps to kick in and drain all of the flood water out so you were only inconvenienced for a few hours or a day then everything would get back to as normal as could be. Everyone was used to that and based their preparations on that. With Katrina when it obtained category 5 status STRONG category 5.......all of the engineers that operated the pumping stations were evacuated so there was no pumping that was going to happen after the storm. I don't think that point was emphasized to the management team at Memorial. So when the flood came it came out of the sewers and manhole covers in the streets. Water kept rising until it was several feet deep. The power system and back up generators at Memorial Medical Center were designated as THE ALAMO. If ever the water invaded and ever took the ALAMO then we would lose VIABILITY and cease to be able to protect or provide any care whatsoever. We would become an old building full of water. But that had never happened before or really threatened to happen before..so Memorial always lived up to it's reputation for being the shelter of LAST RESORT. I used to have to go across the pedestrian bridge at Memorial Medical and go to the old main building of the hospital and go up to the 7th floor and transport patients from a place called LIFE CARE that was there. The patients there were always in very poor physical shape and elderly and couldn't care for themselves. LIFE CARE was it's own separate entity and was not part of Memorial Medical Center or Tenet Healthcare. They were run by a totally separate company. I always worried about what would happen to the patients and nursing staff there if there ever was a disaster from a hurricane strike the city. Would they be left behind or on their own? Would they be treated like the 3rd class passengers on the movie Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and be locked below decks and and have to fend for themselves and find their own way? I didn't know but I wondered about that when hurricanes made it into the Gulf of Mexico. Anyway sorry for the novel but I just wanted to share my personal experience about the subject matter of this video. Thanks for hearing me out.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. If you are willing to chat more about it. Please email us at disasterclass@instinctready.com.
Great review I just picked one up
Awesome! Let us know what you think of it!
If residents had evacuated all resources could have focused on the ill.
I think this episode and the discussions about go-bags and you are your own first responder needs to be incorporated into any and all civilian coursed on preparedness. The videos and pictures from someone that was there and can share what it was really like are helpful, so many people think they can get in their car and drive away or have that paved road or path to evacuate on. Look forward to hearing more from Rob.
It’s a great lesson and we hope more people get access to this kind of information!
I read this book when it came out. Then, anything else I came across related. So imagine my shock to discover just weeks ago, in the fall of 2024, that roughly 500 prisoners were left to drown in the county jail during Katrina! Details are sketchy, as there was a settlement agreement in which this couldn't be discussed. But there are PLENTY of accounts to support that this happened, without doubt. The scale of which and the details are rather consistent and convincing. Even the evidence left behind on location, which was abandoned afterwards, calibrates the stories told. Yet, I have never heard of this in the last 20yrs? Messed up, cover up. Whats changed?
What does FEMA do? For starters they have been intentionally interfering with the locals in the recovery process ! First responders my ass !hey Jason just suck his dick ! You’re already kissing his ass!

GREAT Training, and networking and its all FREE - WELL WORTH IT
I cringed when Dwight threw the cigarette into the trash. That trash can looks like it was made of a thin sheet of metal, which the fire would have melted through eventually. And even if it didn't, the way he just casually tossed the ciggy into the trash like that could have set off embers to ignite on the floor or wall. It wasn't a very controlled fire. Also he gave terrible instructions when he told Michael to touch the handle. You DON'T touch the handle if you think there is a fire on the other side because metal can get really hot, really fast. Best case scenario, you could end up burning your hand like Oscar did. But worse case scenario, the skin on your palm would have melted off. If its a wooden door, the best thing you can do is to feel the area around the doorknob, or to tap it gently with a finger. But do not fold your hands over the knob or handle or else you will be in for a very bad time. Also, I think Michael had the right idea to crack open a window and call for help. However, he should have shut the door behind him, because the fresh air would have caused the smoke to surge towards his direction and he could have suffocated.
These are sadly gone... :( I was just about to buy another one. lol.
Look what happened in Covid. Very questionable decisions and outcomes every which way you look at it.
I guess they asked for money but the corps and government was not giving any money. All services have been cut and less money over the years. Look at the state we are in now. People waiting 2 years for an operation.
Two hospitals in the same building with different staff and no one at the corporations answering the phone. That guy on holiday man. Made me angry. The excess heat.
That manual was provided by the persons who own the hospital. The incident person would have only followed what was inside. That woman didn’t write it. You can’t have the generator up high because they are noisy as hell and dirty. The staff didn’t sleep for 5 days 24 hours. The sewage was all over the place. People going to toilet on themselves. Electric gone. Food and water running out. Medications running out. That guy who didn’t respond to the emails and just wasn’t doing a good job. He should have just sent the choppers and made a decision. He would have been a hero sending them early. What was the weather reporting like then compared to now. Did we have satellite weather ?
I honestly believe that hospital was blessed because the pope came there.
You said too much without even saying much. This was before social media. Also the next big crisis after the world trade centres. Didn’t the government learn from 911. It was a hand of god moment. 911 wasn’t. How many people died in the whole town. I’m honestly surprised that there were only 45 deaths in that hospital. They were actually ventilating by hand. Could you do that for 24 hours. Non stop to keep someone breathing.
You can’t look at it like a house. Your house doesn’t have 2000 people in it with some only living on electrical equipment.
I’d be interested to know if people’s houses had flood insurance in their policy.
Why do you honestly think flooding was left out of the manual and why the levees weren’t supported even more than they were or made higher knowing the storms are getting worse.
Bush just flew over and looked out the window of the plane. ✈️. How awful. Lack of money spent on the hospital. I mean what if that helipad and stair well collapsed. It would have been worse.
I blame the owners of the hospital, the government, president, all the emergency people. How could you just leave people to fend for themselves with no help. They asked for help many times and were just left. Absolutely terrible.

Dwight does too much sometimes. But it's clear that none of them listen to safety tips.
Just bought the Big Surprise! Hopefully it is awesome!

@@disasterclasspodcast LOVED IT!
show us the part where you go down from the top floor and you need to open the bottom ladder half way.......right!
Love the "raw" episode. Everyone needs a mystery box, get yours today! Looking forward to what the rest of 2024 brings for Instinct Ready and Disaster Class.
I went out and bought LifeVacs for my family as soon as I watched this!
Series was great. And thanks for preaching HAVE A PLAN TOGETHER! I don’t live in a hurricane prone area, but we do have severe storms and tornadoes. One about hit my house in 2022, and warning time is better than before, but in the moment we do freeze. we always had a plan together should the worst happen, and now that im older and my neighbors are from Cuba and didn’t understand what to do, we have a plan for me and for them to use my basement
Thank you so much for the feedback! And kudos for looking out for your neighbor too!
صحفة صحلب مشخشخة
The funniest part is that they have like 3-4 fire extinguishers and no one went for one. Also no one pulled an alarm or used their cell phones
Great giveaway!!! 👍# 1 Stay well, Joe Z
Yes - we live 3 miles from Sandy Hook Elementary. Since that day in 2012 there has been a police officer with a marked police car assigned to the entrance at each school in our town. Worth every penny
Congrats on the sponsor! Safer Escape is a great product that every family in a multi level home needs.
3:13 - 7:20 You're welcome
This entire opening scene shows how ill prepared The Office is ready for a fire.
That loud music at the start is so annoying. It made me want to stop the video Way too loud
LITERALLY the only and funniest thing I've seen from this show💀💀 I saw randomly started with this episode and i was IN TEARS and after that I never got into it 🤷🏾♀️
You are very special and unique. Soon you will receive a medal for being such an interesting person. Congrats.
I hope you will do The Office clips you mentioned
Absolutely we will! Is there a particular one you want to see first?
In terms of safety issues I think the most important except the fire one you've already made would be those you have mentioned at the end of your previous Office episode which were Michael as a survivor and RCP with staying alive :)
And then Stanley had a heart attack lmao
Glad to have Disaster Class and the two of you back "on the air"! Great things to come, can't wait for everything to come through.
We are happy to be back! Thanks for the support!
Wesley is probably a Darryl because he's witty and relaxed, and Jason a David Wallace kind of guy. 😄
😂 We can rock with that!
