This is an advance piece I did for a Roxie Cinema Pre-Code Festival in the Spring of 1996. ABC-7 in SF gave me a lot of latitude to talk about this kind of thing in the mid-1990s it was still a new subject. Frances McDormand won the Person Tribute to Visionary Talent Award at the Venice Film festival. This is how it looked from the audience.
Without question the finest actress of 1930s films. Rivaled only by Ann Harding and Ruth Chatterton.
I like kay Francis also
Norma Shearer, Jean Arthur, Joan Crawford are to me the best women stars of the thirties and forties. Unfortunately they have been forgotten by others extremely overrated.
Mr. LaSalle, I'd love to know what you're working on. Are you pulling together clips for a class or a lecture or for a presentation or a show? Is there any chance the public could see whatever it is when you're done? I've enjoyed your books so much, and your documentary for Complicated Women is not only a favorite of mine, but something I go back and rewatch again and again. I always find something new in it that inspires me to dig deeper and learn more. Thank you!
I'm doing a lecture today and then in another couple of weeks at a retirement community about Norma Shearer. And then in the following months, I'm planning to do ones on Garbo and basically working my way through pre-Code. Thanks for the kind words about COMPLICATED WOMEN. Have you ever seen the documentary? Because of some legal issues regarding the clips, it can't ever come to DVD, but someone uploaded it on UA-cam.
@@micklasalle2972 I love the documentary! I saw it on TCM years ago and when I found it here, I was tickled! It's so good, and much like Stanwyck in Babyface, I share it with friends to draw them into precodes. Your presentations on Shearer and Garbo sound wonderful. Is there any chance they'll be recorded and posted somewhere?
